Very nice of you and whoever else suggested similar. Plenty of decent people (including children) live here. So you can fuck off with this hatred! Shame on you!

It’s my thought experiment and in it the people get to leave first.

And I’m sorry that my words hurt you. If it is any consolation I was hurt with a lot more than words, by a ridiculous number of your townsfolk. Or potentially former townsfolk. Hopefully many are now enjoying an eternal barbecue in The Great Downstairs. While there were/are probably lots of decent people, there were seriously outnumbered and no fucker, in any uniform, was willing or able to lift a finger to help me.

I have lived all over the world, experienced as a result coups, dictators, radical social injustice, natural disasters and massive insects.

But only one place remains in my head as the worst place on this planet.

And it’s Luton.

I wouldn’t gift my worst enemy an overnight stay in the place.

It's a joke based on a famous poem. Do you think that the mums on mumsnet are actual terrorists planning and preparing to bomb Luton because it doesn't have a Gail's

The lack of a Gail's is probably the best thing about Luton, after frequent trains to make it easy to leave. I have checked via their website.

Quick question OP, if your concert is at Knebworth Park why on earth did you choose to stay in Luton - they aren’t particularly close to each other (35ish minutes) you can’t get the train from Luton to Knebworth / Stevenage either and a taxi won’t be cheap. You would have been better staying in Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Letchworth or Hitchin - all much nicer than Luton too - would it be possible for you to swap locations?

Hi, I tried to book in knebworth but most places were booked up by that point and the ones that were available were asking for funny money for just a few days. Not knowing the area (im in Scotland) I just googled from nearest train point and got luton. So luton it is. Its only a place to lay my head really.

If you go to Harpenden and fancy a treat, the Silver Cup has really excellent food and although there's less to do than St A the train station is quite a bit closer to the town centre. The Silver Cup is on the common for a walk afterwards.

My children on the other hand would massively recommend Hong Buffet all you can eat Chinese in Luton.

There is a medieval castle at Berkhamstead. That might be a bit far from Luton. Also, Hemel Hempstead and Boxmoor with its stripey cows. Hemel is a bit chavvy, but not as chavvy as Luton.

Luton is a miserable hell hole.

Theres a reason lots of episodes of 24 hours in police custody are based there.

Is that a Paul Young reference, who grew up
in Luton?

TeaIsLovely · 05/07/2026 16:13

Get train down to Harpenden or St Albans. Other than that - run.

Marmalademorning · 05/07/2026 16:22

Glittertwins · 04/07/2026 07:44

Get the train to St Albans, it’s not far. Lots of nice shops, restaurants, bars. Luton is not a great place.

Agreed. I went to uni there (not sure it even still is a uni). My boyfriend’s mum tried to warn me that it’s a shit hole and I didn’t listen to her at the time unfortunately. It was the most miserable couple of years of my life and I still remember how liberated I felt when I left there for the last time.

elastamum · 05/07/2026 16:26

Have a day out in st Albans. Very easy to get the train from Luton. Visit the waffle House for waffles, the Roman museum in the park, the cathedral and mooch round the shops in the town centre. It's lovely.

Glittertwins · 05/07/2026 17:13

I haven’t been to the Waffle House for ages. Keep not getting around to it!

I doubt hell is as bad.

Hope OP if you go to Knebworth for an event in future, you can find accommodation in a better place.
