Am I missing key shower steps or is hygiene tok excessive?

I’ve been watching hygiene tok and now wondering if I’ve not been showering myself properly all my life.

Saw a woman who uses an unscented bar soap for sensitive areas, antibacterial bar soap for smelly areas, then a body scrub, then a shower gel applied with a African net sponge, then lightly dries herself and applies body oil, then a body lotion, then a glycolic acid treatment under arms and under boobs and then FINALLY clinical strength deodorant. The video was called something like ‘how to not stink this summer’. I’ve never even done half those steps in one shower. I shower at least daily using a bar soap/shower gel and I do exfoliate every other day.

am I missing something?!

Words fail me.
What even is ‘hygiene tok??

Silverbirchleaf · 14/06/2026 18:57

Sounds like she’s been given a lot of freebies to promote. The only toiletries I take into the shower are shampoo, conditioner and a shower gel.

I may or may not put body moisturiser on afterwards, depending on what I feel like.

You are missing something - people lie on the internet.

Are you talking about stuff you have watched on Tiktok?
It's a load of nonsense and you should reconnect with real life rather than this dangerous fantasy world where people are motivated by self interest and self obsession.

ShanghaiDiva · 14/06/2026 18:59

how did I ever manage back in the 80s to wash without someone explaining it to me on TikTok…
no, I don’t think you’re missing anything.

JohnnyFedora · 14/06/2026 19:00

Yes .. you are missing something

youre missing living in the real world whilst watching people creating content for the sole purpose of making themselves money.

Turn off Tiktok and go outside.

Darragon · 14/06/2026 19:00

It's just oneupmanship of who can get the most extreme/ridiculous/noteworthy video and look, you're posting about it on the internet so it's worked to an extent. You're not supposed to copy them. They don't even do this stuff themselves IRL.

TheRubyFinch · 14/06/2026 19:01

You were watching an advert for a dozen products that you could buy if you just clicked on her affiliate links. It's just advertising, nothing more, nothing less.

AgnesX · 14/06/2026 19:02

This woman doesn't have a proper job to go. Imagine that malarkey at the beginning or end of the day while hoofing out to get 06.55 or while corralling the children!

AurielleBaies · 14/06/2026 19:04

It’s bananas. Of course I know that it’s mostly to sell items but some of these videos don’t have affiliate links and it feels like the battle of who can be the most hygienic! The comments are crazy too - people adding even more steps to the creators ‘routine’.

Step away from the internet. Although that would include this advice Grin

BlueHydrangea7 · 14/06/2026 19:05

I'll use a Lush bar soap, Simple shower gel for the undercarriage and a body scrub maybe for feet. Whipped soap or the body scrub to shave legs. Shampoo, conditioner. I don't usually bother with body lotion but if I had dry skin I would.

Damnloginpopup · 14/06/2026 19:07

I remember when the adverts said "take two bottles into the shower? Not me!"

XenoBitch · 14/06/2026 19:09

They are the worse types of 'influencer'. Not influencing you to help pick a nice holiday etc, but telling you that you stink unless you do some 10 step shower routine.
This is why young girls are wrecking their face skin barriers. No 10 year old needs a 12 step regime with billions of products that are aimed at older women.

Most sensible people do what works for them.

I think there a meme thing where women take 20 bottles into the shower to cover every eventuality, and blokes take in just the one... and their one product also doubles up as a car wash too 😅

I remember a few years ago seeing literal children buying up Sephora and completely wrecking their skin barriers. I’m sure it still happens now but I remember specifically it was the colourful Drunk Elephant stuff they loved.

FWIW Gynae ANP advised unscented soap for lady bits.

Her job is selling cleaning products. She probably does this at 10:45am or something after dropping kids etc.

TropicalFishAreTwats · 14/06/2026 19:15

I do most of that I think except I use one bar of soap for all areas and no acid stuff after. I do chuck a couple of caps of dettol in my bath and have just ordered some medicated talc for areas that may require it in warmer weather.
I was born early 80's and have never been on tiktok in my life.

Why so many different products? You're a marketers dream, using 4 different soaps when one type of soap would be enough for everything skin cleaning and shaving.

Why do you need to disinfect your body??

Silverbirchleaf · 14/06/2026 19:24

Dettol baths - that takes me back to my childhood. We used to have those after swimming in an open air swimming pool.

I usually shower but when I have a bath I put a couple of cupfuls of Dettol in my bath
My mother used to add Dettol to my bath when I was a child and so I just continued to do so

My DP does that too... adds Detol to his bath. He loves the smell and it brings back happy child memories.
