A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

The trouble with government construction contracts on a large scale is they don't pay promptly they work on 90 days for every payment. The committee keep changing their minds so costs rise. They delay payment. The subbies don't get paid so they walk out to earn some actual money. The contractor knows the job is getting behind the price of materials is soaring. They either hope not to go bankrupt or walk away. The job stops. So a new tendering contract is created.

HS2 stopped for this reason. Under budgeted, yet paid over the odds for many properties and land, the government simply ran out of money

Great articles this morning, thank you for posting.

Only two days to go until the UK plummets into even choppier waters. Reeves is probably sharpening her claws in case AB makes it to No.10.

What a complete nightmare. Presumably it doesn't have to be this way, other countries are able to knock out big projects?

Actually Jeremy Hunt was on the couch with Cathy Newman the other day talking about this and he was saying we are out of practice of delivering these kinds of things but seemed hopeful we could improve. Idk, it sounds like endemic incompetence to me.

They have to build to such a high spec. Heat pumps, solar panels so the houses have to be orientated. External and interior insulation etc, etc. At one stage they insisted on water sprinklers in every room in case of fire. The insurance industry had to step in saying that they would refuse to insure the houses and the contents of homes like this.

Yep so true. I don't work in housing, but presumably its the same.
I've noticed a big uptick in main contractors blaming subbies for mistakes in order to reduce the price too. Its always happened, but getting worse now. Can't say too much as outing, but a recent dispute I was involved in was a MC blaming a sub for damages after a leak. For the sub contractor be at fault, slow running water would have had to travel very steeply uphill. Obviously very easy to prove otherwise but didn't stop the MC trying it on, and lots of time wasted having to prove it.

Healey's giving his resignation speech in the commons today. That will be interesting.

Your Party on 0? ...going well then

EasternStandard · 16/06/2026 10:46

That -1 for Your Party is something 😬

Upstartled · 16/06/2026 10:48

Yes, sounds like it's time to turn off the lights, lock up and go home.

The next PMQs we should have a good sense of whether he’ll be around much longer.

Happily we got to see the casual bollard in comms before going ;

Nope! #standardStarmer

I don’t know the ins and outs of HS2, but 30 day payment terms are legally required for all public contracts and this fliws down to subbies. I wonder what the details were.

Public authorities myst publish payments compliance notices every 6 months to show how long it has taken them to mske payments to suppliers above £30k.

As for entanglements between main contractors and subs, aren’t there collateral warranties?

Not my area of expertise, but very interesting.

Yes there are.
The example I gave was of problems being made up in order to exert pressure as a project approaches hand over, rather than problems occurring after completion. Some companies are really bad for it, and getting worse. Usually the same firms who bid too low in the first place.

Wes Streeting seems to have launched his leadership bid this morning.
He has called for Starmer to resign after the by election according to the DT. Streeting also insisting that he definitely has the numbers to put his hat in the ring. 🍿

Appalling - and the poll shows 97 percent against this awful slaughter. Where next? The New Forest?

It's time to challenge these quangos - unelected zealots imposing their ideologies on the whole country.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/06/2026 13:07

What's also shocking in that article is that in Australia they're going to shoot horses from helicopters. WTAF? The chances of wounding rather than killing must be massively increased doing it that way.

What has gone wrong with the world?

That is APPALLING! Surely there will be objections to that. Why are they shooting them rather than putting them down humanely?

I assume it's because of the terrain in the mountains. But jeez, it's fucking appalling.
