Oh my god the people who come on these threads and talk about what a wonderful time they’re having in their shady garden, and if their children get too hot they just lie on the tiled kitchen floor, and it’s alright as long as you don’t actually do anything.. do they not have the imagination to know that a lot of people have oven-like flats, lino in their even more oven-like kitchens and a lot of things they need to do? Like entertain a toddler without being able to leave the house after 10am because there’s nowhere shady to go? We thankfully have a portable AC but my elderly neighbours are really suffering, and they don’t have a lovely shady hammock to sip their g&t before padding barefoot back into their large tiled kitchens either. They’re working out if they can bear to get a lift to the nearby hotel to sit in the air conditioned lobby.

Marine wildlife is sensitive to warming waters. Seagrass meadows are already damaged by shipping and pollution and can’t cope with the warmer temperatures. Why should you care about a sea plant? Well it is the UK equivalent of coral reefs - providing an ecosystem to a vast number of species. It also protects our coastline from storm damage and is a carbon sink.

But out of sight (and it isn’t pretty like coral) so 🤷🏼‍♀️

This isn’t 1 good summer after many poor ones, this is an exceptionally hot summer after average-warm summers. Our expectation of what is hot has gone up.

Blue and white fishing boats lined up on the left of the picture with identifying codes on them. The sea is to the right and the sun is just rising. Sailing boats can be seen in the distance.

'Extreme' marine heatwave expected for parts of UK with risk to sea life

Scientists fear that high sea temperatures could have wide-ranging consequences for marine life.

frozendaisy · 09/07/2026 09:11

@BatildaB why don’t you ask your elderly neighbours over?

Your post is full of think of others but you will happily watch your neighbours suffer with your portable AC so it’s just the same as having a tiled kitchen floor. Or lend them your AC for a couple of hours?

frozendaisy · 09/07/2026 09:13

Our local fire brigade had double figures of fires to attend yesterday

who the idiot cracks on with a disposable bbq in a dry woodland?

It’s not shitty for those who like it. Why shouldn’t they express that they are enjoying it? I don’t like this heat at all, but I have no problem with others saying that they like it and want it to last. You may not agree, but it’s hardly a ‘shitty attitude’. That’s unfair.

Edited

As I said! I'm glad people are enjoying it. Might as well, if they can, while it's happening.

However, when it's causing so much environmental damage (wild fires) & causing a lot of people to be ill (not just not like it) & many to die I think it's a shitty attitude to hope it lasts.

im perfectly fine with you not agreeing with me, but there is NOTHING unfair about my opinion.

Britainisgreat · 09/07/2026 09:22

34c in London today.

COME ON NORWAY.

JudithsDead · 09/07/2026 09:25

But it’s the weather!! Hoping it lasts or hoping it doesn’t last has absolutely no impact on whether it lasts or not! It’s not shitty to
hope it lasts because the attitude of hoping it lasts will not actually impact anyone, its a little hope someone can have as an individual about what they personally prefer safe in the knowledge it actually won’t make a difference.
Don’t take peoples attitudes to WEATHER personally, it’s mad.

It’s summer! Yes it’s hotter than usual for early July but it’s supposed to be hot and sunny in summer. And there’s global warming so it’s not suprising. There’s lots that people can do to cool down. Sorry I just can’t join in with the wailing over this.

I wouldn't have been 'wailing'*before I had a stroke either. But many medical conditions make the higher temperatures not just 'uncomfortable/a bit hot' but bodies struggle to cope. Even if you try to keep cool if puts extra strain on your heart & other organs, that's why people end up in hospital & dying.

some people don't have an illness as such, but just can't cope with the heat, all our bodies are different.

i have been doing my best to stay cool, but I had to go to the hospital for an important outpatient appointment yesterday. I was not well by the time I got there. last heatwave I was able to reschedule some treatment, this appointment was unable be rescheduled.

*im not wailing at all but I would like the normal summer temperatures instead of the heatwaves.

try having a little empathy.

you too might feel the same one day. I had a stroke out of the blue, this is only one thing that has changed massively in my life. You aren't immune to a life changing event.

EDITED TO ADD: you could also stop opening threads about it.

CateyeKate · 09/07/2026 09:36

This year’s heatwave has killed off 4 of our aquarium fish, we’ve tried to keep the water at a constant temperature, changing water, using air con in the room etc but the heat keeps rising and killing them off. Just lost my favourite black moor, rip Bob.

Our houses are not designed for heatwaves, especially ours, it’s a 1960’s chalet bungalow with all the bedrooms in the bloody roof.

moggerhanger · 08/07/2026 19:38

This is the new normal. Get used to it.

Thanks. Your empathy is outstanding.

I'll do my best to get used to feeling very ill & on the verge of needing to be admitted to hospital. I'll tell my friend to get used to watching her 6 year old getting admitted to hospital again & again.

for many people it's not just 'a bit warm'
thats why people are dying.

I think it’s called Summer and perhaps as we’ve had many Summers with unseasonably cold temps and rain, we have all forgotten what it feels like- to have a Summer. Autumn will be along soon.

Yes, it's just sumner, that's why it's breaking all recorded temperatures🙄🙄🙄

FWC2026 · 09/07/2026 09:57

Gwenhwyfar · 08/07/2026 22:20

The heatwave in Europe was two weeks ago. It's finished now. What's the temperature where you are? Someone mentioned 22C outside. That's not a heatwave lol.

37° here yesterday

FWC2026 · 09/07/2026 10:00

PickAChew · 08/07/2026 22:26

Southern France and Northern Spain with their wildfires beg to differ.

Exactly!!

FWC2026 · 09/07/2026 10:05

frozendaisy · 09/07/2026 06:52

I don’t think that we will get predictable much anything going forward.

So no personally I think Autumn/Winters will be either wet, wet, wet and stormy, or deep freeze with hard icy travel conditions.

The days of skipping through crunchy copper leaves and glistening Jack Frost will be the exceptions in time.

I also think there will be a host of new insects we are unprepared for, including possibly the malaria fly and invasive species like the Asian hornet that can wipe out bees will arrive.

Climate change is ramping up, it’s only just getting started, this heatwave is just the beginning.

😢😢😢

I hate the heat. I have to work in a boiling hospital and commute on the tube. But I get why some enjoy the heat, sometimes people with joint pain, mood disorders etc notice an improvement. Why resent them? It’s not their fault.

Are you high? Wildfires are raging in France and Spain, it's the third heatwave in six weeks. Barcelona was over 40 degrees yesterday...34 expected in the UK today.
Even Ireland is in a heatwave with 30 degrees expected tomorrow.

Honestly some of you see clouds above your own house and can't see further.

Well said! 👏🏻

Yes it’s life threatening for some
But also this is as cool on average as it’s going to be during hotter years
There is a natural 7/8 cycle of El Niño and La Niña - and La Niña years will be cooler

If you look at the average temperature data with peaks and troughs - the indisputable pattern is an upwards trend.

A revolutionary change in how we live would work. But particularly in the UK, with our obsession of class and pecking order, everyone likes to know there are people below them, it will never be adapted here.

More people are going to die, could be me, you, my kids, could be anyone. The planet is just doing what the planet does, carbon dioxide traps the sun’s heat inside our atmosphere, we are essentially a tiny rock bobbing around in space with some intelligent life thrown in top. Our own actions are increasing the likelihood we make our planet uninhabitable for a number and certain vulnerable people.

This should have been our main priority for decades but it hasn’t been, in fact even now some people would rather shout “fake news” than change a tiny aspect of their individual lives.

It’s depressing. But not unexpected.

And get used to it might be the only advice out there. I have given up trying to engage in respectful debate and conversation with people around, I have found that shrugging and saying “it’s going to happen whether you believe it or not” much more effective.

And we here in the UK don’t have it THAT bad yet. We have clean cold water pipes into most buildings. Electricity. Medicines.

Blind optimism is possibly the best way forward.

It is no different to those who make posts about the relentless rain, cold and grey making them depressed, only to get posters talking about how much they love it.. cosy days, hot chocolate and board games - wearing a blanket, blah blah.

bookworm14 · 09/07/2026 11:24

I can’t believe people are still coming out with the ‘it’s just summer!!’ bullshit. Are they thick, disingenuous or both?

They shouldn't come on a thread like this though

That's like if someone posts about being unable to find work and gets a reply saying "well I've got a fantastic job and it's really secure and it's an amazing salary ha ha". That person is being incredibly rude and should just scroll on.

Exactly. Start a thread about the misery and dangers of winter and you will get lots of posters telling you how much they love snuggly blankets and hot choccy, and that it's all about having a positive mental attitude and seeing the best in every season.

Mingou · 09/07/2026 11:45

SirChenjins · 09/07/2026 08:16

No it's not - parts of the UK are experiencing a heatwave while other parts aren't. The UK as a whole is not - the clouds above many houses should make that clear, and those clouds don't mean the UK is experiencing early to mid twenties just as the UK isn't experiencing a heatwave.

Edited

Probably why I didn't say the whole of the UK was experiencing a heatwave.
Thanks for proving my point though

SirChenjins · 09/07/2026 11:50

The UK is not experiencing a heat wave - parts are.

The UK is not experiencing cloudy weather - parts are.

See how much clearer it is when you don't claim 'the UK' is experiencing a particular type of weather?

I was - clumsily - trying to flag up that it is how things are going to be, and we absolutely need to take steps to deal with it so that people don't become ill, our food supplies don't suffer and life as we have known it up to now doesn't disappear for good. It's an awful thing to contemplate and I am enraged by folk saying "ooh, it's just summer, I love the heat". NO. This is a risk to human life and yet governments and countries just carry on blithely.
