Do people have purses any more? Why?

My purse used to be massively important. My cash and cards. Wouldn’t leave the house without it. I can remember the purse my mum had for years. Fat brown leather thing with a snap closure. Full of old vouchers and stamps and things.
I have had many purses in my life but now just have a phone and a single card. A few notes and coins in a bag I use sometimes. I have three adult children and none of them have a wallet or purse.
I do see people at the checkout putting their stuff away in purses sometimes though. Seems so retro!
I think if I had a purse I would carry around loads of stuff I don’t need. Just musing on one of the things that’s changed in my life as a middle aged woman!
So. If you still use a purse. Why?

I have one, mainly stays at home. Has my driving license and plastic bank cards in.

i usually only go out with my phone with all Apple Pay and maybe a £10 note

Archymum · 02/07/2026 20:20

No purse but I do have a card holder. Sometimes payment fails on my phone so I usually carry a card or two as a back up. It also holds things like my library card and driver's license.

Honeyhonayboo · 02/07/2026 20:21

I don’t think most people have the huge thick purses that were popular decades ago.
I’ve only ever carried a card wallet since I was 18. I have no need for anything else.

Yes! I love my Radley purse, dh bought it a Christmas present 10 years ago, it still looks great. It’s got my cards, driving licence etc.. but also stamps, little photos of my kids, and some pound coins because you never know!

MidnightPatrol · 02/07/2026 20:21

I exclusively use Apple Pay on my phone when out and about!

I keep a small cardholder with my actually cards in it, at home. I rarely take it out.

I only use cash to pay for beauty treatments, where it seems preferred. But even there they seem
pre open minded to card payments these days.

StrugglingTeenager · 02/07/2026 20:22

I still use a purse because I always have and have never found out how to use my phone for payments. I rarely shop though.

TofuTuesday · 02/07/2026 20:22

I do, it’s a slim zip up with a health alert card, driving licence and bank card (some places and pay at pump don’t take phone pay).

RichardMarxisinnocent · 02/07/2026 20:22

I carry a purse. It generally contains a debit card (for most payments) and credit card (sometimes used to buy things online at work during lunch), and my driving licence (so I am in the habit of having it with me and won't forget it on those occasions I need it as ID). I also have a bit of cash in there just in case of an issue with card payments.

lmnabc · 02/07/2026 20:24

Absolutely I do but it’s a larger one than in years gone by to hold cash (yes, cash/change!) and card wallet

hugoagogo · 02/07/2026 20:24

I have a purse and use if every day to keep my cards and a bit of cash for the local chip shop where they really prefer cash or for emergency purposes.
I would hate to have cash loose in my bag or pocket and I don't use banking apps.

OttersOnAPlane · 02/07/2026 20:24

I have one for the bank cards, membership cards, stamps, locker token, emergency meds (one of each plus two painkillers, in case I'm out longer than I expect)

I also have a lip balm, cotton carrier bag and mini pack of tissues in the pocket of each of my coats or jackets.

JohnBullshit · 02/07/2026 20:24

It has cards and money in it, same as it always did. I still come across times where only cash will do.

DappledThings · 02/07/2026 20:24

Yep. I have multiple membership cards for me and DC plus library cards and loads of cafe loyalty cards. Plus stamps, choice of bank cards. I use my phone too but still carry a purse if going anywhere other than just popping out.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 02/07/2026 20:25

Yes I have a purse, to carry cards and emergency cash. I don't have any way to pay on my phone because it's so old and there's no room on it for more apps.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 02/07/2026 20:26

I have a little card holder thing.

I get ID’d sometimes (very rarely!), so have my driving licence, our Sainsbury’s has dreadful signal so I have my nectar card as the app never loads in the shop, and then my debit cards as it seems the best place to keep them.

Icanseeasquirrel · 02/07/2026 20:26

OK maybe my family and friends and I are outliers then. Just not seen anyone I know using a purse in forever.
I love being able to fly out the door with just my phone and a key.

My purse is like a survival pack
Wallet and all its bits
First aid stuff
Mini sewing kit
Snacks
Water bottle
Sunglasses
Wet wipes
Anti bac gel
Pen and paper
Flashlight
Latex gloves

I'm ever ready

RaraRachael · 02/07/2026 20:27

I have a purse with some cash and all my cards in it.
I've no idea how to, or wish to pay for stuff with my phone.

Ted27 · 02/07/2026 20:27

Some people still use cash, plus I have all the following cards

work Id
Gym club
2 loyalty stamp cards for local independent shops,
Library cars
Local discount card for museums, events etc
Boots card
Waterstones card
A blue light card
Usually a couple of gift cards

Plus stamps, a few receipts

Danikm151 · 02/07/2026 20:27

Yep I have a purse. It’s got cards and cash. I always carry cash and prefer it as I can budget easier if i can see how much there is rather than just numbers on a screen.

Icanseeasquirrel · 02/07/2026 20:28

But I accept that if my phone gets snatched I am helpless! I don’t even know anyone’s number..

I have a purse which usually hold £5 - £25 in . I also use a credit card and actually put the card into the machine and tap out the security card rather than just tap the card .
I enjoy being old school .

Ted27 · 02/07/2026 20:31

My key ring has 2 front door keys, key to the allotments, key to the allotment toilets, keys to the padlocks on my sheds, one at home and one on the allotment
Plus a random key I confess have no idea what for

DandelionClockSeeds · 02/07/2026 20:32

Yep.
Cash (needed for kids activities), driving license, loyalty cards, debit card, credit cards, stamps. Last few receipts ive had from the shops.

I don't use my phone for loyalty cards or payments.
