@SerendipityJane absolutely the staff were doing their best and one nurse cried and said this wasn’t the care they had come into nursing to deliver

Andy Burnham was spot on about the conditions and lack of recognition for the workers in social care too, the agency our carers came from didn’t pay their travel time, they were wonderful people and as he said from many countries. They were compassionate and highly skilled, many of them were qualified nurses in their own countries and told me about the barriers that are put in their way here which prevent them working in the NHS. I couldn’t have kept my husband at home without them.

Telegraph didn't last long before their 'workers face new tax to fund social care' headline.

Telegraph didn't last long before their 'workers face new tax to fund social care' headline.

It’s having an absolute field day with negative speculation at the moment, winding its readership up into a real lather. Allison Pearson was (unintentionally) hilarious yesterday.

Telegraph didn't last long before their 'workers face new tax to fund social care' headline.

So care workers aren’t workers and don’t pay tax?
People who receive social care have never paid taxes?
Blossom was right that people would rather play the good health lottery and complaining about ‘bed blockers’.

DuncinToffee · 29/07/2026 12:44

Care work is not a 'proper' job.

At least that is used when talking about Angela Rayner.

Or when people want forced labour jobs.

It was lovely to hear Burnham’s recognition of the skill, professionalism and compassion needed to deliver top class care. The presser this morning was really excellent. It’s so nice to have a bit of hope again.

Agree. I think that was his best speech so far. No hesitancy and came across as sincerely committed. I admire the way he manages to make a speech about something so troubling sound positive.

Evenstar · 29/07/2026 13:31

@DuncinToffee it was good to hear that Angela Rayner will be involved in this initiative as well having worked in care and having been a family caregiver as well. When I met her during the 2024 election campaign I heard her have a conversation with a carer and her knowledge and compassion were very moving.

I haven’t heard his speech as yet, but this all sounds very positive to me, as a carer to my 17 year old DD and with an elderly MIL with dementia.

Edited to add, also with a DB who is diagnosed autistic and in a sheltered retirement flat.

BIossomtoes · 29/07/2026 14:08

That’s lovely.

There is no pressure on dd. She desperately wants to start a grown up life in her own home so will take any job she is offered.

She has breathing space though, we aren't going to make her homeless and can afford to feed her so sh won't starve. She also realises how fortunate she is to be in this position- she has friends who are not.

Edited to say thank you for all the nice comments for dd.

Llttledrummergirl · 29/07/2026 14:28

Something that amazes me about hospitals, aside from what I have observed in our local hospital, a relative who is an extremely experienced nurse(approaching retirement) spends half her time cleaning, because cleaners aren't allowed to actully clean in clin8cal areas. This seems like insanity. Pay your hospital cleaners an extra 50p an hour, get them to clean in the same way the nurses do and free up your much more expensive nurse to you know nurse the ill.

The nurses are also moving people on trolleys, which I'm pretty sure used to be a porters job.

I really hope Burnhams cross party talks on social provide a good way forward. This will make such a difference everywhere.

Same as myself and she certainly resonates. I won't be alone either. Not forgetting Ed Davey either.

Andy Burnham wants to fix social care. It’s personal for him and for a lot of us too

It’s only seven now, isn’t it? Or is that dwarves? And no leader.

SerendipityJane · 29/07/2026 15:12

Pay your hospital cleaners an extra 50p an hour,

Extra 50p and hour ?

You realise that would double what carers are paid. ?

Glad he's been charged. Reform obviously thought his "banter" was OK, as they reinstated him after initially suspending him.

Squirrels are paid more in peanuts than carers!

Especially when they become old enough to claim a pension.
