Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

IT'S A SURNAME THOUGH! 🤣

Greer Garson, Oscar-winning actress, would disagree!

The actor Aneurin Barnard, age 39

I don't know him.

Betsylee · 14/05/2026 21:56

I wanted Demelza which was from the Poldark books and tv series from the 1970s and DH wanted Anneka as he liked Anneka Rice. I haven't yet met a Demelza so do regret it in a way.

I went to school with a Demelza (she would have been born in 80 or 81. If anyone mentioned her name was unusual she’d just shrug and say ‘My Mum loved Poldark!’

Velvet for my daughter! Picked a completely normal name in the end!

JuliettaCaeser · 14/05/2026 23:34

We sat next to a family on the beach with a dd named Velour. So not even velvet which is bad enough but the cheap rip off of velvet! The mind boggles!

I don't know him.

Fair enough he’s not mega famous but was in Dunkirk and The Goldfinch (films) and War and Peace and Doctor Who and has won an Olivier Award. I think Aneurin is a lovely name.

I meant I don't know him in the same way as I don't know you.

I think Chanticleer is French for rooster!

Chanticleer appears in The Canterbury Tales. I don't know about the Disney version, but in Chaucer's story he has a favourite hen wife called Pertelote. I considered Pertelote for DD but thought it sounded silly with my very ordinary surname....

I was answering a point about Aneurin being an old man’s name.

One Aneurin aged 39 does not make it not an old man's name.
Billie Piper has a son called Winston but most people wouldn't think of it as a name from the 2000s.

Both names are fine but both are strongly associated with politicians.

mumonthehill · 15/05/2026 10:42

i know a 20 year old Aneurin! I do like this name.

Paltrow also has a candle named This Smells Like My Vagina. I really wouldn't be influenced by her naming preferences!

I was joking ffs I’m not a fan of naming a child after a piece of fruit.🙄🙄🙄

JuliettaCaeser · 15/05/2026 15:55

Not necessarily a problem. For some the name came first and the fruit was named after a person who had the name.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 15/05/2026 16:23

Lily Tiger - I know !

Interesting!

Also, in principle why not name after fruit if we name after flowers? In fact, and I’m getting out of my depth now because I’m no botanist, they’re similar aren’t they? Or comparable anyway, botanically speaking. Maybe. Why Daisy and not Tomato? 😆

Sounds more masculine. How about the more unisex Medlar or Quince?

Gwyneth would be kicking herself she didn’t think of those! Actually I think there was a Quince in a Midsummer Nights Dream. Those two are no worse than some of the try hard names out there, and at least they’re something in nature that has existed for centuries!

NamingNoNames · 15/05/2026 19:05

Medlar might be tricky because it sounds like meddler and

Just looking back at my list I had Wyld/Wild, Indie, and Rogue for a girl. Bit of a theme 😂 I had no idea my actual daughter would end up being all of those things and did not need to be named them…

For a boy I had Byrd, Fox and Wolf - not ever serious contenders I don’t think - and also Lux meaning light. I quite like it on paper, maybe for a middle name, but the idea of announcing your child as a luxury upgrade is unfortunate. “James Luxe! New and Improved!” 🫣

Someone mentioned they used to know a Wild. Her surname was Rose. She married a Mr Bush

Ah, I've heard that one. Except it was Wild Rose who married Mr Bull.
