How can I deal with my adult daughter refusing to wear a seatbelt?

IdaSpare · Yesterday 18:21

Please help, I'm at the end of my tether, my 21 year old daughter who will not wear a seatbelt either driving or as a passenger. She was always brought up to wear it and everyone else in the family always wears one. I think it's a sensory thing as she has always been very difficult about changing clothes or dealing with zips and labels etc but if she is going to drive a car, she has to wear it. It's quite unusual for me to be in a car with her anymore but every time recently I have been, I've had to tell her to put it on. I know she goes straight back to not wearing one when I'm not there. I've resorted to threatening to call the police on her myself but short of taking her keys off her I don't know what to do. I'm hoping I can show her this and she can realise how reckless and stupid she's being. Please, if any of you have any pearls of wisdom to share about dealing with a stubborn, know it all daughter, I'd be so grateful.

Doesn't her car 'ding' endlessly until she puts it on?

TBH mine doesn’t, it does for a short while, then gives up.

The police won’t speak to her, she’s 21 and knows that she’s supposed to wear it.
I would ask them to put a marker on her vehicle and then they will speak with her when they pull her over and hopefully issue her with a ticket. Alternatively she’ll get a letter from one of the vans because they check for the fatal four, speeding, people using their phones, no insurance and no seatbelts.

Can you ask the police to put a “marker” on a vehicle? How does this work? I really don’t think this is a thing!

wearing a seatbelt, complying with laws etc, will be a condition of her insurance.

She is effectively driving uninsured. She will lose coverage of her car if she crashes (I don’t care about that), she will not be insured to cover costs from any injury she sustains, eg counselling to come to terms with horrific scarring (I don’t care about that either), BUT she won’t have insurance for others to claim off for harm to vehicle or themselves (This I care about. It could affect me). And the victim injury claim scheme for people hurt by selfish idiots like your daughter doesn’t, and is shit.

Would she drive without insurance? If not, tell them OP. You aren’t able to effectively persuade her, other action might. How on earth did she pass her driving test? Report to all who need to know.

If there’s insurance it would cover third party losses or injuries.

I don’t think anyone particularly ENJOYS wearing a seatbelt, myself included, but too bad. The laws the law, and safety is safety.

People put the seat belt in and just sit on it

I have to put the seat belt in on the passenger side because my work bag is so heavy it sets off the alarm.

Snap!!! The work bag thing!

Could it be that it's the feeling of it near her neck? I get this, I bought a little plastic thing from Amazon that clips onto the bit across the waist that the crossways part then slots into, holding it further down the chest. It's still completely safe, but feels much less trapping and irritating. I use it mainly as a driver.

A friend used to work for police as scene of crime officer. He had to attend a crash where all occupants of the car hadn’t worn seatbelts. It was horrendous, had to work out which bits of bodies went with which. He left soon after, had seen too many horrible things 😔

It would be a marker on the police national computer. If someone provides intelligence regarding drink driving, driving without insurance or other motoring offences the police can put a marker on the vehicle so if it’s viewed by a number plate recognition camera it will flag it and can be stopped by officers.

And they’d do that for someone choosing not to wear a seat belt……. Must have much more time than I thought!

She’s only endangering her own life.

It's an offence for the driver
don't give her a lift

You don't drive a car with her in it until she puts the seatbelt on.

This and report her to the police
don’t give her a lift or get in a car with her
disconnect the car battery if you have too
she’s an idiot

NameChangeAgain48 · Yesterday 19:46

She's being reckless not only with her self but with others in the vehicle. People belted in the front seats can be injured or killed by unrestrained passenger in the rear. Also, emergency workers have to deal with the aftermath as do family and friends. Its irresponsible and selfish.

as the public safety film shared previously shows they’re not necessarily only endangering their own life.
Should police forces change the fatal four to the fatal three just because they’re risking primarily their own life? If you were driving and they were your passenger would you not care if they flew through your windscreen?

Mine makes a really high beeping noise until all seatbelts are on. I challenge anyone to put up with that for a whole journey.

Sadly this won't be the case for all cars over about say 15 years old. ( Just asked my daughter and hers defo doesn't make any noise) I don't know what else OP can do besides reporting her, which she probably won't want to do. It's a horrible situation to be in.

she wouldn’t be my passenger.. mine wear seatbelts.

It’s only if she’s driving herself.

Only if they’re under 12 I think. At 21 as a passenger they would get the ticket.

So you’re saying a driver who’s mum called the police to say she’s not wearing a seatbelt, would put a “marker” on her car on a national level?

I don’t think the police have that level of resources to be honest?

Drink driver, yeah they could plough into a bus stop full of people, but no seatbelt does not make you a danger to the public.

If someone provided intelligence that a driver consistently isn’t wearing a seatbelt a marker can and very likely would be put on the vehicle registration. You can choose to believe me or not. It’s the police national computer not the police local computer so any marker whether it be a suspected drug dealer, drink driver or this circumstance is national.

SeriouslyWhataMess · Yesterday 20:02

They really need to make cars that don’t start or move if the people in it are not belted in.

“Intelligence” oh please give over!!

Mummy’s called to say her adult daughter doesn’t wear her seatbelt and the police deal with this as “intelligence”.

I don’t think you realise the police are very stretched!

No thought for the emergency responder who has to pick up her head from 200 yards down the road?

I used to work with someone who'd left the fire service after they'd had to do that once too often.

WillieEccerslike · Yesterday 20:09

Slam the brakes on at say 5mph and see how much she's thrown forward, then ask her what she thinks the outcome of a sudden stop without a seat belt would be at 10, 20, 30....
It worked for my daughters friend when they were kids and she was being an arse, she never tried it again.

Gloriia · Yesterday 20:09

Tell her just to fasten it but take her arm out of the cross body bit. Effectively a lap belt but better than nothing.
