That's just awful.

Someone who always made you think, even if you didn't agree with her views.

HoldMyWine · 10/07/2026 16:06

Not really unusual. Police attend any sudden or unexpected death on behalf of the coroner. Doesn’t necessarily mean that anything criminal has taken place.

Rosecoffeecup · 10/07/2026 16:06

Looking for a white male suspect. Wow. I am genuinely shocked.

WrongKindOfFeminist · 10/07/2026 16:07

'Devon and Cornwall Police say the 78-year-old was found at her home on Dartmoor in Devon on Thursday with serious injuries
They are looking for a white male in connection with their investigation, which they say is "moving at a significant pace"'

Gosh just seen it’s a murder investigation. How awful.

It's now a murder investigation

ShesRunningOutTheDoor · 10/07/2026 16:10

She was an intelligent articulate independent person. You don’t have to agree with her views to appreciate her.

the80sweregreat · 10/07/2026 16:10

I was so shocked that they are investigating her murder. It is awful.

Whatever your politics, she was an intelligent woman, I enjoyed listening to her. So sad.

Exactly that. @Mumsnet, why isn't my posting of the same image allowed?

Seems like she fell and died from a head injury. But of course the Daily Mail exaggerate the "police investigating a murder" because obviously the police have to rule that out.

The BBC not say the police are treating as a murder investigation. I know mn doesn't like the DM but they often get things out early.

Police launch a murder investigation.....White male suspect

Boomer55 · 10/07/2026 16:15

She admitted to falling in her shower a few days ago. She could have just suffered a slow brain bleed. 🤷‍♀️

GoodHonest · 10/07/2026 15:49

I'm really shocked.

Yes I didn't like her. She was homophobic, racist and very narrow minded.
But I wouldn't wish that on anyone. She was 78 hardly a threat to anyone now. I really hope whatever happened it was quick and she didn't suffer.

EnquiringMindsWantToKnow · 10/07/2026 16:16

Did she say anything particularly controversial on Wednesday when she was apparently on a programme with Farage?

Or was it maybe a burglary gone wrong?

placemats · 10/07/2026 16:17

The BBC reports:

"Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has urged the public "to avoid speculation and allow the police investigation to progress".

In a post on X, she writes that the circumstances of Ann Widdecombe's death are "extremely distressing".

She says she was "deeply saddened" to learn of her death, adding that her "thoughts are with Ann's family and loved ones".

Mahmood says she has spoken with the chief constable of Devon and Cornwall Police and says the Home Office "stands ready to provide whatever support they need"."

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/07/2026 16:17

Really shocked by this turn of events, like most I thought natural causes. Gosh!

What part of do not speculate do you not understand?

None of that was a lie but the idea of a murder is nonetheless shocking.

I am genuinely shocked by what some people have become.

That they are so callous and cruel is just ... it's horrific.

Nobody needs to agree with someone's politics to be respectful if they die, and to see some making jokes about her having died a violent and probably horrible death is just beyond what I think is acceptable.
