Gutted - can’t take job offer for my absolute dream job 😞

Anyone else had to swallow a very bitter pill? I’m a copywriter and I’ve been offered a full time hybrid role for my favourite ever brand that I buy a lot of.

The problem is that I also have a three year old in term time nursery only (no scope for more days). I doubt I could find another suitable setting so quickly and tbh I don’t want to - she’s my priority and I don’t want to just shove her in some random childcare that she doesn’t know.

So I get that it’s my fault for being so inflexible but I just don’t see a way I can accept this job 😞

Not necessarily, it just seemed a prudent move.
About £12,000/month pre tax/NI/pension/ etc.

You can’t have been remotely enthused about this holiday you cancelled in order to afford childcare for one child when your partner is a very high earning professing.

Although given this was supposedly your dream job and you were presumably enthused to some extent about that but still intending to decline until Mumsnet pointed out the bleeding’ obvious, maybe you just don’t get enthused about much!

SheilaFentiman · 12/08/2026 06:20

I doubt it’s just about the money. If I was starting a new job and finding new childcare within a month, I’d probably prefer to cancel a holiday and take it at another time just to give more headspace for all the things that needed to get done.

If the holiday was that imminent, they’d have lost the money anyway

Depends. Some air fares and some hotels are fully flexible until the day before.

Very unusual that you can cancel an entire holiday that you were due to go to in the next week or so and not lose 100%

Disagree. Depends what you book.

Eurostar plus tickets can be moved to another date 1 hour before departure and cancelled 7 days before departure for a £25 fee. Premier Inn flex can be cancelled until 1pm on the day of the booking. Radisson Blu has a similar policy.

Hopefully the Op had book one such holiday where cancelling within a week or so in peak season would incur zero cost!

Well……I did it! Accepted the job.
Basically going to look at maximising her time in nursery and hiring a part time Nanny to handle the rest. I’ll be paid enough to cover it and we’ve also cancelled a planned holiday to help finance it that way too. So I’ll hit the ground running then see where the land lies in terms of flexibility later down the line.

Thanks for all the messages! I don’t think I’d have done it without MN making me really think about it.

Congratulations! I hope you do get some sort of holiday eventually, that you love your job and your little one loves her nursery! Exciting times!

And you were right to do so!!

Lucky that things moved on within around 36 hours of the first post, then, isn't it? Hopefully that has put your mind at rest.

Look at a Childminder or someone at Uni/college doing childcare/teaching that wants holiday work (obviously do all necessary checks, references 1st) check out childcare.com for options.

Amazing news. Huge congratulations. I’m so pleased you’ve gone for it. Wishing you every success.

sparklyblueberry2 · 13/08/2026 11:46

I turned down an interview because it was for 5 days a week and a job share was not possible, this was due to childcare and wanting to stay part time until my youngest was at school. I don’t regret this now a few years on as my time with my youngest has been absolutely precious after battling to have him.

A second job (fluffed the interview) I didn’t get and was absolutely gutted, turns out 2years later they cut the funding (NHS) and the person who got it was under immense pressure to find a new job in time.
Sometimes these things happen for a reason and you will not realise for some time after.
Keep the faith that the opportunity will come again x

G5000 · 13/08/2026 12:19

OP took the job

ClaraSais · 13/08/2026 12:20

Yay! I wish you the best of luck! 😘

LaurieFairyCake · 13/08/2026 13:11

This is fantastic news, I’ve literally been thinking about you. Well done you 🙏

Lisalanasam · 13/08/2026 13:27

Can’t you work at nights if from home ??

crochetandshit · 13/08/2026 13:57

Have you asked any of the nursery staff if they'd like to earn over the holidays?

SheilaFentiman · 13/08/2026 14:14

Bernie Sanders is once again asking people to read the OP's updates.
