A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It's not just damage though, I've got a 12 yo ds who uses YouTube for a wealth of information that isn't easily accessed outside of it...like how to paint the ideal Warhammer character, on loop - to perfect it as he goes.

And info about time and space that would be too dry in books - although he did give how to build a universe a decent shot there isn't much in books that isn't too novice like without being too expert - but YouTube videos provide an accessible middle ground.

Idk, he watches it in the living room so he doesn't end up in an algorithm drain of weirdness and that's how we keep some oversight. I can see I might be one of these bad parents prepared to operate tactically around this.

It is good for this stuff. Ds is older but really got into science videos and drawing content.

We don’t do YouTube for younger dc but for teens it’s the learning stuff that shouldn’t go entirely.

Upstartled · 15/06/2026 20:18

Right? I mean, he's the one teaching me about the concept of Dyson spheres. That wasn't ever something he'd land on in school, or a text book for pre-teens.

It's not like we have an equivalent to Jonny Ball explains all anymore, or some other easy buy in directed at a young but interested audience - that doesn't descend into manic noise, guffawing and slime as a cheap way to keep the ratings up. The Royal Institute Christmas lectures are fantastic but hardly enough to see you through the year.

EasternStandard · 15/06/2026 20:32

Same. Some of the concepts are really hard, and it’s great if you have dc into that stuff.

@SapphireCasino it's zone 4 NW. Tbf I didn't expect it to be amazing or anything, I thought maybe just a bit quiet or suburban. I wasn't expecting how run down and scruffy it was.
I thought similar when I explored around the Excel previously, especially with some of the prices at the riverside.

SapphireCasino · 15/06/2026 21:05

@SpaceRaccoon oh so very similar to where I was

It makes such a difference when somewhere looks pretty

I can only conclude that one of the reasons why areas get like this is because people genuinely don't care. Or perhaps, I should phrase it as they don't mind. Some people live in their phones. Some people are constantly going into central London and seeing all of the shows and everything and they are just not emotionally involved in the area that they actually live in if that makes sense.

I think part of the rundown area thing is councils misusing money. And they spend an absolute fortune on the stuff that benefits the people on the gravy train of course, but has no benefit to anyone else. Meanwhile, basic things like clean streets don't seem to be considered necessary. I can't understand it.

SpaceRaccoon · 15/06/2026 21:29

@SapphireCasino thank you, it's interesting to get the perspective of someone who has lived there.
I know there are run down areas all over the country, I think it's the discrepancy between how it looked and the prices that shocked me
Also the area looked like it must once have been nice, judging by the house sizes.

Pacificsunshine · 15/06/2026 22:13

@SapphireCasino I think most money goes into social care. Not much is left. What there is gets allocated to ideological pet projects.

SapphireCasino · 15/06/2026 22:33

@SpaceRaccoon I would imagine a lot of the houses you saw have been converted into flats

There was a really good programme on years ago, which explained how Tony Blair wanted London prices to go up really high. I've never been able to find it though. I don't have the BBC, but I've looked extensively at mum's and I couldn't find it on YouTube either

It explains some other things about wages being stifled and so on

@Pacificsunshine there's that - I appreciate that burdens on the state have got bigger- but it's also just the wastage. My previous council spent millions on changing the street lighting so that it was more environmentally friendly. It was probably badged up as net zero. And they had only changed it quite recently. Not very environmentally friendly.

i've only recently found out how many councils are sitting on art collections that are worth a fortune. It seems extraordinary to me that they can create all of these barely used spaces and they can't find a way to display the art and make money out of it. And actually some of this stuff that was bequeathed to them in previous centuries, there must be someone who can do some kind of legal Amnesty so that they can sell them.

Streeting: I’ll force building spree under emergency powers

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/5c8400abeb4c3e95

Streeting, throwing down the gauntlet before it's the Burnham show. Sounds ambitious, if not entirely likely - where are we getting all the skilled trades from to build more houses, install more green tech, build data centres and infrastructure projects at the same time, this isn't the cohort inflating unemployment figures?

But it will be interesting to see if these growth based pledges appeal to the labour membership or if they they are more wedded to further tax rises that would demoralise the overtime and ambition out of the workforce?

What a joke. Labour have strangled the construction industry!
Labour have built 342,000 homes in two years? Thats over 100,000 less than under Sunak 2022-2024.

Good to see their house building target is going the same way as their teacher recruitment target! 😬

Loving the pyjama / dressing gown suggestions. 🤣

Ikr. What a mess.
I see Labour supporters regularly touting more house building as a positive of a Labour govt. I could scream sometimes. 🙄

Starmer can’t get anything right, whether it’s important national policy or how to dress.

Bring back Lord Alli! At least then Starmer could have some more expensive leisurewear to parade to the country.

Some of the comments on the DT article suggest a few more Lord Alli freebies wouldn't go amiss. 😂

Burham's favouribility ratings are already falling in ipsos. Quite the sharp swing in early June, probably not the best news for an upcoming by election but, who knows, I guess we'll find out on Friday. Burnham now has a lower net favouribility rating that Kemi (although, only just) although she is on the up.

Polling shows a drop in support for Burnham. Perhaps the by election is not a done deal.
Andy Burnham’s popularity with the public has fallen significantly ahead of the Makerfield by-election, a poll has shown. The monthly Political Pulse tracker from Ipsos showed that Mr Burnham’s net approval rating fell 15 percentage points this month, from 8 per cent to minus 7 per cent.

Yeah, I got my numbers a bit mix up there. But the principle is right. I'm on mega steroids at the moment and jittering like a leaf, consider me an unreliable narrator for today.
