If they wanted to stop him, they could; they have that capability, they would be capable of it. For whatever reason, they don't want to, they lack the will.

He thinks he is the king and acts like the king and it is working for him. And I have no doubt he will keep going and he will go on a coup anytime.

But can he really really remove powers from Congress? I mean, the President of the US, can he/ she legally remove any powers from Congress/ Senate/ Federal and so on? Unilaterally?
Asking, because Trump is showing that the US democracy is very very different from the European ones, as far as I see.
Trump is just getting away with everything! Neither judges, army, Congress or anyone seem to be capable of stopping anything... .

But can he really really remove powers from Congress?

He already has.

William the Bastard might not even have noticed Trump at all. Unless his bone spurs were playing up.

In fact, comparing Trump and William is quite a fascinating thought experiment.

Even William, allegedly, regretted some of his shit on his deathbed. I can't see that happening with Trump.

RedTagAlan · 27/06/2026 11:21

Yes indeed. I read the CNN article and it is OT stuff.

Which is odd, because when I debate Christians about the Bible, they usually say the Mosaic laws of the OT do not count any more because of the "new covenant". Or at least Brit Christians do.

The 10 commandments are Mosaic law of course. But I find, in general, that US evangelicals do like a lot of the Mosaic stuff. Stoning gays. Eye for an eye, etc. But the not eating pork laws come under the new covenant. Handy that.

And US evangelicals do tend to be creationists.

Absolutely - they're all about the smiting and the revenge.

If you know how William ended, you might want Trump to be compared similarly.

No more elections then...

Exploding in his coffin? Well ...

MushMonster · 27/06/2026 12:50

Yes, of course, we have no other option than wait and read all about it in a few months time.
By which time, hopefully, UK and Europe would be well on the way of further detangling themselves from any financial and defence shenanigans derived from Trump's actions.

First it was the second, and now it's the first.

Amendments that is.

Yes, as we non Americans read the 2nd, and wonder how the hell so many Americans manage to interpret it as they do, it now turns out that Trumps White House Religious Liberty Commission is doing the same to the establishment clause of the first.

"The commission recommended that the Department of Justice (DOJ) issue guidance clarifying the understanding of the Establishment Clause and separation of church and state, because “the phrase ‘wall of separation between church and state’ does not appear in the First Amendment or anywhere else in the Constitution,” the report noted."

I can't get the report cos it's blocked for me, but the headlines say they want to build a bridge between Church and state, rather than there being a wall.

White House Religious Liberty Commission presents recommendations – Catholic World Report

A bit more work is needed about who is in the commission. Here is what I got from a Dallas newspaper.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (Chair)

Dr. Ben Carson (Vice Chair) Yes... really... him

Ryan Anderson (Ryan Anderson, Ph.D., is president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center and serves as the John Paul II Teaching Fellow in Social Thought at the University of Dallas.)

Bishop Robert Barron

Carrie Prejean Boller ( former Miss California USA and Miss USA first runner-up in 2009 - wrote a book)

Cardinal Timothy Dolan

Pastor Franklin Graham

Allyson Ho (Lawyer)

Phil McGraw (TV host, Dr Phill)

Eric Metaxas Author, writes about antisemitism

Kelly Shackelford (Lawyer)

Rabbi Meir Soloveichik (The non Christian)

Pastor Paula White

Pamela Bondi (Yes... her)

Scott Turner ( secretary of Housing and Urban Dev)

Vince Haley (WH director domestic policy)

Is that a well balanced commission? Hmmm.

I vaguely know Allyson Ho. I can't believe her law firm allows her to do this. Her husband is one of the most repellent Trump-appointed judges out there.

walllaw · 27/06/2026 12:56

That Pete Buttigieg story is really something. Good think Trump's such a uniter. I'm sure he'll be calling out that kind of behaviour any minute now.

walllaw · 27/06/2026 13:14

I meant good thing. I don't know if it's mn predictive text or if I'm descending into idiocy.

PerkingFaintly · 27/06/2026 13:15

Sorry, @walllaw , I'm playing catch-up. What's the Pete Buttigieg story again, please?

A pity it was anonymous; if ever a person needed punishment it's the horrorcom who perpetrated that one.

Thanks. And eww! That's revolting.

According to the article, an anonymous caller contacted Child Protective Services.
"The caller said that he had spoken to a woman who claimed to have met me at a conference several years ago in Alabama, where she said I told her that I had committed unspeakable violent crimes, and the caller believed my children were still at risk," [Buttigieg] said.

He said the officer who responded to his home "made clear that he believed this was politically motivated" and that it would not be referred to a prosecutor.

And Michigan State Police have made a statement:

"The Michigan State Police and Child Protective Services responded and determined the report was false."

The statement points out that such false reports divert "workers from responding to legitimate emergencies and protecting vulnerable children and families".

I imagine the hope was the police would pursue the usual "shoot first" policy.

(You mean "Shoot first, ask questions later" , surely ?)

I know what I wrote.

I don't know how many here remember 1st hand 'The Red Menace' of the '50s-'60s, especially in the US, but I do. As a child I remember 'duck and cover', Cuban Missile Crisis, bomb shelters, and the fear that the 'commies will take over' if we aren't careful. The Commies were the bogeymen of my childhood. It was the reason we were given for our involvement in Viet Nam. I remember my WWII vet Dad calling the VN protesters 'Communists'. Shoot, the John Birchers called JFK a Commie practically daily.

Scrotus is showing his age in the way he speaks of Communism and is using the language we all heard back then. To me trying to instill 'The Red Menace' in the US populace is almost laughable. Or it would be if it weren't that MAGAts and other assorted idiots are believing it.

It's like he grabs on to something he thinks will scare the shit out of the Country and then pounds and pounds it in his speeches, be it 'Commies', 'Iran no nukes', or 'eating the cats and dogs'. He's like a one trick pony whose one trick is taking a shit.
