26 degrees on Friday according to Met Office app. Someone will be starting a MN thread saying it’s too hot, you watch. Grin

AsimpleOstrich · 16/05/2026 17:55

Its not gone above 8C today here in my part of West Yorkshire. It was 3C first thing this morning and 1C yesterday at 6 am!
The heating is still on.

JuliettaCaeser · 16/05/2026 18:27

The heat moaners have had months of their adored freezing wind and grey skies. Bring on sun and warmth can’t come soon enough for me.

loislovesstewie · 16/05/2026 17:16

It's not the month that's referred to though, it's May blossom which is the hawthorn tree.

Aye, and its still in bud here in N.E England. I'm eyeing up me wool semmit

Fizbosshoes · 16/05/2026 18:36

I (somewhat foolishly) agreed to go to a outdoor event with DH and DS today. It was so unbelievably chilly. Even the "indoor" area was open one side and barely a degree warmer than outside.
I bought a tshirt i didnt especially want at the merch stall just so I had some thing extra to wear (I couldnt bring myself to pay 35 for a hoodie I wouldnt wear again, but was sorely tempted)
Ive been home an hour and a half and still not fully warmed up

In north Wales they're saying 17c. The 26c is for the south east.

Hopefully June will be sunny and warm, and who knows maybe even July.

Fizbosshoes · 16/05/2026 18:43

They'll be someone along in a minute to try and persuade us it isnt actually cold/that bad. It was like a year or so ago where it rained almost every day for months, from about November until April . The met Office had records, farmers and people in industries that rely on (at least some) dry weather were all complaining....as well as just folk.who were sick to death of grey miserable windy wet weather...and there were posters insisting everyone was exaggerating!

Was 14c in our hallway this morning. DH wore thermals to walk the dogs who aren't moulting much even the Labrador hasn't lost her winter coat.

Freezing here. Might light a fire.

July and August we get a fair bit of rain in Wales with the prevailing westerlies.

Ours has been lit since lunchtime 🥶

Been out today and now sitting in a winter fleece top with the heating on. Colder May than usual 🥶

AmethystDeceiver · 16/05/2026 18:49

Also in North Wales (waves hello). It was our town's carnival today - absolutely freezing! I'm now in a hot bath trying to recover while DH makes a fire.

The kids didn't seem to notice or mind though, and everything is looking very green and lush in the mist, it's very beautiful still. And it gets better from tomorrow apparently...

Whataflippincircus · 16/05/2026 18:50

Yes my heating is on and I have an electric throw on the sofa. It supposed to warm up next week.

👋 back. OH I am sorry. People work so hard to make carnivals a success.

No clouts have been cast here, and the may (hawthorn) in my garden is not only out, but on the way out. I've been putting off buying a dress for a May wedding, and time is running out. Will I be wafting around in something loose and floaty, or fully upholstered in the same formal gear I might have worn in January?
That said, I'm not unhappy with still being able to snuggle up properly in bed, rather than sweating the night away.

justasking111 · 16/05/2026 19:05

Feel I've been robbed of the middling bit of spring warm days but chilly nights 😭

There's a European legend since medieval times about mid-May being cold although apparently statistically it doesn't hang together.
Have a Google for "ice saints".

It’s 10C at the moment (3pm) and would’ve been cooler this morning. I live in Greater Manchester and I was in a T-shirt, light jumper and summer raincoat this morning and wasn’t cold. Has it been colder in Oxford?

We haven't had the nightly frosts some people down south have had. But we won't get the 28 degree temps they will get next week booo.

Thanks! It was a huge success, despite being freezing. The kids don't mind and the adults are all used to it - it can be like this is August too, as you well know!!

hungryphil · 16/05/2026 19:28

Woodburner on, hot water bottle in the night. Crazy for mid May.

Chipsahoy · 16/05/2026 19:39

It was lovely today… at the garden centre in their huge poly tunnel and green house. Could have stayed all day just for the warmth!

Log burner on since we got home.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/05/2026 19:39

I’m just itching to wear my summer things, it’s getting me down
