Which cheap and nasty food item do you choose over more expensive and better quality alternatives?

For me it’s chicken kievs. I love the crispy outside and the mushy chicken inside. I know they’re not the best, I actually work in a chicken factory so I know exactly what goes into it! But it still doesn’t put me off 🤣 Clearly my standards are on the floor…

What’s your cheap and nasty favourite?

@Seagullsandsausagerolls yes I remember them! My mum used to get them for us and also these cheap frozen cottage pies, 4 in a pack and quite small, in foil packets, I used to love them!

I bought meat paste yesterday to have on buttered toast 😂 was a favourite years ago . Let's hope it lives up to its memory.

Oh meat paste sandwiches! Chicken and Salmon are amazing!

Oh DH may have redeemed himself. Remember the little frozen raspberry ripple mousse pots that were actually better eaten frozen than defrosted? He found some of those today so I’m about to have one for the first time in probably around 30 years. 😁

Thesquaregiraffe · 07/06/2026 21:16

I like cheap tomato ketchup …. There is something comforting about the vinegary sachets you get at the “chippy” - takes me back to my childhood 😄. It was absolutely my guilty pleasure when my son did swimming lessons and I’d get chips from the sports centre canteen along with the sachets 😁🤣

Known as Chicken Jam in this house 😁

So jealous right now.

Ok he is forgiven!

I am so envious as I have never had any of those frozen pot puds that you could get in sleeves from Bejam/Iceland. My mother was (is) tighter than a camels arse in a sandstorm and the only food that was bought was what was essential to life. Nothing else..... unless she wanted it and then it was hidden and scoffed just by her.

Tarkan · 07/06/2026 21:27

Just as good as I remember them being back in the day so he’s definitely forgiven now. My throat is still a little scratchy from intubation so it felt really nice to eat, much better than the “nice” ice cream that’s in the freezer right now. 😍

Love Idaho potato, guilty pleasure is a mashed potatoe sandwich on a buttered oven bottom.

Also if you have a local company shop you can get left over genuine McDonald’s frozen hash browns. They are the food of the gods when on a muffin with fish fingers. Macies need to add them to the filet of fish.

What is a local company shop?

Tinned potatoes. Any brand. So delicious in the air fryer or roasted in the oven and fewer calories than you'd imagine.

Oooooh, I love tinned potatoes. I don't even faff about with them, just chop them up straight from the tin and boil them or just add them straight into a potato salad.

I use frozen mash ( that you buy) no lumps and browns beautifully

Edited

Yes I’ve done that too but the freezer is poxy in our current rented house - posh house- crap fridge freezer

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 07/06/2026 21:43

Ooh the people saying cheap sausages have reminded me, I much prefer the cheap burgers over the thick, decent ones DH likes to buy from the butchers or the Finest range etc. I feel like a burger should be pretty basic and easy to eat. Not like a thick steak in a bread bun that takes forever to chew!

DH and DC are weird. They like cheap sausages with less meat content. They say that high quality sausages with high meat content are too chewy.

Yep, totally get that!
I live a Richmond sausage because theyre sooo smooth with no risk of grissle as its probably pureed right up in there with the trotters, snouts and bumholes 🤣

Doughnuts. The Tesco jammy ones that are five for £1.25 are amazing. Would take those over a Krispy Kreme or one from the posh bakery any day, and I say that as someone who spends silly money on sourdough from the aforementioned posh bakery.

Love a pot noodle until I realised there are nearly 500 calories in one 😳

What is a local company shop?

This is the link to the company shop

https://www.companyshop.co.uk/store-locations/company-shop-locations

its a surplus store you has access is though membership if you work in certain areas (NHS/police ect) if you can’t join all you need is a friend or family member who can and you can go in with them.

If you find one within a large distance it’s worth it just for hash browns lol but maybe phone before you travel.

Our local one also has M&S and Waitrose amongst other things

Hope your near one 👍

Imagine all the collagen in it though 💅

I was thinking the exact same thing! Bones, sinew etc are actually really good for you!

Bertiebiscuit · 07/06/2026 22:03

McDonald's filet of fish - divine - very occasionally
A curry pot noodle - with extra mango chutney added - occasionally
Idaho mashed potato - often
Instant custard, any brand- always
Cheap mild polish mustard - always

Elferbowton · 07/06/2026 22:03

Tinned spam or luncheon meat on a butty with picallilli, going to make one now.

Bernard Matthews Mini Kiev's

Yes yes yes!!!!
I'm always disappointed though when the sauce explodes out of them in the oven and you end up with a dry little ball 😭😭
