It cracks me up when I hear Iain Dale say that, when he sees a non-white person, he gets a warm glow thinking of them coming to the UK, land of opportunity.
It's a nice sentiment, but dude, tell me you live in Tunbridge Wells without telling me you live in Tunbridge Wells. If Iain lived in Whitechapel the novelty would wear off pretty quickly.
It's much more a political class thing. We're ruled by people for whom immigration means interesting restaurants, Ukrainian cleaners and Croatian nannies. I don't mind them being liberal on immigration, if they'd only notice once in a while that there are overheads, even if those overheads don't affect them personally.
