I started to write this on another thread, which then went poof. So I expect this post will disappear at some point.

Forgive me, as this thought hasn't fully formed yet (and I lost a child to suicide earlier this year, so my brain is scrambled generally). But I hate the way that everything seems to have become a pile-on these days, thanks to nasty newspapers, social media, media in general, and keyboard warriors spouting vitriol from the safety of their sofas. It's like anybody who has a job which involves being in the public eye, or anyone who happens to make the news, becomes fair game for public scrutiny, and often in a way that intrudes on their past, their previous employment, their private lives, their families... sometimes in a way that goes far beyond what is pertinent to their job or role. And in these days of 24/7 media, they often can't get away from it once they get home. I'm not comparing Jason Arday to politicians, and do understand the questions surrounding his credentials, BUT this phenomenon has brought to mind the constant hounding and pressure on various MPs, and in particular our last PM, to resign. When a character flaw or any sort of wrongdoing appears, the public and particularly the media seem to become judge and executioner. Did nobody learn from Caroline Flack? From the Post Office scandal?

I'm tired, as well as not firing on all cylinders. I hope that somebody more eloquent than me might be able to rephrase or simply understand my train of thought here.

Sorry for your loss. But this is exactly it. It appears he was a fantasist - but did he deserve to be hounded until he may have killed himself? Whose interest did that serve Daily Mail? They were just super keen to take down the ‘youngest black Cambridge professor’ without a care for anything else

Queenncat · 14/08/2026 23:11

He was understandably confident he could shut down any doubters with cries of racism. That worked for a time.

Irrelevant if he was mentally ill no?

User7989776 · 14/08/2026 23:13

For the record, none of the deleted threads contained anything that was deeply offensive or extreme. They had individual deleted posts which I presume were highly inappropriate comments.

Yet MN has been frantically deleting all threads started on Arday's death. One may almost suspect that someone from the university involved is heavily invested in stopping all public discourse of this topic.

lovingthebeachlife · 14/08/2026 23:14

@ScruffMuffin I agree with you & subsequent posters. What he did was wrong obviously but it’s the hounding by the media & social media that must be unbearable.

I’m sorry for your loss. Most of the things being said about Jason are actually just suppositions, allegations and inferences at this stage. Some claims have more corroborating evidence than others and hopefully the facts will be established in due course. In the meantime people should stop behaving as if they know everything about him with certainty. Just because it’s in the papers doesn’t mean it’s necessarily true!

Exactly! I've been trying to reply to at least 3 threads and they got deleted while I was typing the comment. And I can categorically confirm there was nothing in the most recent posts from those threads that would normally warrant deletion.

How sad.

Scrutinised and bullied till the end.

How sad for his family

Why do you think he shouldn't have been scrutinised? Is tracking down the truth about a con man bullying?

Absolutely heartbreaking for him and his family and friends.

He was indeed hounded to death in my optioning by the media.

We need a Levison 2.

Shame they didn’t put the same effort in before he died

ScruffMuffin · 14/08/2026 23:17

Thank you, @Starrylawn - you understood the point I was trying to make. I work with children at all points on the autistic spectrum, but tending towards the more severely impacted end. Through my work, I agree he was probably a fantasist whose claims don't ring true, but he was also vulnerable and should have been looked after, including perhaps not fast-tracked into a position for which he was ill-prepared, and being mentored properly. I don't believe he deserved to die as a result of the allegations, true or not. If he took his own life, that is.

FivePots · 14/08/2026 23:18

His claims of being autistic were likely also pack of lies.

Being headline news of the biggest paper in the UK for a week is probably bullying. He hadn’t killed anyone. Or hurt anyone.

Or perhaps he was a vulnerable man that was headline news for the last 1-2 weeks. He never caused anyone else harm. He was hounded. He had resigned. His academic life was over.

All the deleted threads on Arday were 80% condolence & support messages which would probably be of great comfort to his family. Any critique came in the form of the system that enabled him to fall from grace. It's obvious that some entity is not happy with the way the narrative has gone and is now trying to shut down discussion about the topic.

Hope enough people read this before this thread gets zapped as well!

Honestly, I don't know enough about him to be able to comment either way.

At my work, we really do see it all - each autistic child is completely individual. By definition though, they have some traits in common with each other. Jason's time lines and some of his claims don't ring true to me, and set off mini alarm bells when I read about them - particularly when I saw that his peers have refuted some of them. I would like to know how he ended up in a position such as professor at Cambridge, where he was clearly out of his depth.

Deception? Probably. Exaggeration? Definitely. Outright lies? Maybe. Did he deserve to die? No.

Moochieme · 14/08/2026 23:28

For me, this is the story that will stop me reading the DM. The relentless bullying, a story no one really was that interested in. The Mail really has blood on its hands.

I only saw a few deleted comments in those threads which I presume were the ones against talk guidelines. That's usually what happens with controversial threads so I'm not sure why they didn't just keep that instead of deleting the entire thread. I know for sure there was no bunfight or any sort of wild drama happening on any of those threads at the point of deletion.
