Go to the airport and watch planes take off and land?

I wouldn't do that, some are Ryanair and Mr O'Leary would probably charge you for watching them.

Get the hell out of Luton, by any means possible.

Seconded

Is it that bad? 😆 🤣

No, it's worse.

Even in the 1970s/80s its returned an MP who openly supported apartheid. It is also the birthplace of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

In the thought experiment “If you had to sacrifice a British city to a flattening bomb, which would you pick?” … Luton, without a seconds hesitation.

Possibly rethink where you’re staying - sorry but we live about 10 miles away and it’s most definitely to be avoided.

There are lots of lovely surrounding areas where you’ll have a much more pleasant time, as PP have suggested.

Luton is unfortunately awful. The town centre is grim. If you can change your hotel, do so. St Albans is close by and much much nicer. Do not underestimate how terrible Luton is.

Jeez, is it that bad? We tried to get closer to Knebworth but there wasnt much available and we booked in January.

I can assure you that Luton is to Hull and Birmingham (both, I agree, interesting cities worth visiting) as a stale vending machine snack is to a Michelin-starred meal. It is a place people live. The OP should either switch hotels or, if not, get out of Luton every day and just sleep at the hotel.

Yes, the hotel is pretty much just a bed for us. We want to be out and about.

St Albans - abbey, Verulanium park. Roman remains, market (twice weekly)

Woburn - pretty village, nice walks around Woburn estate, deer park etc

Dunstable Downs

Rushmere country park

Milton Keynes - large shopping centre,

Tring - fascinating small museum, nice canal walks

Harpenden - small town, nice park, drive around West common to look at the lovely large houses

Edited

We have been to milton keynes the past 2 years for bludfest, we really liked it there actually but it was bloody hot 🥵

Very nice of you and whoever else suggested similar. Plenty of decent people (including children) live here. So you can fuck off with this hatred! Shame on you!

Luton topped the list of UK 50 crap towns in 2004.

Surely after all those years they have made it better?

Seconded. Luton has its problems like many large towns these days but we're all sick of this sort of rhetoric. Many many good people, excellent schools, thriving cultural scene and plenty of improvements going on.

And then charge you extra for carrying your handbag.

Or the "Cats" Luton Airport no 22 in the charts 1979.

Hi OP. Live in the Knebworth area. Suggestions for local vs going into London as other PP have suggested.

Hermit of Redcoats pub (Little Wymondley) is fab for food and country vibes.

Misya on Stevenage High Street is excellent (Turkish) & there's a great Tapas restaurant as well. If you like Iron Maiden, The Red Lion on the High Street is also good! Lots of people going to the concert will likely be at this pub.

Hitchin is great, market town with lots of independent shops, cafes etc.

Lannock Farm in Weston.

There's a few public walks around Knebworth and Stevenage if you want to have a country walk. Believe there's an app with routes etc.

London is fine as a suggestion but I'm sure there's plenty to do in and around the area. Keep in mind the trains are going to be heaving, they always are when something is on at Knebworth. Advise you check as well re engineering works which are frequent over the weekend. Have fun, will be listening from the confines of my garden!! 🤘

No one’s suggesting nice people don’t live in Luton! But the schools are irrelevant to someone who’s just visiting for the weekend, and so, almost certainly, is whether they coincide with an event at the Hat Factory. For a weekend where you want to do enjoyable tourist things, having travelled to do so, it is a dead loss.
