It's not much of chat topic but Tesco just cancelled my delivery due in 1 hour - 'because of the severe weather'.

I've got to get an early train tomorrow and have just seen that 7/10 of them have been cancelled, including mine, again due to the weather. The forecast is 29 degrees and it'll be around 25 when I wanted to travel. I know that tracks can buckle etc but really?

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 23/06/2026 08:10

Well you can't have it both ways, can you? MN south of about Stafford demanding schools close and everyone works from home. That includes Tesco drivers.

ThejoyofNC · 23/06/2026 08:10

Well the weather is severe and you'd complain if all your shopping arrived inedible wouldn't you?

Mumteedum · 23/06/2026 08:12

Bit surprised. Thought they'd have Aircon in the vehicles and they're not out of them for long.

Lots of people who have to work no matter what.

Not sure I agree with cancelling shopping at pate notice like that but it's nice to hear about staff being looked after if it's needed.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 23/06/2026 08:12

I don't think it's acceptable to cancel deliveries due to hot weather unless they are able to guarantee priority delivery for vulnerable people. I have two elderly relatives who absolutely rely on their online deliveries and it wouldn't be ok to just cancel them.

Rondayvu · 23/06/2026 08:13

They have aircon AND freezers and fridges in their vehicles. How on earth is this affecting deliveries?

Ineedanewsofa · 23/06/2026 08:13

We’ve had Ocado this morning (Midlands) with no problems but it’s not that hot yet - suspect they may cancel slots booked for tomorrow and Thursday!

uraniumkombucha · 23/06/2026 08:14

I wonder if this is because of the fridges and freezers packing up as both of our local stores have had the freezers and some of the fridges fail in the last week because of the heat and I can imagine that is going to be worse this week

AbsoluteHoot · 23/06/2026 08:15

It seems ridiculous. I’d live to know the reason. It can’t just be that it’s hot.

This. When I said on another thread about schools closing that I agree as long as everyone else gets the day off it didn’t go down well. Apparently schools are hotter than mercury this week but everywhere else is just warm.

Malasana · 23/06/2026 08:17

It’s not ideal for you, I agree. But having said that, there are quite a few threads on here about the hot weather with people cross about being expected to go into work and questions about children having to go to school.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/06/2026 08:19

They might have had a flash flood or been struck by lightning. There have been huge storms over various parts of southern England in the last 14 hours or so.

Probably because they have to get out of the vehicles every few miles and lug heavy shopping up to peoples front doors or up stairs. And that's hard and possibly dangerous to health in extreme heat.

Wre · 23/06/2026 08:23

I’m pleased that the drivers are being treated the way that everyone else on here thinks that they should be treated.

CoverLikelyZebra · 23/06/2026 08:23

Cancelling is not on. At the very least they shoukd convert the order into a Click and Collect - there's no reason why the order shouldn't still be picked and packed in the nice air-conditioned store. Obviously still a huge pain if you don't have a car but still possible to get your shopping. Cancelling it altogether coukd be disastrous for some.

xogossipgirlxo · 23/06/2026 08:25

People working from home because it’s too hot to travel- goooood. Tesco cancelling deliveries because they lift heavy things in extreme heat- baaaaaaad.

Twasasurprise · 23/06/2026 08:26

I know a lot of the vans do not have air con in the cabin. I can't recall who, as I use Ocado, Sainsbury's and Tesco, but drivers have mentioned it in the past during hot weather. I've deliveries booked today and tomorrow. I guess I'll see if they make it. Hoping they all stay safe.

Because extreme heat often makes fridges and freezers break down

Justinthebath · 23/06/2026 08:30

Sorry but it's legit - the vans cannot cope, every time they open the door it gets warm, after an hour all the food is warm. Local massive TESCO yesterday afternoon had lost half its freezers.... Britain just not set up for hot !

Yes me too. Now I am just hoping for a message to say my 13hr Nursing shifts on Wed/ Thurs and Fri have been cancelled and we can all bunk off. Or as many people said take it as annual leave (as if!!).

It's 24C and probably only 25C when they were due to deliver. I think it may have been the storm that prevented staff getting in early.

I'm not frothing about it, just thought it was interesting to see the knock on effects.

Bit strange and OTT. Now countless people, probably elderly or those with health conditions now have to trundle to the supermarket, may not have a car, buses probably on a limited timetable, in the heat because they don't have any food in 🙄

Rondayvu · 23/06/2026 08:13

I had a delivery from Sainsbury’s on Sunday and they didn’t have any frozen stuff because it was too hot for the freezer in the van to work. Maybe something similar has happened here and they’re worried about food safety or something.

sweetpotatowedgeswithmayo · 23/06/2026 08:31

Urgh - honestly. I despair of this country. It’s not that fucking hot.

EarlyRun · 23/06/2026 08:32

They won’t want the refrigeration system# on their vans breaking which they can in the heat. Seems sensible. Hopefully you can pop to the shop yourself or do you have someone to help if you can’t manage?
