Cold weather is lovely, why do you think so many love autumn and winter, live in cold places?

OriginalPedant · 16/05/2026 14:58

We’re sitting on our outdoor sofas but wearing padded coats and under blankets.

JuliettaCaeser · 16/05/2026 15:02

I also will never understand the cold weather worship. Urgh. That bitter cold wind over the last few days. Sod off! There are literally about 3 days in December that are clear and cold and beautiful the rest of the time it’s cold grey miz.

I’m wearing a cashmere jumper over a cotton tee shirt, heavy winter leggings I recovered from the put-away-for-the-summer bags, socks, sheepskin bootees.
Yesterday I wore a lined raincoat, woolly hat and gloves, to walk into town.
This morning at 2.00am I woke up cold, made a mug of herbal tea and switched
the heating on. We are in South Oxfordshire. Its dull today with high humidity.
I have a casserole in the oven for later, shin beef, carrots onions kidney beans
to have with requested herb dumplings. dumplings! in May!
Also requested is a pudding with custard.
Its mid May, rhymes with dismay.

It’s 10C at the moment (3pm) and would’ve been cooler this morning. I live in Greater Manchester and I was in a T-shirt, light jumper and summer raincoat this morning and wasn’t cold. Has it been colder in Oxford?

deeahgwitch · 16/05/2026 15:15

I put bedding plants in in late May.
There’s still a risk of frost.

That's in the mountains though not at low and coastal levels.

Newcastle, 27th may 1961. My parents wedding! It was snowing

Musicaltheatremum · 16/05/2026 15:17

Thursday I got my "big coat" out again in Edinburgh. It was freezing. Today I'm too warm in the sun.

shellyleppard · 16/05/2026 15:18

Currently wearing top, sweatshirt and body warmer. Central heating is still on .....🥶🥶

I like cool weather but when it’s crisp and sunny and we don’t actually get that much of it in Somerset - if it’s cold tends far more to be grey and windy and drizzly . Hence why these days I prefer summer- we got far more if the cool and crisp and sunny when we lived in Copenhagen

Hollyhobbi · 16/05/2026 15:21

Just had the gas boiler serviced yesterday and it needs a new seal so I can’t turn it on until it’s fixed next Wednesday. Dd2 wanted to turn it on this morning and she’s never cold. May light the fire this evening! My mum is 83 and she says she can’t remember a May as cold!

Buscobel · 16/05/2026 15:29

We’ve had heavy wind all week and midweek, torrential rain and hail.

Gatekeeper · 16/05/2026 15:51

Log burner is on
I'm wearing wool socks
And a jumperrrrr
When will it get warm

English trad. Song in the month of May

deeahgwitch · 16/05/2026 16:12

The sky went blue for a while.
Now back to grey.
That’s why I couldn’t understand the trend for grey interiors. We have grey outside a lot of the time why bring it inside too. 😀

Daftypants · 16/05/2026 16:21

It’s ok here because garden is south facing so my kitchen/ dining / family is comfortable.
But I am still using my winter duvet and putting a warm coat on to take dog his evening tootle

coffeeagogo · 16/05/2026 16:25

I’ve just gone upstairs to put on a long sleeve t-shirt and a jumper - I’m bloody freezing!

fantam · 16/05/2026 16:27

It is unseasonably cold, and has been for some time now. For me, the cold wind is the worst, it just gets everywhere and is hard to shield from. I still have the heated blanket on the bed, and honestly would freeze these days without it.

However, I reckon June to September will be magnificent. You heard it here first. Gotta keep the optimism going!

Gamboldi · 16/05/2026 16:28

Yep, bloody chilly here today too but I refuse to put the heating on.

I do remember last year sitting under blankets for a time in May after a nice April. I also remember putting foil on our south facing windows to try and reflect some of the insane heat just a month or so later.

Sat on a beach in Morayshire in June looking across the water to snow on the Blackisle.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/05/2026 16:34

I've lit the fire!

Housewife2010 · 16/05/2026 16:34

I've done Footner. My feet have finished peeling, and are soft and crust free. The sandals are down from the loft and waiting. I just need the weather to join in! 🤞☀️

loislovesstewie · 16/05/2026 16:42

It's flipping cold here on the Yorkshire coast! The wind is coming direct from the north, when it drops it's immediately warmer. I'm going for a walk at 5ish, then the heating comes on. The cat isn't thrilled either.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/05/2026 16:45

It’s 11o and drizzly in my bit of rural West Yorks. Autumnal.

Ne'er cast a clout 'til May be out - and this year it's certainly true. Our heating has been on, I'm still not out of thermals, and I'm still wearing my winter coat to walk the dog. Here's hoping the warmer weather hits Edinburgh.

That’s what my mum used to say! Thankfully warming up next week …

It's not the month that's referred to though, it's May blossom which is the hawthorn tree.
