Ne'er cast a clout 'til May be out - and this year it's certainly true. Our heating has been on, I'm still not out of thermals, and I'm still wearing my winter coat to walk the dog. Here's hoping the warmer weather hits Edinburgh.

That quote refers also to the Hawthorn blossom, which is out. Gardeners know that frost can happen in May and to shield non hardy annuals. It's a great old saying.

"Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date;" - Sonnet XVIII. Shakespeare.

Thankfully no rough winds this week.

Lifeomars · 16/05/2026 14:33

I bought a new summer dress, that's asking for trouble.

justasking111 · 16/05/2026 14:34

DH has made an Irish soda bread loaf. I shall enjoy that

I haven't even been tempted to window shopping 😩

I was thinking fondly about dumplings the other day.

Same here, spotted a packet of half used suet in the cupboard and thought how nice a big bowl of stew and dumplings would be with some creamy mash and a cripy Yorkshire pudding. Feels like early March here.

We had hail that landed and froze on Wednesday! This time last year we were in the Scottish Highlands in shorts and T shirts,

The thing is, i love the cold weather

But having it now means its just gonna be hot in November 🥺

Ridiculous - bring on the summer so we can get it over with, I say!

@mumofoneAloneandwell

why on earth would anyone love cold weather?!

The husband has been quoting this all week 😀

I have not known a May this cold and miserable for years, feels like we are heading into winter, not summer. Fed up of it 😒

I was perplexed by the hot in November sentence.

Livpool · 16/05/2026 14:43

It is like October!

I washed, aired and put away the winter duvet a couple of weeks ago. So now we're wearing thermal layers to bed under the summer duvet.

Our heating has been on too.

Looking forward to warmer weather at the end of next week.

So we can blame you for the 🥶 weather, then!

I have multiple warm layers on, plus my sheepskin house boots, since we have had no heating (long complicated story) since just before Easter. Now using fan heaters on and off, and if I’m in the kitchen I turn the fan oven on full blast with the door open.

And I have rediscovered a lovely hot water bottle! Not just for bed, either.

TheToteBagLady · 16/05/2026 14:45

My iPhone weather app says that it currently feels like 6 degrees 🥶

I’m wearing a cashmere jumper over a cotton tee shirt, heavy winter leggings I recovered from the put-away-for-the-summer bags, socks, sheepskin bootees.
Yesterday I wore a lined raincoat, woolly hat and gloves, to walk into town.
This morning at 2.00am I woke up cold, made a mug of herbal tea and switched
the heating on. We are in South Oxfordshire. Its dull today with high humidity.
I have a casserole in the oven for later, shin beef, carrots onions kidney beans
to have with requested herb dumplings. dumplings! in May!
Also requested is a pudding with custard.
Its mid May, rhymes with dismay.

I’m doing beef stew and dumplings tommorrow

Miserable enough here in Dublin. Rainy and greyish.
But improving.
Pickets of blue sky through the clouds.

JuliettaCaeser · 16/05/2026 14:48

I don’t want to hear one word from the summer whingers we’ve had months of your favoured grey cold now 🙄

But that doesn’t mean the month of May - it’s May flower and it’s been well out here for a while!

I had a thermal top on Thursday for a long walk. Was fine until the sun came out and then I was baking!

Lomonald · 16/05/2026 14:50

It is cloudy/sunny/windy here it is cold though, I met my Dd in town for coffee and I had my "big jacket" on.

My dad said to me recently that my grandad would never have put bedding plants out this early. It was June for him. Mine went out in April!

I know, right. It's almost like different people like different things, no? So odd.

Walkyrie · 16/05/2026 14:51

It’s been really nice here, generally dry and lots of warm sunny days but freezing as night due to lack of cloud cover, and yep today is really grey and chilly. Heating has gone on which is annoying.

@mumofoneAloneandwell

I love cold days with sun and a blue sky. I like winter clothes: a good coat, cashmere, a cosy hat and socks. I love coming in feeling cold and then drinking tea and wrapping up in a blanket.
I do also like warm weather. I think all times of year and types of weather have their charms.

bananaapplepears · 16/05/2026 14:55

I prefer cold weather. Better for running, i hate being sticky and sweaty with suncream, i hate being unable to sleep due to the heat, less wasps and bugs around in cold weather.
