Which cheap and nasty food item do you choose over more expensive and better quality alternatives?

For me it’s chicken kievs. I love the crispy outside and the mushy chicken inside. I know they’re not the best, I actually work in a chicken factory so I know exactly what goes into it! But it still doesn’t put me off 🤣 Clearly my standards are on the floor…

What’s your cheap and nasty favourite?

Chocolate!

there’s an M&S one the I like, only 3 or 4 ingredients, decent amount of coco solids.

But I love the Aldi one that has more sugar than coco 🤣

Gravy granules

Whatnow89 · 07/06/2026 15:00

Ice cream cones, the cheaper the better.

@AintNobodyHereButUsChickens recommend Aldi chicken Kiev with sourdough crumb. I love a Kiev.

Gravy granules

Hands down the best gravy is Aldi's own! I used to always buy Bisto until I tried Aldi!

I'm quite partial to a Dr Oetker pizza. I also like good sourdough pizza, but sometimes only one of those crack filled bad boys will do.

The mushroom one needs a 12 step programme to get off of it

Aldi Whole Nut has WAY more nuts in it than Cadbury’s Whole Nut.

I prefer own brand pesto to branded ones. Branded ones have more olive oil which gives me heartburn.

Own brand energy drinks taste no different to Red Bull.

x2boys · 07/06/2026 15:04

I like a microwave burger

Mosaic123 · 07/06/2026 15:06

Tinned potatoes. Any brand. So delicious in the air fryer or roasted in the oven and fewer calories than you'd imagine.

Totallyfrazzledmum · 07/06/2026 15:06

Cheap pig brain hotdogs in brine !

TheChosenTwo · 07/06/2026 15:06

Haha I’m a food snob (according to my mum) but I can’t turn down a McDonald’s hamburger 😂 just the standard hamburger- spectacular.
And also, I don’t buy white bread but if the occasion ever presents itself I will demolish and cheap white bread crisp sandwich.
Other than that I eat really well 🤣🤣

worldshottestmom · 07/06/2026 15:07

I like the cheap garlic bread baguettes, the mushy middle does it for me idk why. I do like the better quality sliced ones as well, though.

That's my favourite too...

Edited to add excellent username!

DH and DC are weird. They like cheap sausages with less meat content. They say that high quality sausages with high meat content are too chewy.

Lidl gravy granules, cheap but so right on dinner (if I’m going all out I do mix meat juices in and perhaps a spoon of redcurrant jelly).

normal pasta rather than fresh works better with many sauces.

rump steak over fillet - ok rump isn’t cheap but it’s a lot cheaper than fillet

Quartzfairy · 07/06/2026 15:12

Pizza. I like the really basic, supermarket own brand cheese and tomato. I also prefer Asda own brand beans.

mondaytosunday · 07/06/2026 15:12

Cadbury chocolate. It’s the best! I’ve had fancy smancy Belgian, Swiss, whatever but give me a Flake any day.

JacknDiane · 07/06/2026 15:12

Cheap garlic bread

hahabahbag · 07/06/2026 15:12

Oh and for breakfast, Richmond sausages, but for evening meals I get the better quality mostly meat ones

makemineadecaf · 07/06/2026 15:14

I buy loads of own brand stuff! Cereals, gravy, bread, chocolate, crisps, sweets, condiments, and a hella more. I’m cheap and fine with it 😊

I’d rather have any cut of steak over the fillet, I just find it so boring!
Last night we had some great ribeyes from the butchers, so flavoursome. Can’t stand a fillet when there are so many better alternatives so I think you’re right to go for the rump - not just for money saving purposes.

Lomonald · 07/06/2026 15:16

I like a pot noodle now and again, I tried the Ramen pots they were nice enough but don't hit the spot like a Chicken &Mushroom pot noodle, Chicken Kiev is a regular dinner for us.

Denim4ever · 07/06/2026 15:18

The B and M ground coffee is pretty good and I prefer the vacuum packaging to the air filled bags the M and S coffee comes in
