I think we all have. Look at where he is now, and what he’s done to the country. I certainly never anticipated such evil.

I checked this to see why Vance needed to lecture us on Tolkien. I doubt he read the books tbh but the films certainly hit him as an audience - and he probably read around right wing annexation of Tolkien’s fantasy world.

Whilst I think he has a level of interest in the LOTR and similarities to his views - as he sees it - I don’t think he’s read as much as he pretends and is instead just also using Tolkien and C S Lewis and linking them to WWII to invoke those sunlit uplands we hear so much about from the right wing - to get us hankering after such a great world where good triumphs over evil - obviously this is only when it’s Vance’s definition of good/evil. WWII is a popular rose tinted hindsight amazing time - so he’ll hope to get a good reach with the authors plus WWII - who cares about any inconvenience of facts about the books!

My very first thought was to remember George W. Bush being told of the 9/11 attacks.

I think it was actually Elon Musk I was thinking of who was doing the lecturing. Apparently the hobbits are weak and needed the protection of the hard men of Gondor to protect them from the invaders (Muslim migrants). It was such a weird interpretation. I also think he doesn't understand hobbits.
Apparently Thiel has also been sounding of in how most people don't understand LOTR (Tolkein actually thought the Palantir stones were a good thing and the right people need to be using them).
Vance referred to being influenced by LOTR but didn't go into much detail on how he's been influenced. Too busy telling the Pope how to be Catholic I assume.

I know this was quite a few posts ago, but I can't get over Scrotus saying he was the only POTUS to have a street named for him. What a maroon! There are any number named after JFK all over the world, not to mention numerous ones named for FDR. Plus a quite a few streets named for other POTUSes here and there across the globe.

And I'm not even going to start on the 1000s (probably 10s of 1000s) of streets here named after various POTUSes.

Sigh, that's my rant for the day. Time to get ready to join our local celebrations and later on eat hot dogs & apple pie, then watch fireworks.

I think because Tolkien was a conservative he wrote very evocative images of rural communities/imagined pasta that were worth preserving etc. And that appeals to far right types because it's aesthetically similar in a very superficial way to some aspects of far right propaganda. But Tolkien's conservativism was a very distinctly English small c type of conservativism which is almost diametrically opposed to facism, or right wing tech bro politics. Thiell would stick a bloody great data centre on the Shire and Vance is like some sort of discount Grima Wormtongue

I did not know that choice little morsel that Georgia Meloni went to Hobbit camp run by Neo-Nazis as a kid! This explains her weird mix of horrible politics alongside her cute feisty assertiveness, I feel. Or certainly contributes to it.

Odd that we don't appear to have any weird single date in English or British history that we claim as our own. Maybe the closest is November 5th. But that isn't a celebration of a founding, or signing or somesuch.

There was a suggestion that we should make June 23rd a national holiday to celebrate all the wonderful benefits of Brexit. However, the US 250th celebratory state fair is massively oversubscribed compared to the interest in that.
