Yes, as we non Americans read the 2nd, and wonder how the hell so many Americans manage to interpret it as they do, it now turns out that Trumps White House Religious Liberty Commission is doing the same to the establishment clause of the first.

"The commission recommended that the Department of Justice (DOJ) issue guidance clarifying the understanding of the Establishment Clause and separation of church and state, because “the phrase ‘wall of separation between church and state’ does not appear in the First Amendment or anywhere else in the Constitution,” the report noted."

I can't get the report cos it's blocked for me, but the headlines say they want to build a bridge between Church and state, rather than there being a wall.

The Bible Is About To Become Required Reading In Texas Public Schools.
...Starting in 2030, all public school students in Texas will be required to read passages from the Bible in class.
The state board of education voted Friday to adopt a statewide mandatory book list that includes passages from the Bible for all 5 million students in kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as changes to the social studies curriculum for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. (A vote on changes to the social studies curriculum for high-schoolers was delayed until September.)
“Today’s vote by the Texas State Board of Education is yet another example of Texas politicians pushing Christianity on public schoolchildren. Public schools should not force children to read Bible stories,” Rachel Laser, the president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said in a lengthy statement. “This policy is part of a broader movement ... to misuse public schools to impose one narrow set of religious beliefs and indoctrinate a new generation of Americans in the lie that America is a Christian country.”
When the new list goes into effect, third-graders will be required to read a picture book based on a story from the Book of Daniel. Fifth-graders will read about the story of Moses and the parting of the Red Sea in the book of Exodus, and eighth-graders will read passages from Ecclesiastes. When Texas students get to high school, they will read about Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis.
Educators have said Texas’ statewide mandated list of books may be the first of its kind. Antero Garcia, the president of the National Council of Teachers of English, told The Associated Press he doesn’t know of any other state that has such a list, and school districts usually handle their own lists...

That speech is concerning. He is definitely talking to a cult. He is using the bible as a weapon rather than a tool, the same playback as other wannabe dictators. The question is when will ordinary Americans recognise this and say no. The tipping point is growing closer.

Small thought, opinion has been that he will do anything he can to stop the midterm elections, if he can't do that he is going to cry fraud and fake results.

What happens if he loses badly and just says no, denying congress any power? What if he closes the doors, or imprisons them all?
How much control over the military/national guard/ice/police etc does he have if it comes to a showdown?

That speech is upping the ante, you are in or you are out.

Let's be a little more specific about that: I see no mention, in the news item you posted, of Christ, or the new testament. So not "The Bible", but the old testament.

I'm not sure why putting the ten commandments (any version, there are plenty available) up in schools is thought to be especially Christian. Christ did after all specify that the ten commandments were no longer the ones to go by: he emphasised only two. Do any of these people actually read the new testament?

Which is odd, because when I debate Christians about the Bible, they usually say the Mosaic laws of the OT do not count any more because of the "new covenant". Or at least Brit Christians do.

The 10 commandments are Mosaic law of course. But I find, in general, that US evangelicals do like a lot of the Mosaic stuff. Stoning gays. Eye for an eye, etc. But the not eating pork laws come under the new covenant. Handy that.

And US evangelicals do tend to be creationists.
