Come and tell us your dull and unexciting news 36: Calmly through the day

MissConductUS · 01/07/2026 18:01

A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

Uman, we all napped from 4:30pm. Me to just after 6pm and the kids to around 7pm.
Was it you that did the painting for you dgc?

sproutsandparsnips · 19/08/2026 22:12

@Mumtobabyhavocfirst time ever I’ve known…….but we cancel for frozen pitch due to risk of injury - there is heavy contact with the ground, so I guess it’s the same with a hard pitch due to dryness.
Ds has GCSE results tomorrow - great anxiety all round!

MissConductUS · 19/08/2026 22:57

Sprouts, fingers crossed for your Ds.

Welcome, @CrikeyMajikey, and thanks for sharing your news. I hope you're feeling better.

The front garden is clear of turkeys for the moment.

We had a lovely day at the pool today. Not too hot, low humidity, and bright blue skies all day. We're having pork and vegetable potstickers (dumplings? I'm not sure what you call them in the UK.) with dipping sauce and Cesar salad for dinner. DH cooks the potstickers in the air fryer, and they come out crispy and golden brown.

Hope your DS gets the grades he wants tomorrow @sproutsandparsnips

Lovely to have your grandsons and DIL @Umanresources enjoy it.

Well done on kitchen painting @Mumtobabyhavoc

Great turkey pictures @MissConductUS

Starting to get a little bit of much needed rain. Been gardening a few times and cleaned downstairs. Plumber came and serviced boiler and discussed a couple of jobs. We got planning permission for new summerhouse.

bizzey · 20/08/2026 00:44

And then peel it off .and off ....and off...and off...

Skin feels nice
.
Hair at the sides looks like it has has bubble gum popped in it !! 😁😥🤣🤣!

mathanxiety · 20/08/2026 05:16

Astonishing su set photo, havoc.
Beautiful turkeys, MissC.

We have a weather pattern at the moment where it's hot and humid by day, with cloudbursts at night. Compared to many previous summers, the chore of watering the deck plants is a distant memory. My peppers are coming along nicely.

As I suspected, the streets department has in its wisdom decided to tear up the street at the bottom of my alley right before school starts up. The asphalt stripper was at work this morning at 7am. The traffic chaos will be something else. DD and I have placed bets on how many weeks they'll leave the street dug down to the bare mud with manholes sticking ten inches up out of it before they resume work.

That makes sense, Sprouts.
Fingers crossed for your ds' exam. 🤞

Must be very humid there, Math.
I'd love my own peppers! I should plant some next year.

Spent some time visiting a friend in hospital today, also had a medical appointment and had kids to the playground and a forest walk for a bit. Dinner was a simple pasta with yellow bell pepper, tomatoes and spinach.
The wildfire smoke has pretty much lifted here, thankfully, I'll do some more painting another night when the kids are asleep and I'm not too tired.

In their infinite wisdom, our local council, or at least the bit that deals with traffic, has decided to close large numbers of the most important roads all at the same time for works of varying sorts. It’s causing absolute mayhem. Virtually every road has a sign saying 'Road closed ahead'.

I had to go out yesterday and discovered that the main road of our village had been closed (we live on a small turning off it) as well as the main road that by-passes it, so streams of cars were trying to do a shortcut and then having to U-turn. Haven’t had so much excitement in years!

MrsSPenguinz · 20/08/2026 17:04

Glad wildlife smoke has lifted @Mumtobabyhavoc

Our council has done similar @HildaTablet

It took the plumber 20 minutes to get through what is like a maze including some parts of a one way system open and some parts closed. It also meant the black bin lorry couldn't get through last week as cars park on double yellow lines and turning is now tighter than normal. Luckily the recycling bin lorry got through. The council are suffering from amnesia about the black bin lorry missing 2 streets and claim they have no idea. Hopefully it will get through next week with the works otherwise its 6 weeks between collections.

We got the asbestos cement roof taken off the shed today. This caused the silkies to have a massive girl fight which have never seen before. The white silkie has been the nest box sitting on eggs for a while so the other two have got used to life without the normal head silkie and decided they prefer it. White silkies comes out to rejoin the group and see the shed. Other two silkies start squawking and in turn both bat her with their wings which we have to separate. We were in garden doing garden and then cleaning shed after asbestos guys had left for 4.5 hours. Now putting a temp roof on until we get new shed which is being handmade. We visited the workshop before.

MrsSPenguinz · 20/08/2026 17:46

Just had a call from the council re the refuse collections and they said they have two different size refuse lorries and one can get down our road, one can't. They may send the lorry tomorrow or they may not.

inkgirl · 20/08/2026 18:34

Another one from me, ive been in hospital since Saturday and my boyfriend has seen me everyday since. Today I was meant to come home but ended up with extreme stomach cramps again which has stopped me from coming home so my boyfriend pops down to the shops and gets me a bar of chocolate and a lucazade sport. He's cycled a 20 mile round trip to check on my cat as well for me.

bizzey · 20/08/2026 23:23

@inkgirl ..sorry to hear you are in hospital.
Hope things are improving/getting better.
Your boyfriend sounds lovely 😻.

Sorry you are in hospital @inkgirl hope you get home today and are better and glad your boyfriend is looking after you and the cat.

The black bin lorry came a week and a half late but very glad. I was almost as excited as the cat to see a bin lorry.

Have ordered new garden summerhouse to replace old shed which we have just got planning for. Its for DS as he loves the garden. It will be ready around October time. Had a bit of trouble getting payment through, two banks are merging and I think they are having issues but through now.

The BLACK BIN LORRY CAME???

Might one ask what goes in the dreaded black bins?

OP posts:
MrsSPenguinz · Yesterday 20:47

Sorry for the excitement. The black bin is the one that has anything non recyclable in and is collected every other week here. Then every other week they collect the recycling bins - garden cuttings, food, plastics, paper etc. We have roadworks in a nearby street meaning the one way system has become two way for residents and the bin lorry has to take a different route with a tighter turning and people park on double yellow lines by the turning so last week they couldn't get through and about 50 homes had their bins not collected. So I have been asking the council to come again and finally they did. I put it on the village Facebook and we are popular here now and our neighbours have started putting notices on cars parked on the yellow lines saying you are stopping the bin lorry getting through don't park here. Now photos are appearing on Facebook of illegally parked cars. There's never any traffic wardens though.

Our cat gets super excited when the bin lorry comes as it goes close to the house and has a flashing light, he always rushes to the window and stands on his back paws watching them load the bins and the light.

Hope you get home tomorrow @inkgirl and its not too boring in there.

MrsSPenguinz · Yesterday 20:54

And even more exciting we now have an empty black bin which will be collected in a few days time so thinking what can put in it.

Thank you, its not as bad as it could be, my boyfriend pick up a book for me to read and I gave plenty of mobile games to play as well, so not too bad

Refuse @MissConductUS
(I'm typing in my very best British accent)

MrsSPenguinz · Yesterday 23:53

The bins are done by local council and vary by area when collected and what bins but many areas have wheelie bins like these ones and the black ones are for general waste. You get the bins from the council first ones are free normally. The lorry that collects them - picks them up at the back is called a bin lorry or a refuse lorry. The lorries collect either general waste or recycling.
