Which cheap and nasty food item do you choose over more expensive and better quality alternatives?

For me it’s chicken kievs. I love the crispy outside and the mushy chicken inside. I know they’re not the best, I actually work in a chicken factory so I know exactly what goes into it! But it still doesn’t put me off 🤣 Clearly my standards are on the floor…

What’s your cheap and nasty favourite?

I love a chicken and mushroom pot noodle over a chicken ramen at a restaurant.

I'm quite partial to a Dr Oetker pizza. I also like good sourdough pizza, but sometimes only one of those crack filled bad boys will do.

As crack-pizzas from the frozen aisle go, Dr Oetker Ristorante is a solid choice - love the ham & mushroom ... uh prosciutto e funghi.
Top tip, buy a bag of shredded mozzarella and sprinkle on any frozen (or chilled) bad boy to improve, plus add any toppings to hand (manky olives, etc)

TLDR: I ordered Domino's for Xmas eve with all the teen cousins (Xmas eve pizza party is a family tradition). It was such a swizz. Next time, I'll just do the running from oven to table b/c the Sainsbury's/Waitrose/Crosta mollica pizzas are soooo much nicer and have better toppings and 1/4 price.

Not proper cheap crack, but as a UPF avoider, I have just discovered pistachio spread. I am avoiding the ingredients list.

Just to add to the chicken kyiv chat, my top tip is to cook them in the oven on top of a slice of cheap white bread, then when the garlic oozes out during cooking, it soaks into the bread and you get bonus garlic bread as a size dish 😋

Genius 👏

Oh DH may have redeemed himself. Remember the little frozen raspberry ripple mousse pots that were actually better eaten frozen than defrosted? He found some of those today so I’m about to have one for the first time in probably around 30 years. 😁

Oh yum. I remember those!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 12/06/2026 05:39

Pot noodle but agree about Aldi gravy granules. They are the best.

sohard · 12/06/2026 12:51

I’m currently eating luminous macaroni cheese. Delicious. Far better than the posh stuff you get in restaurants.

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/06/2026 14:06

Dont know if this has been mentioned but Dr Oetker pizzas are £3.25 each at Tesco but are on offer 2 for £4 at One Stop! Needless to say I now have a freezer full of pizza!

It's frowned upon ('full of palm oil') but cheap peanut butter is much nicer than the 'healthier' sort, which is so dry and claggy that it's practically a choking hazard. And spreads better on bread, obviously.

Yes! I thought it was just me. Supermarket own brand tastier than whole earth or pip and nut.

Space Raider crisps rather than those gross kettle crisp things

Chip sticks if I can get them, plain or salt n vinegar. Rarely find them.

It’s God tier cheap instant mash. If you want instant mash this is the Gordon Ramsey of instant mash. It is however instant mash.

Honestly I prefer it to the fresh from the chiller kind - bit of white pepper - delicious!

Beef space raiders.
😋
Oh christ I'm auld enough to mind fan they came oot.

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/06/2026 22:54

Ate my first Funghi Pizza earlier and its nice but WOW it is heavy on the garlic! And it needs more cheese. I am happy with 2 for £4 but I think that the toppings are stingy at full price.

sausageth · 12/06/2026 23:03

Bourbons. The proper basic ones, not the fancy coated ones from M&S.

DontKillSteve · 12/06/2026 23:27

I like that cheap, vinegary, luminous red, thin ketchup that is normally squeezed out of a plastic tomato.

DontKillSteve · 12/06/2026 23:33

Walls ice cream in a wafer. Can’t stand expensive ice cream

I've not saw a plastic tomato for years.
First recall seeing one in a Wimpy about 50 years ago .

AInightingale · 12/06/2026 23:38

No-one in our house can abide fresh cream buns, but will devour ones with cheap buttercream and dayglo strawberry sauce in them.

Pizza. I like the really basic, supermarket own brand cheese and tomato. I also prefer Asda own brand beans.

Cheap pizza fan too! DH has an app that tells you the UPF-ness of food and Sainsbury's basic pizza is much better than the likes of goodfellas

LewKirtonHeavenInTheAfternoonNSOul · 13/06/2026 07:35

Another for the cheapo Asda one..I tart it up with sliced mushrooms.
