Yes because it only actually switches on when the temperature drops below the number it’s set at.

Mine is either off, or on. The radiators will only get hot when the temperature drops below the thermostat temperature but the boiler is running regardless.

If the radiators aren't calling for heat my boiler doesn't run. It is a new boiler though.

DH turns the heating off at the boiler. It still heats the water

Most modern central heating systems are thermostatically controlled so there is no "putting the heating on" or "switching it off". The thermostat does it for you. If the ambient temperature is higher than the thermostat setting it doesn't come on.

We have ours set at 20 degrees during the day and a frost setting at night, which is reality means it never comes on at night. It isn't on now as it is currently warmer than 20 degrees in my house.

So you're heating the house even if you're not in it? Seems a bit of a waste.

No, I don't. DH is retired and I WFH most of the time so the house is rarely empty for any length if time. If we do go away I adjust the thermostat so it doesn't come on. We have Hive, so I can start the hot water up again from the airport.

Modern technology saves us money.

Oh and our energy provider has just dropoed £178 into our bank account from the feed in tariff generated from our solar panels during April.

Most modern central heating systems combine a programmable timer with a thermostat so you have it at the temperature you want, when you want it.

Specialneedsnightmare · 21/05/2026 15:16

It's very warm where I am! At long last. I'm going to relish these next few days.

I think that some people may not have thermostats/Hive/other Smart device and maybe don't know how they work?

It's 19 degrees here and cloudy, but should be warmer tomorrow.

Sitting at sports day this afternoon. Blouse, big jumper and a mac big fat raindrops falling from the sky. I wish our heatwave would hurry up.

It’s 28 degrees here (London Kent borders). Fans on, shorts on and no heating. 👍

Fizbosshoes · 22/05/2026 13:23

Its lovely and sunny and warm in London - hooray!
Hope everyone else is getting some sun?

Of course it will be too hot for some folks....we didnt get much graduation into it, to be fair

RampantIvy · 22/05/2026 13:29

Currently 24 degrees in my part of Yorkshire but it is quite breezy so it feels like 21 degrees. Sat in shorts and sleeveless top and have just painted my toenails.

placemats · 22/05/2026 14:17

It's just gorgeous and I love it. Thank you sunshine 😊 and heat.

RampantIvy · 22/05/2026 16:03

We aren't even through the first day of fine weather and the moaning minnies are already complaining.

Housewife2010 · 22/05/2026 21:45

I started the day in boots & ended it in sandals - first sandal wearing of the year! I think I'm actually going to not bother with my hot water bottles tonight.

Peony1985 · 22/05/2026 21:51

YESS! Summer has arrived thank goodness.

No heating, no shall I need a rain coat/ umbrella/ waterproof shoes.

Just out in the most basic of clothes, no shits given

Fizbosshoes · 22/05/2026 22:43

Just changing to a summer duvet. (4.5 tog)
DS runs hot and has had a 1 tog duvet for a few weeks, it literally feels like theres nothing in the duvet cover!

Gettingbysomehow · 22/05/2026 22:44

Its bloody freezing here in Somerset. The cats are lying on the electric blanket becsuse they are cold and Im wearing winter jumpers.
I refuse to turn the heating on.

PickAChew · 22/05/2026 22:48

Lazingsundayafternoon · 20/05/2026 15:35

So you just leave the heating on 24:7? Mine is off all summer .

The whole point of a thermostat is that the heating doesn't come on if the room is warmer than the thermostat setting. No need to turn the whole thing off.

My DD is in Bath and said it was boiling today?!! In Kent it's been 26 degrees and sunny, I've just swum in the sea for 30 mins without a wetsuit.

Well actually, you could find that the heating comes on in the morning and switches off again before you get up because of how you have it set in the winter to make sure that the house is warm enough when you get up - this is due to the thermal lag of your house and to be fair it's more noticeable in older houses. You could always have a self-adaptive optimiser on the heating system. The outside temperature in spring can drop quite a bit overnight but rises quickly once the sun rises, and the house reacts to the rise in outside temperature - as I said, this reaction to outside temperature is more noticeable in less well insulated (older) houses. So, in my modern, well insulated, house I always let the controls look after the heating. However, in the older house that I currently live in, I switch the heating off as I don't want to waste gas by heating the house unnecessarily before I get up.

AgnesMcDoo · 22/05/2026 23:26

My central heating is still on. I’m still wearing my big coat and jumpers.

it ‘might’ get up to 18C tomorrow on which case I will get to turn the thermostat down at last

bit still taking my hot water bottle to bed tonight

Yesterday was the first day I didn’t have to do this.
