A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Are the EU at all cross with Sanchez over this? Mind you I suppose they sucked up Merkel's ruinous shenanigans.

I cannot imagine that Meloni et al are thrilled.

DH just watched emperor Burnham's promises on the news turned to me and said we're all fucked.

He's going to pay for sons car repair this week before Burnham robs it. He's still a student.

Our pension advisor wants to see him. He's thinking he needs to liquidate and distribute or spend asap

Okay, I'm quite confused

What has Burnham said that makes you think you need to do this?

With regards to devolution, it sounds like a way to create more gravy train jobs

DH was watching news on TV. I was making lunch so didn't catch it. He's gone to bed now so I can't ask him which channel.

I’m looking the bbc and the defence stuff and ‘a source close to the chancellor’ blaming Healey for not being collegiate…she’s the absolute Queen of self-exculpation.

Healey wasn’t collegiate only in the sense that he felt he had no option but to resign because what he was being asked to do and say was wrong and an insult to the armed forces.

Healey was a Starmer loyalist and did a lot of heavy lifting when Starmer was in (frequent) trouble. And he’s no fan of Burnham. To resign when he did was the absolute opposite of selfishness and not being a team player.

Yep Healey has a huge amount of decency. Anyone Labour sniping at him can get in the bin.

Middlerage · 30/06/2026 10:00

I agree entirely, I suppose Healey had a different sense of who his college was.

Well said. A rare Labour politician who thinks of the electorate not his own party first.

As we are promised yet another saviour, David Miliband, (or ‘The King Across the Water’ as I call him) it is worth reading about his performance last time he was in government (and The Dark Lord raises his ugly head yet again…)

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/2460a5585c44935a

"I do not question Miliband’s decency as a human being. I do question his judgment and ability. It’s hard to imagine a more serious indictment of a foreign secretary than being among those whose lack of foresight opened the way for Europe’s bloodiest war since 1945.
My companions back in 2008 saw what was coming and realised, at the time, the errors of Miliband’s policy. Is it too much to expect him to do the same today? Might he possess the humility to see that he should not return to the job in which he so manifestly failed?"

David Miliband failed as foreign secretary. Burnham would be mad to let him try again

European diplomats told me they were furious with him as foreign secretary, but does he have the humility to realise what a failure he was?

Ireland is hotting up. You won't see much in the media but a sacred building in St Patrick town has been arson attacked. The following day a mosque in Dublin was set on fire.

Starmer has ignored it. I wonder what Burnham will do.

Thanks.

There’s always a first test of a new PM, so this could prove interesting.

It is marching season in the North of Ireland. There is always trouble, is there not? It will be most interesting to see who is responsible for burning down that former convent. My starter for ten is...not immigrants.

LupaMoonhowl · 30/06/2026 13:19

The marching seasons starts on 12 July.
Doubt very much it was the marching fraternity.

No, marching season starts long before that and builds up to 12 July as the main celebration. It is marching season right now, as I said.

What does everyone on this thread think about Starmer stepping down and Burnham taking over?

I'm furious and feel like it's a bait and switch. I most certainly didn't vote for Starmer or his rubbish government, but he's the leader that got the votes, along with his agenda, a relatively modest and middle-of-the-road agenda by Labour standards. But now after only two years and with three more to go he's stepped aside in favour of someone with a completely different and much more radical agenda and the country just has to suck it up! I know the Conservatives changed leader several times, but apart from Liz Truss (who was an unmitigated disaster), I don't feel that any of them offered something substantially different to what David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson offered when they won a GE.

Burnham, OTOH, is offering a much more radical and left-wing government than this country voted for and I feel that we're going to end up with a radical left PM by the back door and I'm furious and worried about it. I really feel that if a leader wants to step down that we should have a GE and that that should be the rule. It would make parties a lot less willing to throw their leader under the bus at the first sign of trouble and/or leaders to just chuck the towel in when going gets tough. I just wondered if anyone else feels the same way?

SapphireCasino · 30/06/2026 15:18

My somewhat random prediction - you know how I like those

I think there's a very high risk that Andy Burnham will decriminalise
cannabis even more than it already is

And flatdwellers like myself will be suffering the smell even more.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/06/2026 15:19

For all the smug comments about that not being what happens when the leader is chosen, I think quite a lot of people in the country share your view about how it’s a bait and switch @cheezncrackers. I think they’ll remember that when he inevitably fucks up or can’t manage his own party members.

I'd say what we need more is some form of making the manifestos a legally binding agreement that the party in power can't change on a whim.

It's obvious that Labour lied with their manifesto just to win power, and even worse that they put in a temporary "middle" party leader that they felt could win a GE rather than who they really want to lead being a far Leftie. So that's two counts of deception just to get into power. Now, after a couple of years, we're seeing the "real Labour" with a leftie leader/PM and we're about to see even more broken promises in their manifesto. It's quite simply not acceptable. There's now way that Labour will win the next GE, so they're doing as much damage with their politics of envy and spite as they know they'll be out in office for another couple of terms at least as voters won't forget their deception.

justasking111 · 30/06/2026 15:41

I was amused when I read that Burnham would not answer questions from the press just imagining him against Kemi at PMQs 😅😅

SapphireCasino · 30/06/2026 15:42

@cheezncrackers oh - I thought I'd found another fan!

I can't answer your question because I wasn't paying much attention to what labour said in the run-up to the general election

However, I do remember being very concerned about their building targets. Worried about green space basically.

KS has just agreed to give a £30k discount to EU students attending UK universities. He could have chosen to lower fees for our own students but no he prefers to suck up to UVL.
