Another heatwave coming.
Are we all ready for heatwave number 5.

i saw a crow with his mouth open, apparently it is done to cool down.
i see empty ponds and birds hopping around desperate for water
i worry about the animals

We have three earthenware dishes full of water and a bird bath in the garden. I often see the little birds drinking out of them. It is a lovely sight

We also have lots of butterflies and bees. Half of our lawn has gone over to clover, which the bees love. It's the only bit that is green.

I'm hating it.

I have spring onset SAD and this year has just been hell.

Can't wait till it's dark at 4.30pm.

I love the extra light. Our solar panels generate many more units of electricity on the longer, brighter days. We get £££ from our feed in tariff and the electricity we generate goes towards offsetting the energy required to run aircon units among other things.

fryfryfry · 09/08/2026 16:16

It’s not a heatwave, it’s just summer. We’re in summer.

HoraceCope · 09/08/2026 16:39

My clover has been and gone but it was appreciated by the bees while it lasted

I thought this El nino wasn't affecting us until the winter?

Would you say "its just winter" if you got snowed in

SmugglersHaunt · 09/08/2026 16:42

No. I’m in inner London and it’s like walking through soup. The other day there was a slightly chilly evening and I got so excited at the thought of autumn and winter. This summer can piss off, then piss off some more. And don’t get me started on the Thomas Heatherwick-designed Routemaster buses which are basically mobile Tandoori ovens

I 💯 get it.

I know a lot of people really love it and it benefits them in lots of ways.

It's horrible for me though and really effects my MH.

And I don't have the 'accepted SAD' so while I have acceptance and empathy for the people who love the time of year that effects me badly.

The same won't be extended for me when I'm loving the cold, rain and short days and people say I'm 'weird' and I'm 'miserable' not enjoying the summer.

I’m in the south-very-south of England and it’s been like 25-35C for 2 full months now, just 5 minutes in rain in the last two months, landscape looks apocalyptic with deep cracks in the ground, half the gardens have died and dried to a crisp

i love warm weather but not on days where I have to get up early to walk to dog early (every day this summer!) then work in an office that has no airco

i’d love it if I did not have to walk the dog, clean and cook and work… it is holiday weather in a work setting 😢

Abracadeborah · 09/08/2026 17:30

Yes I’m loving this. Best summer in years

I am considering moving to Northern Canada. Or anywhere I cannot boil to death, that would be a start.

The entire county (Cornwall) is yellow, the trees are dropping their leaves and looking half dead already, the grass playing fields here are mostly dust and the grass practically gone, the dog hates walking on what's left of the grass now because of all the sharp dead plants hidden beneath it all.

I haven't seen a hedgehog in a fortnight when we usually see them every night and I haven't heard an owl in weeks.

You don't need to go to those extremes. Just head up here to Scotland! We've had a few days of slightly warmer weather but the last few weeks certainly haven't been heatwave temperatures for the most part.

Mischance · 09/08/2026 17:39

I am about to get my two wild areas cut down for safety reasons. There is a massive wildfire 30 miles away but the smoke is nearby, and it is impossible to sit in the garden. One of the wild areas is on a walled bank with an LPG tank underneath!

NelferchyLlyn · 09/08/2026 17:48

I am conflicted. Super worried about the environment, lots of chicks dying and the wildfires are awful.

However, I love warmth and outside living including into the evening. I wear my shorts and vest tops most days.

Im generaly a cold person so usually wear loads of layers. My office is freezing cold with aircon so have to wear socks/jumpers to work so cant wait to finish and enjoy the heat.

Im in the south west so its pretty hot.

We used to get snowed in every winter in the 90s. The summers were the same as this.

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2026 17:50

Im done with the heat now. 25 now feels like a reasonably cool temperature when by normal standards that would be hot. Garden never cools down, no shade. And am fed up of the smell of BBQs and burning fields and boy racer exhaust fumes ( and noise) Just come back from the Canaries and didn't have to take an allergy tablet once. Used to be a sun baby.

MyPlumHelper · 09/08/2026 17:53

SaraHoliday · 08/08/2026 22:44

No. Sob 🥲. I want it to rain and be freezing temperatures.

Well, we got a solid two months of that, at the beginning of the year. And everyone complained.

QuickPlumLeader · 09/08/2026 17:53

No heatwaves here - I actually had the heating on this week it was so cold and wet. It’s grim.

The bedrooms of our flats face the main road. Obvs there is a pavement but there is the grass verge in front of the flats which end at the pavement. Im terrified some careless fucker is going to flick the end of a lit cigarette

DoubleShotEspresso · 09/08/2026 17:58

We are in one of the aforementioned overheated flats. This school holiday has been anything but a break, sheer hell dealing with this weather, am absolutely dreading next week.
These heatwaves make me an ill, unproductive & zombified version of myself. Cannot wait for autumn, my favourite season.
I cannot get my head round snybody actually enjoying this weather, it’s destroying me slowly since heatwave 1.

LizzieSiddal · 09/08/2026 17:59

We’ve made some changes (because during the first heatwave our kitchen/ dining area was 32 degrees all day long) I’d already bought inside thermal blinds last year but they’ve not made much of a difference, so this year we’ve had skylight covers made and bought 2 awnings to go over the patio doors and windows.
Today has been 24 degrees in the kitchen so a massive difference!

We’re also going to plant some trees in the garden over autumn time as there no shade at all. So still things to do.

If there is short grass on the verge and it has a bit of green in it it should be OK.

It is a heatwave. Heatwave has a specific meaning. It does not mean summer.

JaneIves · 09/08/2026 18:10

I’m in the SE. Regretting getting rid of the above ground pool last year after a few damp squibs of ‘summers’ and complaints of ‘it’s too cold!’

The west facing garden is all but dead. The dog looks forlornly at me at 5/6pm every evening.

I’m being bitten to buggery every night too.

But, I’d rather this than endless days of drab grey and rain. The last winter was hard, caused our photonias to shed almost their entire leaf, every day soaking wet and sodden, so this never ending sun is glorious!

TeaAndALittlePeace · 09/08/2026 18:17

Hell yeah, bring it on! Love it 😎
