Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

Genevieve

actually I still like it!

I have a Genevieve on my team. My father wanted to call me Genevieve. Its a lovely name.

For me, the out there one was Ignatius.

roy is my daughters middle name 🤣

A kind word of advice, never give away any personal information on the internet.

For instance, it could be that Roy might be your mother's maiden name, and your mother's maiden name also happens to be one of your bank security passwords...

One thread on its own is harmless, but once you've posted dozens of times on multiple different topics over several years, where you live, what was at no 1 on your 18th birthday, your childhood pet's name, all that data adds up.

If our youngest had been a girl she would have been saddled with the name Caledonia Jade. I planned to shorten it to Callie, but still, WTF was I thinking? Pregnancy truly must affect sensible thoughts…

I love the idea of twins/sisters named Rhythm and Rejoice but wasn’t going to happen.
I also loved Job but it was hated on here, and DH wasn’t keen so never got to use.

Job is problematic for a couple of reasons but those girls names are kind of awesome.

Mine above weren't so weird but for a while my husband was throwing around Achilles, Thor and Magnus (we are not Greek, or Scandi, or mythical).

Nofeckingway · 13/05/2026 23:50

Dylan or Daniel . Turned out to be hugely popular those years . Also Morrissey ( I know ) .Tiernan .
Georgia for a girl , Georgie for short .Still sorry I didn't.

If its good enough for Emma Thompsons DD.....

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/05/2026 00:03

Posted about this many times over the years but.......

about 30 years ago when announcing births in the local paper was still a thing, a local couple had twin boys.....Leroy and Elroy.

Why would anyone do that to their sons?

My "out there" names according to my first H were Eden and Eloise. But this was a man who (in 1997) said "What's wrong with Susan or Claire?"

Caress. 🤣 In fairness, I was fifteen, and there had been a TV character called Caress, I think. (I wasn't pregnant at fifteen, I was just imagining my future family. Also young enough not to have any idea how pervy the world was and what it would have made of a girl called Caress!)

P.S. - Yes, there was a character in The Colbys, a Dynasty spin-off, called Caress Morell, played by Kate O'Mara.

When I was pregnant with my first I saw a very old Disney movie with a rooster in it called Chanticleer and that was the name i was going with, boy or girl.

I was adamant I was using it right up to the day of my induction and the midwife asked had I any names and a wave of embarrassment came over me trying to explain the name. I thought thats never happening again and I named him a regular name.

Rosiecloud · 14/05/2026 00:05

I went through a phase of being convinced we should call her Boudicca. She’s very grateful we didn’t 😂😂

Bernard. Seriously.

My father was named Bernard in the 50's and I am thanking you on his behalf for not saddling your son with that name. He fucking LOATHES his name, especially as since US TV/influencers etc have become so popular, a lot of younger people call him berNARD. There is a reason that for most of his professional life he was known by his middle name!

Wilhelmina or Eugenie. DH vetoed both very quickly

Eugenie is just a truly, truly horrible name, so ugly, but I guess she could at least have shortened it to Jean. Or Jenna.

Wilhelmina isn't great but not as bad as Eugenie, and actually not very easy to shorten to something normal.

VoltaireMittyDream · 14/05/2026 00:16

We couldn’t come up with a name before DS was born.

Then once he was born he didn’t sleep literally AT ALL for weeks, and had to go to the registry office at the last possible day and pick a name and we were hallucinating with tiredness and delirious with mastitis and I had cabbage leaves in my bra and he SO nearly ended up being Ichabod

Fortunately my mother shook some sense into me.

I agree. Why would anyone give their kid a random noun as a name? Moss is not a name. It just isn't. Might as well call them Stone or Lichen or Bracken.🤣 Or go the whole hog and just call them Door or Table. Or Fork. "Here's little Baby Fork. Isn't he sweet?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I liked Wilhemina for the Dracula reference, Mina for short.

Eugenie was the name of one of the daughters of Queen Victoria which is why Sarah Ferguson pushed for it for her DD. Same with Beatrice I believe.

I'm aware of the royal connection. Doesn't make it a non-ugly name! I remember reading at the time that Sarah F. wanted Annabelle but the Queen thought it too yuppy. Not that S.F. has good taste in names. Beatrice is almost as bad as Eugenie. Both stunningly ugly names.

If DS had been a girl he would have been Avril. Was a character in a book I read.
