It's not racist to want to talk about migration, but generally, when people do want to talk about migration, the conversation is racist and not based on any verifiable facts.
Net migration to the UK is falling rapidly. The number of small boats attempting to enter UK waters is falling. It is not the big issue people think it is.
And what's always forgotten when people want to "discuss immigration" is the human element. These people are human beings, not boat people, not illegals, not terrorists, but human beings. Human beings who are literally risking death because the life they have is intolerable. Have we forgotten Alun Kurdi already?
They're not making these crossings for shits and giggles or because they want to claim their "free house and money". They just want to live somewhere safe, with enough money to support themselves and their family, which they are more than willing to work for.
Does that mean we should welcome them with open arms? No, that would be silly, and it wouldn't mean a better life for the migrants or for UK residents, but we can show some humanity rather than standing on the coast screaming "send them back! Sink their boat!" which appears to be what a lot of those wanting to discuss migration want to happen.
We shouldn't accept anyone and everyone into the UK, but nor should we round them up like animals, shove them en masse into a hotel with a few quid a day to live on, and expect things to work out. They should be processed quickly and respectfully and then be provided with safe passage back to their home country should it be deemed safe to return them.
We also need to accept that we need some immigration; we have an aging population, a falling birthrate, and an economy that relies on the population either growing or remaining stable. Until someone finds a better way to run the economy, we need more taxpayers than retirees, which means we need migrants to come here and pay taxes.
