Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

Several people have mentioned the name Sapphire.

I was at school thirty years ago with sisters, one of whom had a 'traditional' name (actually the short form of an Old Testament name) and one a less traditional one. Thirty years ago fewer non-traditional names were used and the sisters' names didn't seem to go together.

It turned out that the one known by a biblical name was really Sapphire, but she didn't like having such a distinctive/unusual name.
'Sapphire' and her sister's name were well matched. Had there been a Mumsnet then Mumsnetters would have agreed that they were.

Gwyneth would be kicking herself she didn’t think of those! Actually I think there was a Quince in a Midsummer Nights Dream. Those two are no worse than some of the try hard names out there, and at least they’re something in nature that has existed for centuries!

I knew a Quincey in my youth.

A friend's DW is a Sapphire

Zeppelin because I love Led Zep. Also Sunflower and Rebel (not after Wilson). DD got off very lightly, luckily for her…

I think that’s a gorgeous name - although I’d go Quincy

Aldous. We're South American and father is part Japanese 😂 For DS2, Linus. I still think this one could have worked but we decided to go for sensible international names that work in several languages.

Know one teenager by this name.

Also know a Queenie

AInightingale · 16/05/2026 14:25

Aldous is lovely! You never know, it may have a moment, be used in a novel or film and become popular, or someone might make a version of Brave New World...

All the people on this thread pronouncing some God-awful names with ugly sounds to be "gorgeous" or "lovely" is making me 🤣🤣

NamingNoNames · 16/05/2026 20:42

I can't imagine any name being gorgeous. Truly Scrumptious might be.
Usually the ones described as gorgeous are overused or quite odd.
