No one’s suggesting nice people don’t live in Luton! But the schools are irrelevant to someone who’s just visiting for the weekend, and so, almost certainly, is whether they coincide with an event at the Hat Factory. For a weekend where you want to do enjoyable tourist things, having travelled to do so, it is a dead loss.

It's the lazy stereotyping I'm objecting to.

And the 'jokes' about bombing us, which I've reported

Rozendantz · 04/07/2026 11:44

Another one here saying there are nice small towns or villages near Luton, but Luton itself is truly grim. I spent 2 years working there on a contract, and it genuinely was a horrible place to be - and definitely not somewhere you could spend a couple of days wondering around!

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 04/07/2026 11:56

Avoid Leighton Buzzard as well if you can, that's pretty grim too.

Very nice of you and whoever else suggested similar. Plenty of decent people (including children) live here. So you can fuck off with this hatred! Shame on you!

I agree that there are decent people there, doesn't make the town worth visiting.

unless you like narrow gauge trains.

Luton town centre is awful and there is nothing for tourists it is true but you haven’t booked an air bnb for a week to explore it, it is serving a purpose and can do that perfectly well.

You are staying right next to Luton Hoo and Stockwood Park which are lovely and a short uber ride away from plenty of lovely pubs and shops in Harpenden and surrounding villages.

It is a perfectly fine option to spend a weekend for your purposes, you have booked an out of town hotel as accommodation for a concert and there is more than enough walking, sunbathing (if weather continues as expected), eating, drinking or mooching on the couple of options I have suggested above to fill the time you need to around it pleasantly.

Make the best of the good parts around you, like the hundreds of thousands of normal people who live there and ignore the town centre if you choose, it is grim it’s true but there is no need to spend any time there.

Don’t be put off by people who have the privilege of not being born into an area like Luton and in my experience, are deeply uncomfortable when they see any deprivation therefore are fearful of it and this projects as judgment but in reality they know nothing about the wider town or community.

You’ll have a great time if you make a plan with the many good suggestions given and reserve your judgement.

Please come back and let us know how you get on :)

@Flannelfeet I live here because of the green areas (not because of the town, I do avoid it)and someone already mentioned the Sropsley to Barton walk which is lovely. I’m fussy around food and don’t eat in Luton, there’s not a great variety, no good quality/atmosphere and most meat is halal which I try to avoid.

I agree with the suggestions, St Albans or Harpenden (slightly closer) also has a big park and some ok resturants/pubs, better for aSunday.

But it’s apparently worth bombing, according to a poster or two.

Spargaszezon · 04/07/2026 12:21

The Luton Hoo is nice (and the spa/restaurant as well) but currently closed for redevelopment.

newtothisgreenstuff · 04/07/2026 12:22

Oh and you might enjoy a night down The Castle, friendly rock pub in town. Might be good for a few pints on the Sunday, you can walk down to it from The Linton.

I haven’t been but Kanzi’s have good reviews for Turkish food. There is usually good food to be found, it won’t be fine dining but if you like Turkish, Greek or Indian you will find something decent for sure if you do spend some time in the town.

Oh I didn’t know this thanks for sharing

In the unlikely event that England beat Mexico, you could find a lovely pub to watch their next match and meet some of the lovely locals.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 04/07/2026 12:53

There is a World War 2 bomber in the air right now. Don't be alarmed. It's headed for Chartridge not Luton.

It has nothing to do with poverty. Where I grew up (not UK) is considerably poorer than Luton, and I'm perfectly familiar with serious deprivation. Would I want to go and visit somewhere almost equally poor? No.

How far is st Albans from where we are staying? Xx

Luton is a hole. I would change your booking and go elsewhere.

Thank you very much, I will definitely put Harpenden on the list to visit. Are shops open on Sundays in Harpenden? Thinking we could have a wee nose round there and a pub lunch that day.

No, it's worse.

Even in the 1970s/80s its returned an MP who openly supported apartheid. It is also the birthplace of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Indeed, which is why he is so vocal about Rape gangs. Luton is a shithole. 321 bus will also take you to watford if you like harry potter and can get tickets.

Oh that sounds alright...if my head can take it after listening to iron maiden the night before 😆 🤯

I’d rather spend a month in Hull, six months in Slough than a day trapped in Luton town centre

it’s really really shit 💩

Bunnyfuller1 · 04/07/2026 13:38

Luton is sadly dire. Very economically deprived, town centre has barely anything other than street drinkers and drug dealers. Huge gang problems as well as county lines and CSE.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 04/07/2026 13:44

Still 400 grand for a semi, though.

Well it is handy for the M1, Luton Airport and the train line...if you want to get out quick.
