A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I want to believe in Burnham, I really do. I listened to his speech and I didn't hear anywhere in the words: 14 years, reform, black hole etc. I did hear the word hope though. BUT devolution..is it just more layers of incompetent and expensive government? I work in local council....and honestly the sheer pettiness and incompetence and tick boxing exercises is astounding. The thing is I worked most of my life in the private sector, most people I work with now haven't. I'd leave if i wasn't so close to retirement!

It's such a shame we lost rishi ,green shoots where appearing and they came in and chopped and stamped it all down .

Such a shame Rishi caused the Tories to self destruct, crash and burn at the last GE! He was very unpopular. Especially the 3 million workers he excluded for spurious nonsensical reasons from the covid support schemes. That's 3 million voters who vowed not to vote for him, most of whom would have been Tory voters.

This is my take as well ,I'm not sure if it would be more or less accountability .
It feels like more opportunities for corruption to me.

Hmm I assume he’ll still do a write up from the video but still a bit controlling.

Re Rishi below I liked his policies more and thought he was right on Starmer, but he had a tough gig in terms of timing.

Pol Pot’s bedside manner was probably better than Starmer’s, so Burnham’s on to a winner there.

For me, it’s otherwise all academic - he will be controlled by the back benches and unions i.e. tax and spend, with a northern skew for the latter.

Structurally, nothing has changed and we continue hurtling towards the abyss. Some might call it pessimism, I call it fatal pragmatism.

Kemi is on the money.

Agree on both

WhatFreshHelll · 29/06/2026 16:44

@Bullandbear yes hurtling to the abyss but now he wants to spend even more money doing it.
Before anything else shouldnt every spare penny be going to make us safe ??

I did a stint in a public sector organisation as a temp when I moved up here. There were a few of us temping, as apparently the workload was too high for the staff enoloyed by them directly. Except it wasn't, or not to the extent that 5 temps were needed. They could easily have got away with 2-3 temps if their employees actually bloody worked efficiently.

I've only worked in the private sector, other than that period of work.

We were absolutely shafted during covid, but I still admired Rishi's attempts to keep the insane money giveaway at least somewhat in check.

Middlerage · 29/06/2026 18:33

@WildClover was saying the same to a colleague, his dw is local council and they said the work ethic (or lack of) is appalling. I was saying that’s why I couldn’t get behind more nationalisation or devolution unless there was some plan to curb the pisstaking on sick days, pensions etc.

i had a job for ooooh a year in the quasi public sector and couldn’t stand the general sense of inertia, had to get out as fast as I could.

CaveMum · 29/06/2026 18:50

Hi all, have been flat out “not working” for the last few days so have been trying to catch up. Haven’t heard AB’s speech yet but comments here do t encourage me. Neither did Paul Johnson’s comments that he thinks EM is the most likely Chancellor.

I’ll say the same thing I did after the last GE re Labour/KS: I hope AB does well - I really do. God knows the country needs it.

Sadly I suspect I may be disappointed, again.

Spain’s plan to grant legal residency and work rights to undocumented migrants will be the largest scheme of its kind in European history.
There have been at least 1.3 million applications made, more than double the 500,000 the centre-Left coalition government expected. The deadline for applications is on Tuesday.

Can we apply? Keen to get away from Labour’s UK….

inkognitha · 29/06/2026 19:26

Also highly skeptical of the devolution thing.
More layers, less accountability.
And I don't think it's gonna help to bring justice to the victims of the raping gangs, or that it is going to solve the problems linked to high concentrations of foreign communities in some areas. Quite the opposite...

Having come through Paris yesterday, I rather suspect Madrid may come to regret their Merkel moment.

Also my experience in my public sector roles.

I had to go out after work, so I'm only just catching up

Is Burnham raiding my future pension? And My savings?! (Don't worry about answering, I will catch up)

I realise that….😎

menopausequeen · 29/06/2026 20:43

No good will come from Burnham.
He has not adequately or even inadequately explained how he is going to stop spiralling welfare costs nor defend the UK properly.
He’s talking about changing processes which will cost money and deflect attention from our real problems.
Hd will inevitably attack those who work (or are retired having worked for 50 years) and expect them to pay more for the NHS (even though if you’re a working adult you can’t get an appointment because they all go to people without jobs who have the time to hang on the phone for three hours a day) and more for welfare.

Kemi is our hope for the future

Are the EU at all cross with Sanchez over this? Mind you I suppose they sucked up Merkel's ruinous shenanigans.
