Help me with some good replies for rude men

Twice recently I've had negative comments from men when in gym gear.

For context I have lost nearly 9 stone and have joined two gyms and am enjoying weights, yoga, pilates and circuit classes. I'm still overweight and am still losing weight slowly. I'm a size 16 (down from a size 28 two years ago)

The first comment was in a shop when I called in to pick up a parcel on my way to a class. A man said "think you need to spend a bit more time in the gym love" and laughed at me. I couldn't come up with a clever comment but told him to fuck off.

The latest one was outside my house when I was heading out for a weights class and the guy laughed and said "don't think the gym is working for you sweetheart". The only thing I could come up with was to say "I'm getting more exercise than your brain is".

I'm not really bothered by the comments - they say a lot more about the men making them than they do me - but I would like a few more putdowns for these stupid men because I think they should be shamed for their comments and I think they're banking on me / women being too embarrassed to reply.

So, any good comebacks please?

I would probably pretend to receive a call from my mobile, pick it up, listen to the caller and tell him “It’s the village calling - they’re looking for their idiot”.

Gingercatlover · 13/08/2026 18:05

I would say ooh did you really say that out loud, but at least I can get fit nothing you can do about your face!

"Save your breath - you'll need it to inflate your girlfriend later"

Love this

SafeAndStranded · 13/08/2026 18:17

Pretend like you didnt quite catch what they said and then reply "sorry I don't have any spare change"

“Go fuck yourself as nobody else will” worked for me

Love this

squirrelchops2 · 13/08/2026 18:30

Pardon......?

Pistachiocake · 13/08/2026 18:31

What happened to hurt you, to want to get your kicks from trying to hurt a stranger?

JuliettaCaeser · 13/08/2026 18:32

Sadly dd is only 17 and has come
up with response herself. She is nearly 6 foot stunning blonde so gets
a lot of unwanted male attention. She finds if you go straight to abuse they get nasty too and it escalates which makes it more unpleasant for you.

OohOohOohWahAhh · 13/08/2026 18:34

I like “who put 50p in the dickhead?”
Well done on the weight loss OP, I’m sorry you’re having to deal with such shitty people Flowers

This really works. I was at the gym and about to put my mat down when a man threw his mat and it landed at my feet. My back was to a wall and people were either side of me. I politely explained that I was about to put my mat there. He replied but I didn't catch him so I asked him to repeat himself.
he said that he'd asked me "Do you own the floor?".
I just walked off to get the rest of my kit. When I got back he'd moved and he never came back to the class.
Getting him to repeat himself and then walking off made him look like the wanker he was.

You could've said ' No , I don't own it but I pay to use it '.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/08/2026 18:43

Would all these sound as funny when recounted after receiving two black eyes and a broken nose from a punch in the face?

These aren't little children who would run away to complain that the mean lady said something hurty, they're fully grown men who already despise women.

JuliettaCaeser · 13/08/2026 19:01

Exactly. No normal person abuses strangers so you know you are dealing with someone who is either mental or malicious or both. Best not to antagonise them but without simpering or engaging with them either.

5128gap · 13/08/2026 19:02

Act puzzled or ask them to explain, and believe it, they'll be delighted to.
Insult them back and they'll get worse.
They are basically children, acting up for attention, so any response is a win.
The only thing to do is give them absolutely nothing. Not even a glance.

SusanJJ · 13/08/2026 19:28

A muttered'idiot' might do the trick.

GrillaMilla · 13/08/2026 19:39

I'd pretend I hadn't heard and completely ignore, they're not worth wasting breath on and also I would be wary of retaliation.

Fast800goingforit · 13/08/2026 19:48

"Opinions are like arseholes..."

"I can lose weight, but I don't think personality transplants are available yet"

"Did someone say something?"

"You think I give a shit what you have to say?"

"What was that?" then wait, "Yeah, nothing of any importance" and if the wazzock repeats it, say "thought so - nothing interesting".

I prefer responses that don't lower you to their level

permanently · 13/08/2026 19:50

I quite like ‘take a king-sized fuck to yourself, dicksplash.’

maryberryslayers · 13/08/2026 21:13

The best thing you can do in my opinion is look confused and ask them to repeat themselves.
'Sorry, were you talking to me? I didn't catch that, can you say it again?' Stupid comments tend to be a lot less 'funny' the second time around. If they do repeat it, just smile pitifully and say 'oh dear' like you would to a toddler shake your head and walk away.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 13/08/2026 22:18

I can diet, you can't grow brain cells

Lleys · 13/08/2026 22:37

Well done on your weight loss and exercise journey 👏🏼 💪🏻

Sorry to disagree with others on here and comeback lines. I don’t think men like this would give a shit to be honest. You could give the wittiest response and they probably wouldn’t ’get’ it.

I’d either ignore or directly ask them to repeat and explain their words x

ChaliceinWonderland · 13/08/2026 22:42

Sorry I didn't catch that, can you repeat it ?

Always works.

Humiliating the rude person, and in turn, making them look like a prick.

Illegally18 · 13/08/2026 23:02

TamarindCottage · 13/08/2026 14:55

“Go fuck yourself as nobody else will” worked for me

That's fantastic. love it.

15minutesaday · 13/08/2026 23:15

"think you need to spend a bit more time in the gym love"
"think you need to practice what you preach mate"

"don't think the gym is working for you sweetheart"
"how would you know? doesn't look like you've been near one in years"

Throw their insult back at them and do it after a short pause while looking them up and down disdainfully.

I might go for a sarcastic "back handed compliments are so 1990s" or "when I want your opinion, I'll ask, thanks"

JesseDavisGonnaHangOnInThereNSoul · 13/08/2026 23:22

I can lose weight
You'll always be stupid
Now fuck off.
I've used that and I'm male.

Idiots to a man ..no pun intended.
Good for you op that's some achievement in two years.

DuckWrap · 13/08/2026 16:08

Generally anything about their receding hair line. Not being able to grow it back etc.

Or looking them dead in the eye and ask them to repeat exactly what they said, again. Especially if there are other people around.

This. It makes them feel uncomfortable having to repeat it.
