Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 13/05/2026 22:17

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

Zephyrine was an option for middle name….

I agree. Why would anyone give their kid a random noun as a name? Moss is not a name. It just isn't. Might as well call them Stone or Lichen or Bracken.🤣 Or go the whole hog and just call them Door or Table. Or Fork. "Here's little Baby Fork. Isn't he sweet?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Edited

Bracken would be a lovely name!

I love it too! Sephy for short.

I think a lot of people would mishear it as Stephanie. And Sephy as Steffi.

I still secretly love Rupert, not sure if DS could style it out tho

Rupert will always and forever be a white bear wearing red and yellow clothes. Sorry.

If DS had been a girl he would have been Avril. Was a character in a book I read.

Oh I loved Avril! When I was having DS1 I wanted Avril for a girl, and my mother was very scathing about how "old fashioned" it was. I got it from a TV series we watched in Primary called "How we used to live 1939-1953" which I am sure others will have seen too. The young girl called Avril would have been born in about 1930, so to my mother (born 1950) it was old fashioned, but wouldnt have been in the 90's when DS was born. Wish I had used it for one of my girls now I think of it.

I also LOVE Sapphire but it gets a unanimous thumbs down whenever I mention it. I still think it's beautiful though.

Oh yes, I love all the gem names. Sapphire, Ruby, Opal. Also Crystal.

Contrary to popular belief, Crystal isn't an Americanism but a modern spelling of a very old German name, Christl, meaning Christ-like. I think it's pronounced Chrissle. So Crystal comes from those roots and is not some Disney name.

Bubobubo · 14/05/2026 00:27

A PP has already mentioned Horatio, another of mine was Isambard.
DS didn't get either of those names.

Bracken would be a lovely name!

No. No, it would not. Bracken is scrubland, and brackish water means water that is not flowing and therefore has lots of sludge and germs in it.

Why do some people like random words as names, when they are not names?? And if you do like random nouns as names, why aren't ALL nouns on the table? Why Bracken and not Fork???

Gaia.

I taught a Gaia. She and her brother were the most straight laced children you could imagine, determined to do nothing out of the ordinary. Mum, on the other hand, was a leftover from a 60's hippie commune. She fulfilled every cliche that you can imagine that went with that image.

Bexxie9015 · 14/05/2026 00:32

Keresia with my first
Clementine my second
Sonny for my third. Got outvoted. I still love them now

DH kept jokingly (well, mostly jokingly) suggesting Horatio for a boy which I laughed off, but there did come a point where I was like wait … maybe?

I still love Hero for a girl, I really do, but not sure I’d ever be brave enough to actually use it.

We had a brief moment of considering Aelswith for a while too.

Given the above DD ended up with a very normal name really.

I know someone called Horatio and he was so embarrassed he called himself Dave at school, even though it was a v posh school.

tryandbepositive · 14/05/2026 00:33

Fire for a boy. Can you imagine calling his name and the panic

Rachie1973 · 14/05/2026 00:33

My kids have got ordinary names, no thanks to my ExDH though.

He was set on Shaniqua for a girl and Trevor for a boy! In the 90s.

He was still trying to persuade our kids to use it for their kids too!

ValleyoftheShadow · 14/05/2026 00:33

I'd love something soothing and naturey. Like Willow, Forest, River, Fern, that sort of thing. I also like Astrid. That's probably the only one of the lot I'd actually consider using though. My kids actually have very standard names. If I could do it again, I'd go a bit more unique and interesting, but not too much.

My friend has a 6 month old Clementine. Clemmie normally. Shes adorable. I did a double take at first but I’m used to it now and she suits it.

I’m due in a couple of months and we’re down to two names…. One of which is Moss @aperolspritzbasicbitch 😬😆

Please don’t name your poor child Moss ☹️

The name we did end up using had most of these letters in a different order

YABU to name your poor banana child “Pilts” or “Dreab.” 😔

Redheadedstepchild · 14/05/2026 00:36

Lindsey. For a boy. In a Scottish clan sense. Or Lindsay. We know a big grown up Scottish Lindsey. He's lovely.

NearlyBald · 14/05/2026 00:37

BellatrixpureBlood · 13/05/2026 22:18

Banana. I thought it went well with our surname 😂

Hammock?

Trallers · 14/05/2026 00:40

Alethea. In the end I decided it sounded too much like Alicia said with a lisp and chose something else.

Handrearedmagpie · 14/05/2026 00:41

Rex

I wanted to call DD Evan or James as a girl's name 😫

MrsAvocet · 14/05/2026 00:44

I was the one doing the vetoing, but DH was set on calling our DD either Anastasia or Arabella. Actually now I don't think Anastasia is as awful as I did then, but it would still sound absolutely ridiculous with our surname. Arabella sounds like a spoilt schoolgirl from an Enid Blyton book to me so that was always a non starter.

TokyoTantrum · 14/05/2026 00:49

Arcadia for a girl, Flint for a boy
