Are we all ready for heatwave number 5.

I do understand though how difficult it is for some folk to manage the heat.

LumpkinPumpkin · 09/08/2026 09:54

I’d be very happy if it could just be between 17 and 22 all the time.
We’ve had a couple of days of 22/23 this week which have felt quite cool. But aside from that it’s been 26-32 most of the time for the last month or so (South East). I’d love it to just be a tiny bit cooler!

There's no frickin' end in sight for us (Surrey). I have a horrible feeling we won't be able to light a bonfire on Bonfire Night due to fire risk. 🥵🔥

I would love for this weather to continue into October November 🤣
I absolutely despise the cold wet weather

Can't believe some of the responses on here about the heat being so great. It's climate changing and not for the better. It's going to carry on getting worse, it might be novel this year but in the long term if it's affecting the environment and food production. Prices will go up all over the place and it's not as simple as ,well we import food, other countries are in the same if not worse situation than us.
Be careful what you wish for - just saying.

I agree.
It’s frightening that so many people don’t realise that this is how it’s going to be here on in, the impact of climate change is clear yet little is being done.
For wildlife and plants it will mean the extinction of many species, gone for eternity.
No, I’m not a doom merchant just an older person who finds it depressing that so few people are willing to listen to the experts about the impact of global warming because they prefer to enjoy heatwaves that are destroying the planet.

Would save a fortune on heating for 2 months, a nice 22 through October and November would be pleasant and warm enough o not have the heating on for me

Gosh, I’ve just checked the weather forecast for where I live, Bramhall near Stockport/ Manchester, and even here we are going to have a few more hot days! We’ve missed the extended periods extreme temperatures that the S have had thankfully although we could also do with some rain.

Normally I’d embrace the heat and live outside especially as I had a glass verandah installed this year but I had my second knee replacement surgery in May and the heat has affected my recovery. My knee got so swollen when it was hot and humid that I struggled to weight bear on it or even bend it. I could not easily get down the steps onto the patio to sit outside and ended up spending a lot of time lying on my bed with an ice pack on and my leg elevated on a wedge cushion. Anyone whose had a total knee replacement will know how brutal the surgery is and how important it is to do exercises to get the leg bending!

I do have three Shark fans around the house which helped me cope a bit better with day to day tasks, living alone makes this tough anyway when recovering from surgery. My daughter works for Shark and gets a huge staff discount in the sales so recently surprised me with the new Chill Pill hand held fan which I carry around with me.

Tiddlywinks63 · 09/08/2026 11:46

I’m 5 days post lung surgery, luckily my house isn’t too bad with strategically placed fans, closed curtains, opened windows etc. but I’m still breathless at times.
ds lives in London, he said it was 10° hotter there than here yesterday and close to unbearable. He usually doesn’t mind the heat at all so it must be bad.

Snuggleup · 09/08/2026 11:59

So far so good my home is at 21, outside 28.

South east and there’s no end in sight. We are off to Cornwall last week of the holidays so I’m sure it will rain then!

The one saving grace is that I’m not in my 38 degree classroom with 27 sweaty teenagers moaning about how hot it is. But I can’t get any of my summer holiday jobs done - I usually have a list of gardening, DIY and deep cleaning stuff to do because this is the only time I have time, and it’s too damn hot to do them. No lie ins either - the dog needs walking before it gets hot. The garden is yellow and my butts are empty!

It’s the fact it’s just been the same for so many weeks now. I’d complain the same if we had had two months of wind or two months of rain. The point about British weather is that we usually have some variety!

I’ve started swearing at the weather presenter in the morning now - totally irrational 😂

hattie43 · 09/08/2026 12:26

I’m in the South East aswell and I’ve had enough now . I could deal with the heat but it’s the no rain which is upsetting . My garden has died even my mature plants and hedging are on their way out . We’ve been on a hosepipe ban since beginning July . I can only use a watering can for the bare minimum as watering everything just takes too long . My whole routine is buggered , can’t walk the dogs , we spend our days hiding from the heat or go indoors to AC which is transformational but I don’t want to live indoors all summer long . I would love tropical weather , sharp downpours overnight clearing to sun in the morning .

Inthesummertimewhen · 09/08/2026 12:38

No.
I'm very over it.
However the small consolation in comparison to the one in may /June is shorter days ,marginally.
I've read the super el nino which has kicked this off is worse next year.

Same ! Misery loves company but it makes me feel better that others can't get the job list donex I don't feel as bad.

Some of mine involves a blow torch so I can't do that until we have some rain !

juldan · 09/08/2026 12:45

I have totally acclimatised to it now and sometimes think that I would love to live in a place with warm weather all year round. I am in South East and struggled at night during the first and second heatwave, but since then the nights have been ok.
I used to escape British “summer” for a week or two in my country but cannot afford it anymore, so glad to have proper summer here.
However, we do need some rain for plants and wildlife so an odd rainy day would be welcomed.
I also feel sorry for the people who struggle with the heat as I struggle when the weather is cold and I cannot afford to have the heating on for the whole day.
I also find the constant greyness, rain and short days in winter unbearable.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 09/08/2026 12:51

Just because someone is enjoying the summer weather, that does nut mean they do not care about climate change.
I hear many people moaning, whist ripping up their gardens and replacing them with tarmac. Or buying from Shein etc.
Let’s not forget though, the impact the UK has on climate change is microscopic when you look at the big culprits such as the USA and China.
I am not saying don’t do your bit, I absolutely do, but there isn’t a correlation between those mumsnetters who prefer it cold and being heavily into reducing your carbon footprint.

isthismylifenow · 09/08/2026 12:56

The weather is quite bonkers all over.

I'm in Johannesburg, South Africa. So we are in mid winter here.

The days have been warm, although nights and mornings quite chilly. So much so that a lot of trees have started blooming already (at least a month early), but what did surprise me is that the swallows are already arriving back.

BUT

We are all on high alert now as over the next few days things are changing massively, and we are expected to have snow! Up to 25cm! In Johannesburg it's pretty rare and the last time it snowed quite a bit was in 2012. Of course everyone is quite excited about this, but it's 22 degrees at the moment. The sun is shining and we are sitting outside and tomorrow and Tuesday it's due to snow and be a high of 5 degrees. Wtf.

We have been warned of the El Nina weather pattern for summer. Dry, hot and droughts. Which is the opposite of El Nino which we have had the last few summers which is more than usual rain.

I'm not sure how anyone can deny that weather is changing worldwide.

Yes, sharp downpours overnight with sun in the morning would be lovely. I also long for those spectacular European thunderstorms. Not the destructive ones, but the ones which come on suddenly with a lot of bangs and a heavy downpour of rain and then disappear after an hour or less. I love the fresh air they bring and the smell of the rain on the hot ground.

MightyGoldBear · 09/08/2026 12:58

I've felt unwell since May. I could do with some rain and some cold days just to regulate again.
If I didn't have to live my life and could live like I was on holiday 24 7 with air con and being waited on/live in the swimming pool. I'd cope much better. But as it is I've got young children, animals to look after a house to sort out and get ready for moving. It's not fun at all for me.
Hiding from the sun all day and too exhausted to be productive is rubbish.
At least with winter you can do more to warm up.

Whosthetabbynow · 09/08/2026 13:04

It’s not a ‘lovely summer’ is it. It’s abnormally high temperatures that are killing people and animals. Can’t stand it.
Edited to add: it’s exhausting. No energy. I was in Ireland for three days last week. Lovely rain in Limerick. I felt better than I had for months.

PensionPTake · 09/08/2026 13:10

Luckily I'm on summer hols so can hide inside. I ordered some heat reflecting blinds last week and i'm hoping they will be up by weds evening to test them out on Thurs.

YouSawBrigadoon · 09/08/2026 13:11

We will definitely look back upon this as a ‘lovely summer’ for the fact we’ve spent so much time with friends outside and we’ve often been outside still at midnight. Unheard of any other year.

mondaytosunday · 09/08/2026 13:13

35 degrees on Thursday predicted here in London. Can’t stand it! I have a desert for a back garden.

NoDrums · 09/08/2026 13:13

The heat outside is not the issue for me, I love it, along with the sunshine. It’s the boiling flat that’s the problem. In other countries, you get to have air cons. Here, no. So the suffering that comes from being inside a house or flat that’s hot is immense. That’s the part I hate.

socks1107 · 09/08/2026 13:15

I am absolutely not ready. I am coping and some days enjoying it, I mean it’s lovely to have the sunshine and we often moan about rain in August. But the last heatwave made me sick, already this morning I’m feeling drained and out of sorts. I’ve no option but to commute into London and it’s unbearable on the trains tbh.
we cope with a few days here and there of plus 30 but this years wave of heat waves is exhausting now so no I’m really not looking forward to the next week

There are many people I know with aircons, they have purchased either last year or this year to combat the heat inside their homes.

Im going to purchase some outside window suckers to stop the sunlight on one room - as its heated up all afternoon and the window suckers would stop this happening

ThisNewZebra · 09/08/2026 14:12

I'm hating it.

I have spring onset SAD and this year has just been hell.

Can't wait till it's dark at 4.30pm.
