Which cheap and nasty food item do you choose over more expensive and better quality alternatives?

For me it’s chicken kievs. I love the crispy outside and the mushy chicken inside. I know they’re not the best, I actually work in a chicken factory so I know exactly what goes into it! But it still doesn’t put me off 🤣 Clearly my standards are on the floor…

What’s your cheap and nasty favourite?

I raise you.. supermarket own sage and onion stuffing is my go to!

You win 🩷

Tesco own brand Frazzles. I have to ration them or I’d eat

Real Frazzles are too dry.

DH is now off to Aldi for chicken kievs for us. He went to cook dinner and realised it hadn’t been defrosted. 😁😁😁

Cheap pig brain hotdogs in brine !

no idea what is in them, but I LOVE Ikea hotdogs

My husband is baffled by the fact I only eat what he calls ‘shit crisps’. I’m a sucker for a brand name with most things, but the cheaper the crisps the better for me, and I actively dislike most of the ‘premium’ brand ones.

Also love shit white bread toasted (with proper butter though) or for bacon sandwiches.

Id take potted beef over a fancy pate, in fact that’s what I usually have if I’m doing pate as a starter for others! To be fair though it does have to be M&S potted beef!

My sister is a proper foodie, an amazing cook who has introduced us all to so many new dishes and ingredients, and who shops at local farm shops and little delis or eg in Asian supermarkets for specific authentic ingredients etc. But the only sausages she’ll eat are Richmond, my mum used to be the same too (re sausages at least).

I sometimes treat myself to three fried chicken thighs from the local chicken shop. The rest of the time I only eat first class meat from Borough Market.

I live in Italy and would bite your arm off for a packet of Bachelor's Cheese and Broccoli 'Pasta'n'Sauce'. Lidl did packets of dried mac'n'cheese recently as part of their American week and it was delicious!! I also have a fancy coffee machine but my favourite is a jar of lidl coffee granules. And when I go home to the UK, I always get my mum to make me bolognese with a jar of Dolmio as it is SUPERIOR to authentic Italian ragù. Likewise, I love a UK pub lunch of 100% beef lasagne served with cheese melting off it, perfectly some kind of cheddar and served with proper chips and coleslaw. Authentic Italian food always make me go 'oh' as I secretly weep for the good stuff I was raised on!

Oh my god, I LIVED off Bachelor's Cheese and Broccoli pasta in the 90s! And I loved the mushroom too. Memories of making that for dinner for me and my husband when we only had a microwave in our little studio flat. Those were the days...

iatethetvcontroller · 07/06/2026 20:14

Haven't seen any for a while but the really cheap and nasty 'happy snax' crisps were the food of the gods. Asda smartprice chicken and mushroom pot noodles are also far superior to an actual pot noodle as well.

I bought a few of these on the (one and only) camping trip me and ex DH took the kids on. One was a tomato one which DS had and he woke up the next day bright red. Emergency doctor said it was probably an allergic reaction to the food colouring. 16 years later he is now an actor and had a part that involved red full face make up and the same thing happened, so he has had to test various red make up items and provide his own if he has a part that requires it! So I went off them a bit after that, despite how handy they were for a last minute supper!

DH and DC are weird. They like cheap sausages with less meat content. They say that high quality sausages with high meat content are too chewy.

I think they’re right. Too gristly!!

Peanut butter - the expensive posh stuff tastes weird to me

Aldi's crunchy peanut butter is the best, needs a teeny bit of salt on it though imo.

Frenzi · 07/06/2026 20:50

Sandwich spread. Love it. I don't think there is a more expensive alternative though!

Even better if fried in bacon fat. 😋

Oh yes fried bread with tomato ketchup was my main pregnancy craving over thirty years ago. Morrisons cafe used to do a very nice fried bread using thick white bread.

When I was at school, I used often to go to my friend’s house where we’d have sandwiches made from sandwich spread and soda stream drinks. Coming as I did from a home where there was no convenience food whatsoever (we’d call this clean eating nowadays), I thought this was absolutely fantastic.

If he hadn’t otherwise been doing a good job of looking after me while I’m recovering from surgery I may have been tempted. 🤣

He’s claiming these were the only ones left as Aldi was about to close but I can’t believe there would be such a rush on kievs on a Sunday unless everyone else in here is in our town LOL.

LookInsideMySpottyBag · 07/06/2026 20:58

Richmond sausages, all eyeballs and arseholes but for sausage and mash (with bistro gravy) and peas it’s just perfection.

Me too! I don’t buy it more than about 3 times a year, because I will scoff it within about 24 hours - preferably on cheap white bread!

2pence · 07/06/2026 21:05

Delicatessan Fine Eating Swedish Style Meatballs - like the ones you get from IKEA and a pound a pack in Iceland are my dirty secret.

And those frozen Findus Cheese and Ham breaded triangles which are perfect for a plate of beige on a weeknight.

2pence · 07/06/2026 21:05

I really fancy some Sandwich Spread now 😋
