Probably some lefty nut job.

I guess there's a chance it could be political. Like when that right wing nut job killed Jo Cox. 🙁 The police don't seem to think it is at this stage though.

Having silly ideas about endless globalisation and zero borders (very middle class/first world notions) and actually being a hard headed serious and focussed economic migrant.

I think possibly you don't know many left leaning people or many immigrants.

I think the police know who it is. Hence the not releasing anymore info at the moment.

Do you think they are waiting until tomorrow to announce news of an arrest rather then before the football for fear of riots? I think so.

I keep thinking of Anne and this case, moreso then any recent news story. It's just so horrible and shocking. It has really upset us.

To be honest this wouldn’t surprise me. There has been speculation locally that an arrest was coming as all of a sudden multiple unmarked police cars headed off up the fuel carriageway at lightning speed. Followed moments later by more marked cars and a response van. That was at lunchtime today.
Of course it could be unrelated but we don’t get a lot of this type of police activity round here. So it definitely felt unusual.

Why would there be riots?

If England lose tensions are high etc. There was rioting recently on other murder cases

At first the police said they were holding a ‘white man’ as a suspect. I have never seen them name a ‘black man’ like this. Why is the race important when it is only a suspect? They are also saying it is not necessarily ‘politically motivated’. I don’t believe that for a moment. I think it will be someone on the hard left who dislikes Ann Widdecombe because she is fearless, a member of Reform and she says what she thinks.

The police specified 'white British male' so people wouldn't jump to other conclusions, ie minorities, other fair game ethnicities which would be followed by the inevitable riots and civil unrest.

I'd thought that was pretty obvious.

It must be very worrying for people locally.

I work with the elderly. Many of whom live alone in similar sorts of remote locations. They particularly have been very anxious and unsettled since the news first broke.

EnquiringMindsWantToKnow · 10/07/2026 15:44

Seems like she fell and died from a head injury. But of course the Daily Mail exaggerate the "police investigating a murder" because obviously the police have to rule that out.

Feel silly now?

Why would football fans riot over the murder of AW? The murderer is allegedly a white male so even the racists wouldn't have anything to riot about, unlike the cases you are alluding to.

Tryagain26 · 10/07/2026 16:16

Yes I didn't like her. She was homophobic, racist and very narrow minded.
But I wouldn't wish that on anyone. She was 78 hardly a threat to anyone now. I really hope whatever happened it was quick and she didn't suffer.

She had close friends who were gay. She wasn't homophobic, she was just opposed to gay marriage for the same reasons she was opposed to women priests and abortion. I don't agree with her on any of those things but she had deeply held principles and she stuck to them.

What makes you say she was a racist?

and it's ok if I quote you on that?

Quote me on what and to whom? Clive?

While this is obviously speculation, it seems very unlikely to me that an elderly woman living rurally in a quiet part of the country would be murdered by a random person in her own home. I would be pretty surprised if it doesn't turn out to be someone who disliked her political views (I'm in no way suggesting that person would be an immigrant, just to be clear).

Unfortunately, regarding police statements about it not being political, a lot of people, including me, these days distrust initial police statements until further corroborating information is released.

notwhingingjuststatingfacts · 11/07/2026 22:28

The police have just widened the cordon around the house. Now a good 200m in all directions.

Whom on earth is going to riot over the death of Anne Widdicombe? That’s just ludicrous.

But people know they always do this, and so don"t believe them, the person was released without charge anyway!

Released AFTER the police said they were looking for a white British man.

She was dead for 24 hours before being found and lived alone, what are they basing the description on?

Sadly Ann was attacked and killed a few hours after this video. Devon and Cornwall police said: "We believe the attack took place on Wednesday 8 July at around 12.30pm."

eta she was attacked 24 hours before she was found dead by paramedics. Horrible.

That’s weird, the link no longer works

Security cameras maybe?

She was murdered.

Did you check the time and date I posted that? Not the ‘own’ you think that was.

No they have it all wrong, the news specifically said it was a white man and there was no political motive at all, Sky have moved on anyway, they are covering one of their own tonight, they don"t need to speculate on a case that is nothing to see here, nothing at all.

Oh, I know, they've long since moved on to the next boneheaded remark when you've proved them wrong.

YellingAway · 11/07/2026 23:05

I think it’s a sad reflection on some sections of society who celebrate the murder of an elderly woman in their own home. Maybe they should take time to reflect on that.

KeepPumping · 11/07/2026 23:08

Lins77 · 11/07/2026 22:58

Security cameras maybe?

Latest news is they are not releasing CCTV images or a description, strange if they had a white British male showing his face on camera as he went into the house to kill her?
