It’s very cold, this global warming they keep going on about. And yes, I never want to hear from summer moaners again. And before they start on “worst drought ever”, I haven’t forgotten how this year started,

Edited

It's global warming and the upshot could well be very cold summers in the Islands of the North Atlantic which relies heavily on the North Atlantic Drift.

Especially these regarding the North Atlantic Drift

Concerns: Because this current is tied to the broader Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), researchers at institutions like the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research are actively studying how melting ice in Greenland could disrupt these currents.

The last paragraph is from AI. Google Search

Agreed! I can’t stand the summer moaners because, at best, we have 8 weeks of hot weather. Rest of this year is cold, wet and damp.

With the exception of a very few years - last year for example, I agree. You would think that those who don't tolerate heat very well had to put up with months and months of hot weather from they way they complain. It definitely isn't the case that we get long hot summers every year.

I would like to not have to have the heating on, to be able to sit outside in short sleeves and to be able to leave the house without having to layer up.

@JuliettaCaeser

they love it cos they can stay home with candles, blankets and pj’s and not have to go out and socialise 🤣

No I love going out in the cold. Everywhere is quiet and I’m not sweaty and covered in sunscreen.

Fizbosshoes · 18/05/2026 19:59

the overall impact is global warming but climate change seems to mean more extremes of weather, not just heat. So wetter, more storms, wind etc as well as some (in the uk, at least) warmer temperatures.
There havent been all that many recent summers where weve had weeks and weeks of uninterrupted hot weather. 2023 for example, i remember a lot of june being hot and sunny, but the school summer holidays were actually very underwhelming. I think it was one of the wettest July's on record.

RampantIvy · 18/05/2026 20:37

I think it was one of the wettest July's on record.

It was in Yorkshire. It was actually the wettest July on record.

We don’t need snoods, winter gloves, thermal layers.

A light decent water/wind proof has been fine for a couple of months.

20 minutes with a stand alone radiator in main room is plenty, heating set around 15C - it hasn’t come on for weeks.

So not quite summer clothing but far from winter clothing.

Anyone would think we only have two seasons!

Ahh, a classic MN competitive ‘we don’t feel the cold / have our heating set ridiculously low’ post! I’d hate to live in a house where the heating is set to 15

Fizbosshoes · 18/05/2026 21:26

One of the things I notice on threads about weather is that there are those of us who get fed up of cold wet dreary windy dull weatherfor months and others who complain about "too hot" weather.

Like theres no in between that both parties might enjoy?

I'm never sure where too hot starts? 15°?? 18? 20? 25?

There's quite a big range between 8 or 10 degrees, windy and dull......and uncomfortably hot or sweltering. At the moment id settle for 15 and sunny ....which is not especially balmy

managingexpectations · Yesterday 02:15

@deeahgwitch central Scotland 🥶 it was early (6am) and i definitely hadn’t factored that into my morning

Penkie · Yesterday 02:19

So windy too that it feels biting to the bones.

It isn’t set at 15 in the winter.

But it’s not winter weather

There is clearly enough body and living heat in the house to make it feel fine. Which indicates the air has warmed a bit.

What to do? Some people complain about all weathers, about it not being the weather they expect on a certain date yet continue with lifestyles that contribute to future weather being more unpredictable and extreme.

I think I'm going to paint my toes today so I'll be optimistically "summer ready" to wear all my sandals. After years of dreading the change to summer clothes, I've lost over 5 stone and want to wear them.

LaurieFairyCake · Yesterday 07:49

It’s currently 12 degrees in London but in 2 days it’s going to be 27. Which is fucking mental and nothing shows global warming/climate death more than these extremes of temperature!

I’m totally dreading the heat, I hate temperatures that high, literally makes me feel sick.

BunnyWabbit2000 · Yesterday 08:13

I don't like really hot weather. I hate sun cream. My hair goes frizzy and horrible. I feel really unattractive.

I love winter for boots and nicely cut jeans etc.

However having said that I'd love to be able to just leave the house in a long sleeved top or light jacket atm!!!

@PetrolKoala

come off it, it doesn’t get THAT hot in the UK

p.s you can get great spf sprays now that aren’t sticky and clammy as well as sprays you can use on your face over makeup

There is a happy medium. It is always either very cold or boiling hot on these threads. Warm and dry weather is good. Warm enough to wear short sleeves will do for me.

I think it depends where you live and your living/work circumstances @Cherrytree86
London at 35 degrees in a south facing flat without aircon is pretty stifling. Add to that a commute on the tube to a hot office.

I'm on the edge of the Pennines and there is always a breeze. I also drive to an air conditioned office in a car with air con, so I don't have problems with hot weather that many others do.

scalt · Yesterday 10:07

The weather we had in the south east a couple of weeks ago was lovely: pleasantly warm, and not stiflingly hot. I haven't used sun cream yet this year.

But I expect that from Thursday, I'll be busily hiding the threads moaning about the heat, to save the sun fairies which die every time somebody moans about the very small amount of hot sunny weather we get each year.

henlake7 · Yesterday 16:37

TBF May isnt prime summer weather though, you can get heatwaves and hailstorms even snow!
It just feels miserable because last summer was pretty crap so winter seems endless.

Don't you mean 2024 or was it just awful where you are?

We had a glorious summer last year, although we could have done with some rain. We had a hosepipe ban in Yorkshire for months.

I have been out for a walk between showers this afternoon and it feels significantly warmer today.
