A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

Havoc; how do you steam an egg? Is that what we call poached eggs?

No, start as if frying then pour a bit of very cold water in the pan and pop the lid on. It's super quick. 🙂

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/09/2026 02:02

Penguins, we did make it to the Richmond night market on Saturday evening and had a really good time. The kids played with other kids in an area beside some picnic tables, so that was nice and they burned off a lot of energy. 😅
Today we made it out to Science World for a couple of hours.
I've just made pasta in a tomato cream sauce with chicken; and asparagus on the side.
I've just let Havoc get a knife to use for cutting the asparagus. 🙈

Thanks. Do you start with oil, or a dry pan? I do put a lid on when frying eggs, but I never thought of adding wayet.

Well, the new week has dawned, and instead of a pleasant slide into the cooler weather of early autumn we have the hottest temperatures of the summer accompanied by stifling humidity. I brought a spare top with me to work and changed into it when I arrived, as I was a sweaty mess. I'll have to do the same tomorrow.

DD and I shared a very spicy Chinese chicken dish that DD ordered. I think I'll cook tomorrow's dinner in the air fryer. We have potatoes, and some smoked sausage in the freezer, plus corn on the cob.

They've begun paving the street at the bottom of my alley. Work begins around 7am daily.

Oil, yes. I use evoo for all cooking and use a teflon pan. Let me know how it goes! 🙂

Math, it's been cool and rainy here on the East Coast. We only had one good pool day last week. It's been such a wet summer, too. At least the forecast for Labor Day weekend looks good.

I had a follow-up appointment with my new gastroenterologist on Monday. The new medication is working really well, much better than the med I was on previously, so we mostly talked about that. I have a few injectors for the old med, and I asked him if I should just discard them in my sharps container. It turns out that he volunteers at a clinic for people who lack insurance, and if I give them to him, he can give them to one of his uninsured patients. So the next time I'm in his area, I'll drop them off with his nurse.

Havoc, I love a fried egg, so I'll have to try your steamed egg recipe. I take it you don't need to flip them to fully cook the whites. I've been using avocado oil and a non-stick pan. The avocado oil is nice as I can get it in a spray can at the warehouse club, and the spray puts down a very fine mist.

No turkey sightings recently, but the cats and I remain vigilant.

OP posts:
Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/09/2026 19:36

Miss, no don't flip.

Math, your dinner sounds good. I don't think I could handle the spice , though. The weather sounds oppressive.

I'm having toast with peanut butter, fresh figs and a clementine for my late breakfast. I've also got an iced latte.

It's cloudy, breezy and 18c. Rain is in the forecast for this afternoon. It feels very cool after having weather mid-high 20's most of the last two months with lots of days well over 30c.

MrsSPenguinz · 04/09/2026 18:47

Home baked cookies sounds lovely @Mumtobabyhavoc and glad you made it to Richmond Park.

Glad the meds are working well @MissConductUS

DH and I fixed the lights in the kitchen which were flickering and replaced the spotlights. We also have removed the lino in the small room, painted it once and added filler and thrown out the lino. I cleaned the kitchen and the floors. Now about to have a Chinese takeaway. Had plumber round for a quote and getting electrician round for a quote as we will need new plumbing and electrics for moving washing machine and drier and adding a wash basin.

We went to a spa day the day before yesterday and had a lovely day with swimming, 2 classes, a facial for DH, hands for me including hot stones, outdoor spa and indoor spa and roast dinner and dessert for lunch. I have ordered some bulbs as it will be time to plant bulbs soon.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/09/2026 20:33

Penguins, you are getting so much work done around your house! 🙌🥳

Nothing much going on here. Painted a bit of the kitchen then mopped the floors and towel-dried them last night after the kids went to bed. Have got my mum's 2nd IV going ahead of getting everyone rounded up to go to my mum's med appt soon. Kids have watched a YT vid, Greetings in French, have had a snack and are now playing school bus where Baby sits in the toy basket (a large canvas bin) and Havoc pulls Baby across the floor. It's now a train, Choo-choo! 🤷‍♀️🤣

MrsSPenguinz · 04/09/2026 20:52

That's a lot of looking after people you have on @Mumtobabyhavoc you are a lovely daughter and Mum to your little ones.

bizzey · 04/09/2026 21:50

@Mumtobabyhavoc ..it seems so strange when you talk about Richmond Park ...as I live only 10 mins away from my one as well !

Had a painful day today .
Pain in the buttox area !!
Mam had hospital appointment for her eye.
Normally her appointments are about 1pm but today it was 2pm.
And the clinic was so , so , so slow.
We got out at nearly 5 pm !
My poor bum was so sore from sitting on the chair !

I had prepared my back by rubbing some Voltarol in it ...but hadn't prepped my coxyc!!😁😁.

We got home at 6.30 which seemed so late, but that could be just because of the different time appointment.

I am actually tempted to buy myself a sort of cushion to take with me to sit on !

The bus is an hour to start with , and then 2 plus hours just sitting in waiting area ...and then an hour and 15/30 for bus home as we hit traffic !

sproutsandparsnips · 04/09/2026 23:41

@bizzeyyikes that’s a lot of sitting! I find as I get older just sitting and standing still makes my back hurt more.
@mathanxietythat is frustrating - I’m happy it’s cooler here. I had to put a coat on this evening!
@Mumtobabyhavoclovely to see your pics again - you always have a good time out!
@MrsSPenguinzthat sounds amazing and so relaxing!
glad to have had some rain here. Tomorrow is first game of season. DS’s team is playing away but I have to stay home to cook for our seniors in first game which is a local derby. DH is planning chicken kebab with salad. I am not so convinced as have to cook burgers to sell alongside and DH is overreaching a little but it will use up some stuff from the freezer.

mathanxiety · 06/09/2026 04:54

Finally a break in the horribly hot weather, just in time for me to come down with a disgusting bug - sinus congestion and pain, sore throat, chesty cough, and a fever that won't give up. I started to feel a little better this evening and managed to have a shower, so I'm feeling a little more human again.

MissConductUS · 06/09/2026 19:21

Bizzey, I have a memory foam cushion for driving that keeps the pressure off my coccyx with a cutout for it. You can buy them on Amazon. That was a very long day for a clinic appointment.

Havoc, the train play is adorable. Mine used to do the same thing with a toy car.

Math, sorry you're poorly. It sounds a bit like the flu. I'm waiting for my pharmacy to get the Moderna mRNA flu vaccine that was just approved. It should be a much better match for the strains that are currently circulating than the traditional ones they have to start nine months in advance.

It was a lovely late summer day here, so DH, DS, and I drove north to a very quaint river town called Beacon that has a big farmer's market every Sunday. We got quite a haul - lettuce, tomatoes, raspberries, sourdough bread, raspberry Rugelach and some artisan cat treats. We got there early, had breakfast at a diner, and walked around the town before going to the market.

@MissConductUSthat sounds like a lovely day. We don’t seem to have anything like that round here - went for a walk along the canal today and spotted two shopping trolleys and several beer cans in it. When we were away over the summer in France and Italy I so much enjoyed looking round the local markets which had such lovely produce.
DS’s team had first league game yesterday - a loss but a competitive game which is a big improvement.

@sproutsandparsnips, what is in those wooden bowls on the table? I can't quite read the signs stuck in them.

OP posts:
HildaTablet · 07/09/2026 13:01

@sproutsandparsnips we’re lucky, I think - we have a market here that has that kind of stall - big bowls of olives, tapenade, peppers etc. It’s on Saturdays (big) and Wednesdays (smaller).

I spent my weekend hacking down a very overgrown elder tree, more of a muti-stemmed bush really, which has merged with the foliage next to it and doesn’t let any light through any more. It’s now miraculously open and things can breathe much better, but on the downside I have a huge pile of branches and leaves to process, and both green garden bins are full….

MrsSPenguinz · 07/09/2026 13:15

Thanks @sproutsandparsnips Glad DSs team had a good game.

Sorry you are ill @mathanxiety hope you feel better soon.

Nice to get things from farmers market @MissConductUS We have them here and also have a farm here but this year the farm has been badly hit by the lack of rain and lost their crops.

Well done on the gardening @HildaTablet Hope it won't be too long for bins to be emptied.

Cleaned DSs bathroom and the floors and had electrician round to quote for work in new laundry room and bathroom where later we were planning to add a bath. He was lovely but pointed out we have a socket for the bathroom boiler so either will need to change electrics to it or move it to laundry room so need to investigate that further. I wanted to add a sink to new laundry room and this complicates things but need a plumber to say what will and won't work.

Bulbs are due to arrive and then if they arrive not too late will go out gardening. DH has his piano lesson restarting today.

bizzey · 07/09/2026 23:00

Going uptown on the tube today ...and spotted this little fare dodger !!

Too tired to post more pictures yesterday.
We went to Buckingham Palace and went on the State Room tour.
We were not allowed to take photos inside ...and they were definitely more stricter than at Windsor Castle !!

It really was an amazing trip.
Some was boarded up/out of bounds as they are still doing the renovations to the Palace.

Once we got outside to the garden we could take photos.
So the photos (when they appear !) are of the outside back area of the Palace and the Garden .
The stairs are where the royals stand for the NA before going down to greet people for the Garden Parties .

Forgot to say .
The markings in the grass would be where the marques would have been placed.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/09/2026 01:55

Bizzey, looks like a great staycation. I went full tourist here once and visited a few places I had never been to and took a double-decker bus city tour.
Penguins, are you doing all that work at home for your retirement, or are you planning on selling? I bet it's all looking amazing! 🤗

I've got some very spicy rocket in my salad. It surprised me a bit.

MrsSPenguinz · 11/09/2026 02:57

Nice to have a lovely day out @Bizzey It was about 20 years ago when we went there, think there was a lot of gold decor then. Almost 30 years ago I went to Trooping of the Colour there and met the Queen briefly.

Thanks @Mumtobabyhavoc We aren't planning on selling anytime soon which is good as the housing market after years of gains is challenging now for sellers with sales taking a long time, falling through and prices falling sometimes though still way up on years ago. We are doing the laundry room and downstairs bathroom mainly for DS as he uses that as his bathroom and currently has washing machine and drier in it but we are moving them to a different room to give space for a bath, maybe a jacuzzi bath for him as he loves his baths and jacuzzis. We have done gardening twice, planted bulbs and cleared leaves and branches as the tree surgeons came to do next doors trees and went in our garden and also cleaned the silkies house. Have sanded the plaster in laundry room, taken up old lino in downstairs bathroom and put in a rug for now, cleaned it and ordered worktop for laundry room and got things in to tile. The summerhouse is also for DS. DS kept appearing at the window today, he looks like a long haired band member from Def Leopard.

sproutsandparsnips · 11/09/2026 22:59

@MissConductUSolives, tapenades, sun-dried tomatoes etc.
@Bizzeywhat a lovely trip I would very much like to go to Buckingham Palace!
Trying to get round to making soup from courgettes. My parents have also brought a butternut squash so DH said would make soup from that too.
