22 degrees sounds lovely to me too but it was 33 degree here yesterday which is very different to 22.

Dahliasrule · 26/05/2026 12:41

22 degrees would be fine but we are in the 30s. I think part of the problem too is that we had no gentle warming up. We went from cold temperatures for the season straight to a 30+ heatwave.

Agreed. If it was 22 I'd be perfectly happy, but it's currently 32 here and it will be a lot hotter by about 4pm.

Our cat copes quite well with heat, but she doesn't show a great deal of sense. Our house faces NE at the front and SW at the back, so the back is BOILING. Where does the cat spend the entire hottest part of the day? Yep, the back. We have a hall with stone flooring that is reasonably cool, it's also cooler upstairs due to better airflow up there, but does she seek out the cooler areas of the house? She does not. Daft furball.

Edited

Ok my messages were slightly tongue in cheek because anyone who dares to complain about months on end of grey, rainy, windy weather is told to ‘puddle suit and crack on’ and has to listen to the gloating of people who ‘love the rain’.

Fair enough if you dislike the heat but imagine months of it on end, and it actually almost being the default, like those of us who dislike grey rainy weather have to put up with!

It just makes complaints given we have precisely 6 days of this heat seem churlish.

Where the hell were you in 2022?

Fuck this. I've just bought an air conditioning unit on Amazon. I've thought about it for years but yesterday was the last straw.

We also did and now considering a second one for the bedroom. Lack of sleep combined with a weather induced migraine is hell, so at least with a cooler bedroom I can solve the first problem.

How are your autistic kids coping in the heat? 😫

So far so good for mine

@Dragonfly97 you need to stop the sun hitting the glass from the outside via a blind canopy outside or simply nail up sheets etc to stop the sun hitting the glass .

Thanks, any advice is helpful! When we bought the house it didn't cross my mind how bloody hot it could get in here, I wanted those wooden plantation blinds but the size of the windows, it would cost £1k a window!! When we can afford it we'll have to do something, it's unbearable. At the minute it's only a couple of weeks ago year, but if it continues like this it'll be a priority.

zingally · 26/05/2026 13:32

I'm in Northamptonshire, and it's absolutely repulsive here.
My house is an oven upstairs, and last night I lasted about 3 hours before giving up and coming downstairs. Fortunately, downstairs is significantly cooler, so I was able to sleep about 4 hours on the (luckily!) big settee.

PerhapsaSillyQuestion · 26/05/2026 13:34

@Dragonfly97 we have fabric on the outside held up with two nails.
It's working ! Stuff on the inside is ok but if you can stop the sun hitting the glass it's far better.

Wrapped in a fleece playing Fortnite... he just offered to share it with me , which is nice 😬
(He does have a fan next to him, but the fleece is a permanent fixture!)

Do you know what though, thats better than the electricity not working

They'll still have fans at least

Saw a fb post by a woman who said her water has been off since 5.30am this morning and wont be back on till 8pm Completely unacceptable

PeonyBulb · 26/05/2026 14:03

I’m currently sitting in my darkened living room with the front curtains drawn, back door open, pedestal fan on, neck fan which is brilliant and moving very little. I feel more comfortable than I dud yesterday although it’s hotter. I’m getting slowly used to it. My bedroom is like a furnace though. Sitting in the largest room definitely helps or my kitchen which is at the back of the house.

Well hopefully it’ll be on before that and one day is pretty good I’d say tbh

VivaciousCurrentBun · 26/05/2026 14:07

I bought a portable air conditioning unit, it was £380 and costs 20p an hour to run but I love it. Also and much cheaper DH has hung a white sheet across the front bay window. This really helps keep heat out as the sun is not hitting the glass.

PeonyBulb · 26/05/2026 14:09

My neck fan if anyone is interested is by Jisulife. It is the newer version with a pad added to the back of the neck to keep it off your neck as much as possible. It only blows air at the front and sides though not the back of your neck. But it makes a difference. I saw someone on TikTok wearing it who works in a hot kitchen in the US and her manager bought it for her. So glad I bought it

mumofoneAloneandwell · 26/05/2026 14:09

Apparently if you have sash windows, they create a natural air con effect

Can't say i'm feeling myself as of yet though

Not when there has been water running down Panfield Lane for a month

Duckmylife · 26/05/2026 14:27

I've really struggled these past few days. I've found the heat unbearable and I've had one of those summer colds which has made me feel absolutely crap, and I kept waking up in the night from the heat. Luckily, I drank lots of water yesterday and started to cool down, and I slept through the whole night last night! Feeling much better today but I'm very much looking forward to the next few days when the heat is (supposedly) meant to go down to a more bearable temperature.

So many people love summer but I can't stand it. The heat is my greatest enemy lol!
Hopefully things cool down soon and everyone can actually enjoy the weather without absolutely melting 😂

FennelGingerJasmineOrMint · 26/05/2026 15:16

I’m currently lying on the bed, naked, eating a fab and reading Mumsnet. What I should be doing is getting ready to go out to an event tonight. I need to iron, paint my nails, style my hair, de fuzz, etc. Cannot be bothered!.

BorgQueen · 26/05/2026 15:16

A drop arm awning/ canopy is a reasonably priced solution to sun on windows, it keeps my living room at least 5° lower than outside.
Mine cost £150 3 years ago and is standing up pretty well, it stays out from May till the end of September and is basically a huge roller blind with arms that go from vertical to horizontal as you let the blind out.
We also put a sail shade up inside the conservatory to keep the morning sun off, it was still 40° in there this morning though!

Duckmylife · 26/05/2026 15:25

Okay so I've just read this whole thread and I have to say that this may be my favourite thread of all time.

In real life, SO many people talk about how wonderful summer is. And I get that. I'm glad that people enjoy the season- but I am not one of those people. I am autistic and I really struggle with the heat (stickiness, feeling stuffy and overwhelmed). I also HATE the brightness of the sun. The sun is great but when it's even a little bit bright I am massively effected. I feel sleep all day (yet cannot sleep), I'm grumpy, tired and overstimulated. I feel like I can't breathe properly. I don't know if this is because of sensory issues or something else but it's unbearable.

I use wrap around sunglasses and they are wonderful. Without them, I wouldn't be able to leave the house on a sunny day between April and October. I now carry them with my everywhere and I'm trying to find some more that are similar.

Anyway, my point is that I find summer REALLY hard- I always have, even as a child. I much prefer autumn and winter. It wouldn't surprise me if a had reverse SAD- summer makes me feel all kinds of depressed. And when I say this out loud, everyone is always so surprised. They constantly moan about rain and cold and grey skies, and then they celebrate as soon as the sun comes out. Everyone always seems to think I'm insane for disliking summer, and it makes me feel crap- like I'm unhealthy or that something is wrong with me.

This thread is wonderful because for the first time I am discovering that it is not rare to feel this way. There are other people who are longing for the rain, and I'm not a miserable git who complains whenever something doesn't go my way.

I think we should respect everyone's opinions, regardless of our own. I am very happy that there are some people who are loving this weather. I am also very unhappy for myself, but I can still appreciate that many people love the sun and find the grey weather hard.

Sorry for the rant, it's just that this thread has made me feel so much better about my struggles with summer, and I just wanted to share that.

Good luck with the heat everyone- hopefully tomorrow should be cooler. And to everyone who likes the sun/this heat, I hope that you have fun with whatever you are doing to celebrate ☺️
