I found this thought provoking. Personally I am unshocked by the suggestion that there are some people in the US who happily want to reinstate slavery. Because there are people in the UK who would do the same.

America's political and economic debates continue to intensify as some farmers, workers, and families express frustration over rising costs and unmet expectations. In this video, we examine the claims being made online, the historical context surrounding Black farmers, and why many Americans feel the economy isn't working for them. This video is a commentary and analysis of publicly discussed issues and is intended to encourage informed discussion.

Have the wannabe slave-owners thought about the expense of having to house, clothe and feed these people? Would it be more or less expensive than paying them a minimal wage and expecting them to house, clothe and feed themselves? There would have to be some sort of minimum amount of food or the slaves would be too undernourished to work effectively.

Llttledrummergirl · 13/07/2026 18:52

Piracy on the high seas.

This was Trumps play all long surely. Holding the world to ransom.

We need to say enough, no more and ground American planes in the UK, ban American military from using European Air space and tell him to get his troops the fuck out.

I am sick of pandering to this piece of shit and his enablers, it's gone on too long. He can fuck off

I have heard it seriously hypothesised that the Southern (Slave) states would have started to decline simply for economic reasons even if there had been no war about them seceding; a slave economy theoretically isn't viable in competition with one that doesn't rely on slave labour. I had no idea how valid the arguments being used actually were.

Yes, the free labour is great, but it carries expenses of its own. Or so it seemed to go.

I know one should not speak ill of the dead, and never speak of the dead except to praise them, but there are definitely people who make me feel I don't want to follow those rules. Lindsey Graham was one of them.

Just read him described as "one of the most infamously pusillanimous poltroons in the recorded history of time."

They actually did in the West Indies and the solution is why slaves there had a very different experience in some ways and why their descendants were able to be socially mobile before those in the US who had only experienced dependancy.

The solution for some slave owners in the West Indies was to give slaves plots of land to grow food, which enabled them to become self sufficient. They were allowed to barter the excess. Not only did this ease the cost of owning/maintaining slaves but it gave slaves some autonomy in their lives, allowing them to be enterprising and aspirational after slavery was abolished.

What can I say - Colin Powell, the first black Secretary of State had Jamaican immigrant parents.

Disclaimer - this is not to paint a rosy picture of slavery. It was a horrible period in history, but I'm trying to show that not all slaves were treated as they were in the US.
There were also slave revolts against their treatment, in the West Indies.

Effectively, American slaves had only the stick, so no incentive to do more than just get by and be fed and clothed. West Indian slaves owned what they produced on their little plots of land. They had the carrot. It led to a completely different mindset.

Oil price jumped over 9% today. (Bloomberg)
Brent crude is currently $83.60 and increasing every hour
WTI $78.29

Nepotism is alive and well then.

FWIW it's not too uncommon for a relative (often the spouse) be named to fill a vacant seat until the next election/inauguration. It's usually a situation where that person agrees to be 'guided' by TPTB in order to maintain the status quo of the deceased's political stances. They're simply a 'safe' and pliable place-saver until a 'real' politician is elected to the new term.

Judge Kathleen Williams also sanctions Trump's lawyers, issues monetary sanctions, and harshly criticizes DOJ's "untenable" conduct.

Sooo, it looks like the decision didn't 'vacate' the settlement, but sort of 'nullifies' it?

You know, given that Trump and the repugs tend to be the conspiracists, I can't help but think all the existing conspiracies are way over thought and complex, and that really the actual conspiracies today are being done by a dumb fuck.

Putin sends Trump a dead fish message with Lindsey Graham. And a few days later Trump potentially sends oil prices through the roof.

So that will please Putin. And coincidentally, Trump controls VZ oil, and look here.

" The $100 per barrel threshold cited by energy analysts represents the approximate crude oil price level necessary to make large portions of Venezuela’s heaviest reserves economically viable for commercial development, meaning that at current price levels around $60 per barrel, significant portions of the declared reserve base remain stranded assets lacking commercial viability"

Trump also benefits from high oil prices.

A PROCLAMATION

"The Grand Staircase-Escalante region contains several resources that are vital to our economic and national security. These resources include several critical minerals, such as chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, silver, thorium, titanium, uranium, vanadium, zinc, and zirconium, create jobs, fuel prosperity, and are essential to important sectors of the economy of the United States, including defense, manufacturing, and transportation."

Ach, it's just a million or so acres of protected federal lands that will become an opencast now.

Not true. Donald Trump will die and they'll all fall.

Into bankruptcy and into jail.

That's what they did in Ireland. But no one was "given" land. Land was rented and landlords were brutal.

Agree. There will be no repercussions for Trump himself, but his offspring and lackeys are going to end up paying his debts, with interest.

I have been off the news for a few days, because the break off the MOU and back to full war has to be the utterly most stupid thing two countries have ever ever done in all geopolitics history, bar, maybe, the Persians killing the trade ambassadors sent by Genghis Khan and the start of the Fiest World War.

Trump has been instructed to return a few billions, from the illegal tariffs. But, will the customers that paid the inflated prices get any refund? Because I doubt it. And so, this becomes a way of making money, lots of it, and it should be investigated! I bet you someone is sitting on a new import/ exports firm, killing it.
