They will have had their reasons. There will have been a reasonable suspicion against this man and it would have been remiss of them not to act in the light of danger to the public. They would have been slated if they had not.

So did the police just pick up some random man, delay the press conference for almost two hours so that they could announce they had arrested random man, keep him in custody for almost 24 hours and then, after all this, suddenly discover that...

he is as innocent as a new born babe.

Well call, me an old cynic but I would like to know on what grounds they did all this. Do the police arrest complete randoms?

Have the police arrested Herbert Heather for his social media hate crimes yet?

If not, why not?

Exactly, and you know what I find bizarre?

Police arrest someone and say they do not believe there is a terrorist or political motive.

Let's the guy go.

Police continue search and still say they do not think this was politically linked.
What??

TemperanceWest · 11/07/2026 16:16

Oh good. The conspiracy theories have started.

Some people will be very disappointed if the murderer isn't an immigrant or a left winger. Or better yet, both.

I think Ann would say shut up and let the police do their job, tbh.

He needs arresting for those posts

Heather Herbert is a disgusting human. He is bitter, twisted and hateful because Ann Widdecombe was what he can never become..a woman.

ENGLANDalltheway · 10/07/2026 16:46

The vile male 'Heather Herbert' is typical male behaviour if a trans identified male that worries REAL women. That's the type of male that condons violence towards women who believe in biological sex. He isn't doing the trans discussion any favours at all.

I totally agree. Heather Herbert is a disgusting human. He is bitter, twisted and hateful because Ann Widdecombe was what he can never become..a woman.

At first the police said they were holding a ‘white man’ as a suspect. I have never seen them name a ‘black man’ like this. Why is the race important when it is only a suspect? They are also saying it is not necessarily ‘politically motivated’. I don’t believe that for a moment. I think it will be someone on the hard left who dislikes Ann Widdecombe because she is fearless, a member of Reform and she says what she thinks.

EnquiringMindsWantToKnow · 10/07/2026 15:44

Seems like she fell and died from a head injury. But of course the Daily Mail exaggerate the "police investigating a murder" because obviously the police have to rule that out.

Unfortunately that doesn’t seem
to be the case. It’s a murder investigation.

Sinescure · 10/07/2026 17:51

She left the C of E and converted to Catholicism in protest at the ordination of women. Not a conviction I can even remotely respect, and I was raised Catholic.

I didn't like anything about her but a very sad way for a life to end.

Why do you even feel it’s necessary to say you didn’t like anything about her? She’s dead for christs sake.

Not really. The police will normally investigate a death if it was not expected. It doesn’t mean anything sinister happened. It’s to establish facts and cause of death.

She was murdered.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 11/07/2026 19:09

Wasceally gob smacked and shocked about this awful incident to an elderley woman

Not a fan of the Conservatives but did like Ms Widdlcombes straight to the point speaking manner. Her own person.

You were a great character
And you will be well remembered.

RIP
Ann

Right but she posted that twenty seven hours ago.

GoodHonest · 11/07/2026 19:16

I think the police know who it is. Hence the not releasing anymore info at the moment.

I think it is all very sad; whether or not one agreed with her views and political stance, she was most certainly a vibrant personality, and I recall some years ago when she was still a Tory MP, her going out into the streets of London and talking to various teenagers and thinking at least she had taken the trouble to get out there to see for herself some of the realities of the community. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her on Strictly, too; she was about my level of ability on the dance floor!. Love her or not, she did not deserve to be murdered, and I can only hope she had one swift blow to her head and knew nothing more about it rather than dying in fear. RIP Ann

upinaballoon · 11/07/2026 19:58

Sometime today, on the radio, it was pointed out that when she was Home Secretary, she visited every prison. The implication was that not all Home Secretaries manage to do that and that she took her job very seriously.
When everyone pulled out of Afghanistan I think there were people still there who'd helped the British by providing information etc. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't she make a bit of noise about the responsibility of the British government to get those people out safely?

Friends told to 'brace for bad news' though - that does seem like there is real potential for there to have been foul play. Hope that will give Peter Tatchell and the others who have been gloating so unpleasantly some pause for thought.

What was Peter saying about her?

Yes, they were VERY keen to get the "white" and "non-political motive" out there, how would they have a clue about the motive at this stage anyway, they don!t have anyone in custody?

Not sure the two are compatible TBH.

To avoid unfounded rumours spreading online and working people up to violently target minority groups.

If they didn't expressly say it was a white male, someone would be confidently announcing it's an asylum seeker and many would believe them and start attacking hotels where asylum seekers are housed. Or something along those lines.

notwhingingjuststatingfacts · 11/07/2026 20:31

I live very locally to Ann. It’s an odd feeling knowing I was driving less than a mile away at the time she was likely attacked. I also suspect I saw the ambulance headed to her home the following day.
Lots of anxiety locally about what’s happened as it’s so rare for things like this to happen here.

Which two?

riceuten · 11/07/2026 20:52

Reform UK supporters locally have already implied

i) it was an immigrant
ii) it was revenge for her political views
iii) the united left are celebrating

They never miss a chance to exploit tragedy

It must be very worrying for people locally.

Which two?

Having silly ideas about endless globalisation and zero borders (very middle class/first world notions) and actually being a hard headed serious and focussed economic migrant.

No they have it all wrong, the news specifically said it was a white man and there was no political motive at all, Sky have moved on anyway, they are covering one of their own tonight, they don"t need to speculate on a case that is nothing to see here, nothing at all.
