I love this. It's a much kinder, hopefully and humane approach.

It's also true. Burnham should look at what the Netherlands in terms of what they did to address NEET. Their rates are currently rising again - what's happening in the global economy has a lot to do with that - but they still have one of the lowest rates in Europe. And getting there was not done through punitive measures putting young people in poverty - it was done through investment, through targeted interventions in schools and through targeted interventions for school leavers. All that happened under right of centre governments too - the right here really needs to take off its 'cut everything, punish poverty and it'll all be fine'blinkers. Because doing the same thing that hasn't worked before but harder - well, that's insanity.

That sounds like very much the right approach to me. How would reducing their benefits magically equip them to get into work. Especially if they never worked in the past. Apart from anything else, what employer would be willing to take them on?

pointythings · 29/07/2026 09:44

My DS was technically a NEET between graduating and getting his NHS job. He didn't need out of work benefits though, he had savings. We need to start acknowledging that life is bloody hard for twentysomethings even if they don't start from a position of deep disadvantage.

John Cleese is supporting Lowe

it's what he would have wanted

I find it very sad. I always enjoyed watching shows like Fawlty Towers and Life of Brian. It’s very disappointing, though sadly not surprising.

My DS worked in low paying hospitality jobs since graduation whilst applying for many other jobs. He has saved enough to go travelling for bit. Just to get away from it all.

We are also fortunate enough that we can help him out if necessary.

I have a DS in his mid to late 20s and can confirm the accuracy of that article. He got a much better degree than me yet I bought my first house at 24 whereas he rents with no real prospect of buying. He’s in a really interesting job at the moment but it’s a short term contract and doesn’t pay particularly well either. It’s been the same since he graduated, temporary jobs, and he spent a while as a NEET too.

Lowe has said he wants to turn the clock back to the 80s - not at all surprising that Cleese feels similarly. Wishful thinking by privileged men.

TBF to Badenoch, she's not attending the cross party talks because she is having pre-planned surgery. (For what I do not know).

And Reform kicking off because NF hasn’t been invited. Spoiler: He’s not an MP.

Braverman complaining because according to her they are the largest party following the council elections. Someone needs to explain politics to her.

Someone needs to explain humanity and humility to her.

She’s probably only worried that she can’t do a SM post about!

Maybe reform are actually disgruntled because this highlights how little power they actually have?

This a good article from the BBC. Congratulations to your daughter @Llttledrummergirl

Yes I read that earlier too and was meant to link it here (except RL took over and I’ve just come back 🤣).

Can I just address the subject of austerity ? A couple of posters appear to have been soft soaping the Tories, suggesting that they pursued it without understanding the damage it would do.

Let's be clear here. The Tories pursued austerity precisely because it would lead to the results it did. Have they ever said otherwise ?

Less observant people sometimes wonder how the Tories can evoke such visceral hatred in normal decent human beings. Maybe they can appreciate why now.

As as we can see with the sainted Kemi - they would do it all over again if they had the chance.

Personally, I would have highlighted the uselessness of Reform et al.

"We didn't invite you, because we already know your contribution. However rest assured we will put a poster in front of an empty chair with a sign saying "Down with this sort of thing", so you will be fully (possibly over) represented.

Just been watching Andy Burnham’s speech about social care, as someone with recent experience of social care, hospitals and being a carer I felt seen and understood. This time they must not fail.

placemats · 29/07/2026 11:03

That was a great press conference by Burnham. Not only cross party collaboration but a call for the press to collaborate as well.

He made a very valid point about the 'screaming headlines'

Must not fail is subjective though as there will always be someone on a vox pop that will say it has failed.

You can safely ignore 5% of all polling.

Evenstar · 29/07/2026 11:12

@placemats I agree, but carrying on as things are cannot and should not be an option. When you have seen a terminally ill person spend 24 hours on a trolley in a corridor, with 22 other people most of them elderly and many with dementia, you know that this “system” is breaking the NHS and is utterly inhumane for those relying on it.

Not to say inhumane for those who have to work in it.

Yes the call for the press to support was a smart move.

especially with cross party collaboration and our media being so partisan!

I agree 💯 that the current system is failing everyone, the person on the corridor trolley, the carer alongside them and the overworked staff.

And as Burnham pointed out the, screaming headlines' does nothing other than engender fear and despondency , which helps no one who is caring for the vulnerable.

It's a subtle (or not so subtle) nudge towards a more war-based approach. Where the media can be accused of being unpatriotic if they don't big up our brave boys.

I suspect there will be something in Sun Tzu or Marcus Aurelius about overcoming opposition by making it complicit. But then as a liberal snowflake, I would.
