A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

Made a great loaf of bread yesterday. It's a tweaked Paul Hollywood recipe. 2/3 white flour, 1/6 rye and 1/6 spelt. I make the dough in the breadmaker, then bake it in the oven. It's come out very light and springy, and beautifully soft.

Fuckmyliferightnow · 26/08/2026 10:54

I’m sitting with my patner waiting to have back injections, thinking about cake Blush

Fuckmyliferightnow · 26/08/2026 10:55

@sueellekerI’ve been thinking about getting a bread maker.
I’ve seen a Lakeland one on Amazon, anyone used one before?

sueelleker · 26/08/2026 18:06

Mine's a small Lakeland one. It makes a 1lb loaf.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/08/2026 19:15

Sue, I've been meaning to make a basic loaf of bread for the kids using my enamelled cast-iron pot. We call that a Dutch oven here in N Am, but if I'm right that's farting under the blankets to Brits. I'm definitely not farting under the blanket, nor trying to bake bread that way. 😁🤣😇

The fish and chips van has come to our village so DH has gone off to get some.

We finally got rain today, had to check with DH that it wasn't a mirage, it was light but real.

We have decided to start work on the downstairs bathroom and the small room next to it which will be a laundry room. We cleared the small room today and sorted through what was in it. Also changed the duvet to a fleece one from a summer one to match the change in weather. Cat will be happy.

The Lakeland one was the cheapest, so I’ll definitely invest. I borrowed a big one a few years back and it was too bulky, is the Lakeland one easy to store?

MissConductUS · 27/08/2026 20:34

Havoc, I make bread in a Dutch oven from time to time. I got a Cuisinart stand mixer last Christmas with the dough hook attachment, so that takes a lot of the work out of the process. It always comes out very well.

Penguinz, I wish I could send some of our rain to England. DH and I had to do our shopping in a thunderstorm this morning. That was our third storm in the last week.

FML, what are they injecting in your back, cortisone?

I looked out the kitchen window this morning and saw a small army of turkey hens in the yard. A few went over the wall before I managed to take this picture.

It worked @MissConductUS we just got a thunderstorm and heavier rain. The garden will be happy as was DS who loves a thunderstorm. DH had gone out to get fish and chips as the van was 20 minutes walk away but it started then so he came back for the car. Had fish, chips and baked beans. Cat had it's tuna.

Great turkey photo @MissConductUS Forecast to rain again tomorrow.

I keep it at the back of my worktop, underneath the wall cupboards. It's not very big.

HildaTablet · 28/08/2026 10:33

@Mumtobabyhavoc I used to make a very easy no-knead loaf in a big lidded Le Creuset cast-iron pot (what you know as a Dutch oven) - it was so simple and came out very well.

Be warned, though, it was a slippery slope….I got into sourdough and now I have a starter and bake a loaf roughly every week. Mind you, I'm not obsessive about it, keep my starter in the fridge and just feed it when I need to bake - unlike some sourdough fanatics who seem to spend their every waking moment agonising over how to improve their autolyse, cold-prove, crumb, oven-spring, ear etc etc etczzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/08/2026 01:51

Hilda, noted! 🤣

Dinner was penne in cream with tomatoes (from the garden!) and kale; and sautéed asparagus and broccoli on the side.
Pics include kids' plate.

Food looks gorgeous as always @Mumtobabyhavoc

We are now starting to renovate the small room by the kitchen, making it into a laundry room together with the downstairs bathroom. So far we have cleared and sorted through stuff from the small room, cleaned the walls, ceiling and floor and started to paint.

After painting it we plan to replace the old lino floor with tiles so have been looking up how we can do that ourselves. Then we will get the washing machine and drier moved over from the downstairs bathroom and plumbed in.

mathanxiety · 29/08/2026 19:44

I sat out on my deck yesterday evening, listening to the din of the cicadas, the high school.marching band a few blocks away, and my neighbours and their friends all chatting away in Italian around their fire pit. From time to time, I could hear the crowd cheering wildly in the HS football stadium and the band striking up, so I guessed the team was playing well.

We have ragweed pollen today after a few days of mould taking the honours as the major allergen. Yeeeugh, and ACHOOOooooo.

sproutsandparsnips · 29/08/2026 21:04

Oh yum @Mumtobabyhavoc
Fish and chips is one of my favourite things @MrsSPenguinzand also glad to see some rain at last!
@mathanxietythat sounds like a nice chilled time - is it warm with you?
My new washing machine does not work - refuses to spin unless empty 🤷‍♀️
An engineer is coming out, could have had one out today but declined as DS was supposed to be playing rugby in Cardiff so we were all going to see DS1’s house for next year and watch the game plus a carvery lunch, only to find a few hours afterwards that game off…..
so engineer coming Tuesday. Extremely annoying.

MrsSPenguinz · 29/08/2026 21:14

Sorry about new washing machine @sproutsandparsnips

That sounds nice @mathanxiety

Heard from DD on her way back to Austria and the Lufthansa flights are as eventful as one way over - first flight was delayed due to weather so they missed connecting flight and there were too many people to go on next flight so DD was put in a hotel overnight and given a flight to Budapest which is in the opposite direction and then had another flight to London. She has now arrived and getting train back to Oxford. Flight on way out was also delayed and connecting flight missed then given another flight which landed in Germany rather than Austria due to weather.

Just had steak, new potatoes and cabbage which was very nice.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/08/2026 21:44

It's windy and cool here and lovely. 🥰
It feels like fall now and quite suddenly.

Tried to get to the Richmond Night Market last night, but the line up of cars at all roads heading in was staggering. The market is closing next month after 25+ years, so I think these last weeks will be crazy. Might try again tonight. 🤔

Had a movie on for the kids and I wasn't paying attention then glanced up and it looked like a dog was on top of a robot doing something rather blue Itkwim Oops. It was an animation. 😱
Quick channel change. Now have Netflix on.

MrsSPenguinz · 30/08/2026 23:10

Hope you could get to night market @Mumtobabyhavoc

DH worked on his classic car then we had Sunday lunch with roast chicken, homemade cauliflower cheese, cabbage, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and gravy. Then went gardening / cleaning house a bit for 4 hours with DH. A silkie came round with us singing.

Just about finished baking cookies here. While waiting for the last batch I brushed and flossed my teeth, did a set of squats and deadlifts, then 5 full proper push-ups and a 30s plank. 😁

sueelleker · 31/08/2026 09:58

Havoc; how do you steam an egg? Is that what we call poached eggs?
