They have got Eric Morecambe's glasses in St Albans museum.

How far is st Albans from where we are staying? Xx

Harpenden is about five miles away from Luton, and St Albans a further five miles the other side of Harpenden.

Quick question OP, if your concert is at Knebworth Park why on earth did you choose to stay in Luton - they aren’t particularly close to each other (35ish minutes) you can’t get the train from Luton to Knebworth / Stevenage either and a taxi won’t be cheap. You would have been better staying in Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Letchworth or Hitchin - all much nicer than Luton too - would it be possible for you to swap locations?

RollonSpringplease · 04/07/2026 13:59

I used to live there. I enjoyed watching the rats running down the road and counting the pools of blood in the high street after Friday night rampages.

I would do London on the Sunday and St Albans on the Monday. I think shops will be closed in SA on Sunday but more open in London. SA has nice cathedral I seem to remember. Luton really is that dire...

The shrine to St Alban is in St Albans Cathedral.

@Flannelfeet I live here because of the green areas (not because of the town, I do avoid it)and someone already mentioned the Sropsley to Barton walk which is lovely. I’m fussy around food and don’t eat in Luton, there’s not a great variety, no good quality/atmosphere and most meat is halal which I try to avoid.

I agree with the suggestions, St Albans or Harpenden (slightly closer) also has a big park and some ok resturants/pubs, better for aSunday.

Lolll so you took massive offence to people (obviously) joking about flattening Luton, but when asked for suggestions of what to do, you said you don't go to the town centre and try to avoid it

But it’s apparently worth bombing, according to a poster or two.

It's a joke based on a famous poem. Do you think that the mums on mumsnet are actual terrorists planning and preparing to bomb Luton because it doesn't have a Gail's

Thank you very much, I will definitely put Harpenden on the list to visit. Are shops open on Sundays in Harpenden? Thinking we could have a wee nose round there and a pub lunch that day.

A lot of them shut on a Sunday. St A is just a stop furrher on the train from Harpenden.

OutOfApricots · 04/07/2026 14:16

Stockwood Park is close to that hotel and you could spend a while there. At the moment I believe they have an exhibition celebrating Vauxhall vehicles, manufactured in the town until very recently. They also have the Mossman Collection of historic horse-drawn carriages. Nice cafe and small but pleasant gift shop. Entry is free or you can give a donation.

You could get the train north to Bedford or south to St Albans.

Angelbunny · 04/07/2026 14:18

I grew up in Luton and now live in a village close by. I absolutely would change your booking to somewhere else. It is honestly the worst place I have ever been. I will not take my children there at all and just no way I would ever go there again out of choice. The town centre is vile, so unsafe and just full of addicts and drunks. There is nothing there to enjoy.

I see nothing wrong with that. The town centre is crap, nothing to see but there are areas further out that are nice. The ones I’ve also written about.

You told someone to "fuck off" for joking about Luton being crap. But then you admitted it's crap, it has crap restaurants, and the best thing to do there is to leave Luton centre 😂
Glad you see nothing wrong with that though

Pretty much all of the shops are open in Harpenden and St Albans on a Sunday. There is definitely no shortage of places to eat or parks to wander about.

Harpenden has its annual Highland Gathering on Sunday 12th July which is usually good fun.

The film ‘Blinded by the light’ is set in Luton in the 80s and I thought was a good representation of Luton at the time, and a good film.

Used to love the Harpenden carnival, and all the carnival floats and the arena and stalls in the park. Is that still held?

Yes it still happens - it was last week, though it's held on the common now, rather than the park.

HurdyGurdy19 · 04/07/2026 15:31

I live very close to Luton, but I never go into the town centre/shopping centre.

They (the Council, I suppose) is trying to make it nicer, but they're honestly flogging a dead horse. I never feel safe there - it has an unpleasant atmosphere.

The last time I ate in Luton was a few years ago, and we were at Mona Lisa, in the town centre, near the Hat Factory. It was a lovely little Italian place, but Ive no idea if it is still there.

Otherwise, I'd echo other posters, and suggest Dunstable Downs for nice walks/views/glider watching, Whipsnade Zoo to see the new tiny baby elephant and new baby cheetah cubs, or travel further out to St Albans (imo, nicer than Harpenden) or into London.

Enjoy the . . . What do they call them now? Gig? Concert? Show?. Whatever - have a great time.

Yamyamabroad · 04/07/2026 15:45

Luton shopping mall is the only place I have ever felt the urge to clutch my bag to my chest as I scurried through. Despite living for 18 years in less salubrious parts of Haringey. Its even worse since Vauxhall closed down.

If you are thinking of a day trip, there is a lot more to see in St Albans rather than Harpenden, especially on a Sunday.

nowhere Has closed shops on a Sunday unless it’s a little village. St alban is completely open

Oh come on, it can't be that bad. I firmly believe that it's possible to have a couple of days wandering around any city having a good time seeing nice and interesting things and have done this in places that are widely derided including Hull and Birmingham, both of which have many nice parts.

In Luton, I can see some nice looking big parks and museums/galleries on Google maps, so that would be fine. Plus a variety of restaurants as well as travel to other places nearby.

Or London is only half an hour on the train so go there if you don't normally get the chance to without booking months in advance so tickets are reasonable.

Clearly never been there!
