Autumn and winter in the south won’t be the cold fest we had years ago. It’ll be warmer and wetter, but those cold frosty mornings are almost a thing of the past.

We don’t know this

If the Gulf Stream stops bringing warm currents from the tropics in the Atlantic we could easily have Canada winters of harsh -20C, our weather in the winter is mild for our latitude because of the Gulf Stream - so if that weakens - who knows?

There will be another COP meeting this year, the data will be presented, but no leaders will do anything effective. We have no hope to keep temperature rises under 1.5C, we will put the amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere for this rise to happen before 2030.

There is a likelihood of more summer storms, warmer air holds more moisture, which cause more damage because trees with leaves on have a greater surface area to be blown down, locally our fire brigade have put out double figure fires this week. Nice dry ground to get them going.

And this is before tipping points are added in.

So yes we are likely to get more and more heatwaves in with a lot of other extreme weather.

I think the days of steady, predictable, largely temperate seasons are rapidly drawing to an end. But hey politicians have been presented with this data at COP meetings for decades.

The heatwave in Europe was two weeks ago. It's finished now. What's the temperature where you are? Someone mentioned 22C outside. That's not a heatwave lol.

22c at night time! I was in Europe and whilst the weather was hot they also had periods of rain. The SE has had unrelenting temperatures and no rain which will impact water supplies and there will be higher food costs as well.

Mid to high 30s all this week and next in Paris, Madrid and Rome.

They are clearly more adapted for these temperatures. Not just physically but behaviour wise.

Denim4ever · 08/07/2026 22:45

With the exception of 1976, heatwave temps were peaking at 24 degrees until the last decade or so. If you are in London, East Anglia etc. heat is humid and unpleasant.

Interestingly, it's been raining in Germany this week as it was a year ago when DS was inter railing. We seem to be getting more French/Italian weather with added humidity.

This is an excellent, informative post.

Can I ask your opinion on our winters? Do you think, as it stands they’re likely to be mild and wet going forward? I saw no frost at all this last Winter (North West)

I can cope with summer heatwaves going forward if we are guaranteed proper autumns and winters!

Darklane · 09/07/2026 00:31

In 1976 it lasted for weeks , late June till August bank holiday when the heavens opened with the first rain we’d had since early June. High twenties & often over thirty degrees. We had standpipes in the streets when they turned the water off & water from them was rationed. Domestic showers were very rare & air conditioning in shops & offices unheard of. Fridges were becoming popular though not everyone had one yet & freezers were in shops like Iceland, not houses!
It’s hot now but at least we have water still & just a few days( so far) not weeks & weeks like we had then. We had a lot of moorland fires up here.
But everyone just carried on pretty much as normal.

unluckystar · 09/07/2026 01:01

Move to the North East . South has it for 10 plus days we have 3 days at most 🤣

I don’t think that we will get predictable much anything going forward.

So no personally I think Autumn/Winters will be either wet, wet, wet and stormy, or deep freeze with hard icy travel conditions.

The days of skipping through crunchy copper leaves and glistening Jack Frost will be the exceptions in time.

I also think there will be a host of new insects we are unprepared for, including possibly the malaria fly and invasive species like the Asian hornet that can wipe out bees will arrive.

Climate change is ramping up, it’s only just getting started, this heatwave is just the beginning.

TheChosenTwo · 09/07/2026 07:06

I’d be happy with this weather until September when I’d like it to switch to properly autumnal, blue skies and a freshness in the air.
I love the heat and sun in general, I feel solar powered. Yeah I get a bit sweaty at times but it’s nothing a shower won’t rectify.
We don’t have aircon at home but I do go to the office a few days a week, it’s got a/c but I find it too harsh and have a jumper and a blanket on my chair!
I do a desk job, doing physical labour in this weather would be less fun, more tiring and quite hard work. I used to be classroom based and it was a struggle when it heated up. Kids were more disengaged and agitated than usual.
I don’t generally sleep that well so the heat is no different, I fall asleep between 1-2 and wake at 5 with a wake up in the middle somewhere.
Anyway all that to say, this weather when I’m at this stage of life is fine with me. Eating later on in the garden is lovely, there have been ‘summers’ in years gone by where we’ve barely managed to eat dinner twice outside!

27 degrees in the house at 8.30 last night after having windows and blinds shut most of the day.

Pabbel · 09/07/2026 07:22

Waiting for it to start here !!

Myblueclematis · 09/07/2026 07:28

I never thought I would hear myself say it but no rain is in the forecast until about the 15th and I am desperate for it to rain! 😆

I prayed we'd have a decent summer with good weather but I admit that this is awful, the heat has made me feel lethargic, my skin feels clammy and I only have two very small fans, the big one decided to die on me and everywhere is sold out to get a new one.

Surprisingly, I do sleep pretty ok in the heat but I do want it to end now, go down to around 22 deg. that's perfect as it's pleasantly warm but doesn't make you feel like a damp dish rag.

FWC2026 · 07/07/2026 22:28

My stroke is a lot more real than sun fairies. It's making me very unwell.

people can enjoy it. I'm glad some are! But the environment isn't & many of us with health conditions aren't, so hoping it lasts is just a shitty attitude.

It’s not shitty for those who like it. Why shouldn’t they express that they are enjoying it? I don’t like this heat at all, but I have no problem with others saying that they like it and want it to last. You may not agree, but it’s hardly a ‘shitty attitude’. That’s unfair.

GameOfJones · 09/07/2026 07:40

If it could be mid to high 20s instead of mid 30s I'd be happy. I actually love summer, it was 26/27c at the weekend where I am and I spent most of it sunbathing on my lounger. Give us weeks on end of 25c and that would please the sun lovers like me but be more bearable for everyone else.

But these constant days of extremely hot weather are taking it out of me. Our houses just aren't designed for it, DDs are fractious and it's a battle trying to keep them in the shade in the hottest part of the afternoons.

I got in my car at 6.30pm last night and the temperature was reading 41c on my driveway. It was like getting into a sauna.

Are you high? Wildfires are raging in France and Spain, it's the third heatwave in six weeks. Barcelona was over 40 degrees yesterday...34 expected in the UK today.
Even Ireland is in a heatwave with 30 degrees expected tomorrow.

Honestly some of you see clouds above your own house and can't see further.

Not the UK - parts of the UK. Early to mid twenties here in this part of the UK, so that poster is correct in asking where you are because it's not 'the' UK.

And my biggest fear is- snakes. Terrified of them.

Not sure you're aware, but all parts of the UK are in the UK, making my statement accurate.
The poster was very much incorrect in both the comments and the implication

No it's not - parts of the UK are experiencing a heatwave while other parts aren't. The UK as a whole is not - the clouds above many houses should make that clear, and those clouds don't mean the UK is experiencing early to mid twenties just as the UK isn't experiencing a heatwave.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/07/2026 08:18

Dd told me the other day that the weather forecast for the Northumberland coast area (we’re having a family week there at the beginning of the school hols) is 17 deg and drizzly. And I thought ‘Hooray!’

The rest of them inc. dh (I opted out) are heading for southern Spain 😱🥵 shortly afterwards. I’ll be hoping for rain here (scorching outer London) so at least I won’t need to water my poor parched garden.

I didn’t know that. Someone told me that a warming climate would mean we get more dangerous snake breeds in the wild. I’d be happy if that wasn’t true to be honest!

snakes might help keep the rodent populations down - rodents pose much more threat via disease to humans than snakes
