A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@EasternStandard "They are explicitly told they shouldn’t treat people the same to get equality of outcome"

yeah, when I first saw it, I was actually wondering if I had interpreted it correctly. Because it's so utterly bonkers, but it would explain a lot.

The crazy goes on whether or not I'm looking at it. Which again makes me wonder if I ought to be looking at it.

I had a really nice day on Monday, strangely, and against my better judgement, I went online on Monday evening. I really wish I hadn't. It's Wednesday afternoon and I feel like I still haven't recovered from it. And it's not like I can bring Henry back.

going to have a cup of coffee and get back to work.

My youngest still at university in Leeds. His partner and family born and bred West Yorkshire for generations. They've sold up and moved from towns that are no longer recognisable to them because of a particular influx. Crime has risen burglary, mugging, gangs, sexual assault.

In the last two years sexual assault on young women has spiralled in Leeds, university intakes the gift that keeps on giving.

Groups that go into shops intimidating staff. As soon as son finishes at university a few more weeks they're both planning to get the hell out of the city.

Totally agree too. The posturing around this is annoying.

Any suggestion of whether there’s a police issue and what to do about it is gone.

Absolutely agree. There is only process now no such thing as accountability. It is most probably written into their job contracts - “You will never be held accountable”.

I grew up in Leeds. Almost 30 years ago I took a cab home alone from the city centre (a licensed black and white cab, the equivalent of a black cab in London). I had a very scary experience with a driver who came out with multiple unacceptable comments such as “all white girls are slags”. Anyone who grew up in the area will recognise the demographic of the driver. The problems caused by some men of a certain demographic have been ignored for decades.

OMG, I am in total shock! We down South haven’t got a clue. Parallel communities.

How does this form part of the answer to the question of if the police were prejudiced in their treatment?

"We do not want this tragedy to be hijacked by anyone who seeks to divide us".

And why are his family requests for calm being used to obfuscate and misdirect blame away from the police ?

Edited

Playing straight into Farage's hands. I sometimes wonder if they've been infiltrated by Reform stooges.

The public are anxious that the police strive to do their best to ensure that their beloved children, regardless of their race, will come home safe from, say, a night out, a concert, a dance class, a picnic in the park. When something goes wrong how does 'shuddup you racist' from the people in charge and their acolytes reassure them?

Completely agree.
I live in a leafy affluent London suburb where people have none of these issues are just so complacent with luxury-beliefs and unaware of the reality of people outside the bubble.
As are the Labour government 😡

I found it very odd when I moved to London that any discussions around racism revolved around black people. I genuinely never witnessed any racism towards black people growing up whereas the “p” word featured heavily. Several decades later, after allegations of racism at Yorkshire cricket club came out and some former players from the West Indies were interviewed on tv saying that they had never witnessed any racism, I started shouting at the tv slightly hysterically. My DH was WTF. I absolutely knew there was racism at YCC towards certain demographics. It was well known in the cricket community and my brother trained at the academy as a junior. White people are not without blame, but lack of cohesion between certain demographics was ignored by the powers that be for decades, with issues such as the grooming gangs being the outcome.

Sorry, this is something that I could talk about a lot and I don’t want to derail the thread but my experiences (which included being told at a Yorkshire university by another student on my course that females should not be educated) have shown me that this has been a problem that has been ignored for a very long time including by the Labour Party, which isn’t surprising given that they have been very London centric for decades.

I do read and follow, what is out there/published on this also.

There is not much (anyone please feel free to correct me), said about this here in the south. We know of the effect of industrialisation in Northern towns and its causes, effects and consequences. The demographics, a consequence I suppose, although easy to see, can’t be seen by me down south.

Lack of assimilation and community cohesion in these areas is really worrying. Everyone knows this. Talk of it is considered racist. Growing communities have voting power, but if that gained power does not align instep with British culture and values we become more and more fragmented and it is utterly stupid of this labour government and our institutions to ignore this. Every time Starmer talks of finding and punishing and not about cohesion he causes so much harm.

DancingFerret · 03/06/2026 16:23

"Females should not be educated."

There but for the grace of God we go. More than once over the years I've stopped to reflect on the lives of women oppressed and denied opportunities we take for granted - and another reason to wish for the early demise of this dictatorial Government and the appalling Phillipson.

I'm quite confused

In shock about what?

I think some of this is less about where you live and more about how you live.

Though I think you've given me some insight into people who look at me blankly when I say I'm nervous about getting cabs these days....

I am shocked about @Boohoo76 account of the his taxi ride and what the driver said. That is shocking. Taxi drivers are known for their banter, but to say a thing like that is shocking.

I live remotely and occasionally I get a taxi from the station to home. I am never worried about getting into a taxi, here, and we do go down some long county lanes.

Oh, that bit

That could easily happen down South...though in 2026, I would hope it wouldn't

Not least because the cabbie will be trained not to say that sort of thing

You mentioned "parallel communities"and I don't really get that either

SionnachRuadh · 03/06/2026 18:28

It's not even a northern thing.

It cracks me up when I hear Iain Dale say that, when he sees a non-white person, he gets a warm glow thinking of them coming to the UK, land of opportunity.

It's a nice sentiment, but dude, tell me you live in Tunbridge Wells without telling me you live in Tunbridge Wells. If Iain lived in Whitechapel the novelty would wear off pretty quickly.

It's much more a political class thing. We're ruled by people for whom immigration means interesting restaurants, Ukrainian cleaners and Croatian nannies. I don't mind them being liberal on immigration, if they'd only notice once in a while that there are overheads, even if those overheads don't affect them personally.

justasking111 · 03/06/2026 18:30

You can live in a lovely sleepy unaware part of the country but you're sending your young adults to universities in cities where they need to be aware of their surroundings when out and about. Even if it's nipping to a nearby shop for a pint of milk, never mind going out to a pub. Young women are told not to get into a Uber alone at night. Stay in a group. Pubs in one area last winter were escorting the young students back to halls, just to get them in as customers.

This line is funny

They scold and scorn them and in some cases even hiss. Biologists call this sort of thing antimicrobial resistance. Political analysts call it terror of losing one’s seat.

HowdoyoureallyKnow · 03/06/2026 19:37

@DancingFerret thanks that I do like Quentin and I enjoyed his last line re the rage farage faced in the commons today v telling him off for allegedly inciting rage 🙄.

Honestly every time Kier opens his mouth he pushes more people toward farage doesn't he !

Nuthatch26 · 03/06/2026 19:41

The opening paras of that piece are really funny!

I didn't realise the knobs at the back were Lib Dems. Why were they sitting there, unless deliberate?

When will they understand that allowing that treatment of Farage actually helps him?

@MNLurker1345 oh okay I misunderstood

@SionnachRuadh I've had a look and I can't find any record of Iain Dale saying anything like that. Do you have a link?
