SH tenants having a gas safety check HAVE to have the heating switched on as part of the check. If you refuse you get the words "tenancy agreement" waved in your face.

cheezncrackers · 09/07/2026 18:42

Here in the home counties the end is not in sight. I just checked the forecast, which runs to next Weds. Heatwave still going on and 29 degrees. I love the summer, I love the sun, but this is too damn hot for the UK and our homes that are designed to hold heat, not keep it out! If this is going to be our climate in future we need to redesign our homes completely.

I kid you not, but during the infamous 76 heatwave , they had some people on tv doing a rain dance !
I remember it well. It seemed to work.

Can't think of a single good thing about it.

-Routine is completely out of the window.
-I'm barely sleeping and even when I do sleep i'm up at 4am to walk the dog (Yes she'll be fine for a day or two, but two + weeks feels unfair to keep her cooped up inside), it's still 30 degrees at 9pm.
-I wake up feeling hot and sticky
-We have a portable AC unit in the bedroom that's fighting for it's absolute life. It's struggling to get the room down below 22
-Everytime I step outside I just seem to be eaten alive so my legs are covered in itchy, painful bites
-My depression is so bad, Very much makes me think what on earth is the point of life if you're just trapped inside for months on end because it's too hot and exhausting to live?
-I've barely done any work for about a week, my brain is just too hot and fried to concentrate..or care.
-I'm dripping in sweat the minute I step outside.
-Have no motivation to get to the gym, yes it's airconned but the car isn't so by the time i've sat in our oven on wheels (even for 5 minutes) i'm completely demotivated and just feel sluggish.

Fans are blowing hot air around (And we have decent ones ), I'm grumpy and irritable. Your body retains water so I just feel all puffy and horrible. I was really hopeful this year after spending the last few weeks chronically obese. Turns out losing half your body weight means nothing. Healthy weight and suffering just as much.

I'm sorry to hear that things are so difficult for you.

Are you getting any support for your mental health? Could you self refer to your local talking therapies if not?

Are you of an age where HRT might be needed? Peri can play havoc with temperature regulation and mood.

Try smudge for the biting insects. It works wonders. Used in Scotland against the midge but works on all biting insects, no DEET and reasonably priced.

I am in the same boat with my dog, but does it have to be walked at 4am? It's still cool enough at 5am or 6am. I literally just through on some shorts and a vest and go out then shower when I get home. I eat my breakfast once the laptop is on. An extra hour or two sleep in the morning will help with tiredness and mood.

Just a few small suggestions, which won't magically fix everything, but will hopefully make things slightly more bearable

OMG. Where are you?

Where i am in the South East it's 23c at 5am. That's a normal summer daytime temperature and one in usual summers people are happy with. The fridges and freezers in the supermarkets are struggling, Sainsbury's had blinds down on the fridges the other week.

It has consistently been very high 20s and to mid 30s in the South East since May Bank Holiday. We keep missing the thunderstorms and rain that keep getting promised. Our last lot of rain measured 1.35mm about 2/3 weeks ago.

On the plus side when this summer ends hopefully there'll be an epic storm to finish it off.

estrogone · 10/07/2026 06:39

Heatwave are great. If you have air-conditioning and a house that is built for it and a swimming pool in the back yard (basically if you live in Australia).

I hate feeling hot and sweaty with no escape - its hideous, so completely understand those who are really struggling. Its just no fun.

Bryonyberries · 10/07/2026 06:50

In my area it looks like rain next weekend and temps dropping to 19/20 - never fails to end at school holidays lol.

LonelyInPitOfStomach · 10/07/2026 06:59

I am refusing to get upset about this weather. I lived overseas for 18 years in hot countries and I am glad that we are no longer the - miserable country that has a couple of sunny days in the summer, and the rest of it pissing down - that I grew up in.

Yes, we need to adapt to it and make adjustments to our houses and lives, but I have told myself to enjoy it whilst it lasts, because it won't. The other day it dropped to about 24 and there was a little breeze and I felt like I was back in Spain or Greece where I lived in my 20's and it was just lovely.

DH and I have bought a couple of gorgeous deckchairs and we have sat out in the sun every evening after work, or for a couple of hours late afternoon at the weekend, reading and chilling and it is the happiest I have felt for a long time. I feel like I am on holiday.

Thank you❤

I've tried the mental health support before, NHS has really long waiting lists, private therapy does't really seem to work. Doctors just want to put you on antidepressants which i've tried most of them over the years and nothing works.

I'm 28 so think a bit too early for peri but i'll look into it.

We live out in the countryside so unless we drive somewhere it's all just open fields. Even at 6am today it was 24. We try not to take her out over 20 (unless we're going to a shaded area or a lake) as she's big, black and double coated. I took her at 5am yesterday and by 6:15 she was starting to struggle, had to keep stopping for water breaks and lying down. She's usually fine to go for two hours but even an under an hour and a half seemed too much

Same. It’s so nice being able to make plans to meet in parks, have friends round for BBQ’s, pack lightly for little weekends away and days out, knowing it’s going to be warm and sunny and no rain. Sitting in the garden late in the evening is glorious.

Long may it continue.

My prediction is around 20th July when most schools will have broken up for the summer!

This is our second week of six weeks summer holiday already. Too hot.

Long may it continue while Europe is burning and people are dying is a particular form of insular assholery.

Let's forget crops and livestock that need rain to survive shall we! As long as you can sit in your garden having a bbq.

But remember those same crops and animals give you your food for your bbq so don't complain when prices go up and quality goes down as it will be imported from countries who don't have the same high standards as we do or when shelves are empty.

Honestly why are some people so blinded by the realities of a heatwave and can't see beyond their own small world.

I've got to change the bed when I finish my coffee, the very thought of heaving the quilt around makes me feel really faint.

Can't wait for cooler air and rain! ☂

Seems every day when I get up and check the weather on my phone, they add another day or two of heatwave to it.
It now says it’s not cooling till Friday. Am sure that was saying Wednesday just yesterday…

Don't use your quilt! It is far too hot - just put the duvet covet on the bed!

I bet you'd jump on a thread and admonish someone for complaining that their foot had fallen off because other people don't have legs, you know.

Yeah!!

it's irrelevant how hot it is in Spain to my body not coping with the 37° it was here yesterday. It's irrelevant that I'd already be jn hospital if I was in Spain because I'm NOT in Spain. I wasn't stupid enough to book a holiday jn Spain when the temperatures are usually hotter there.

Don't get me wrong, I really feel for the people in Spain who aren't coping ok with the heat ❤️ but a poster saying 'it's not a problem here because it's hotter in Spain' is ridiculous.

not to mention I lived in Valencia for a while & in the South of France & It's a different feel at 35° than it is in the UK.
