Three women's bodies found in the sea at Brighton

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

Why didn't anyone report three women were missing?

If it's a Channel crossing, from what I understand, it's rare that women go on the boats from France, and when they do they are pushed to the back / bottom, where the risk of being crushed is high.

If it's not a crossing, what on earth has happened?

Words can't express how evil this is.

No idea. People trafficking? Agree it’s terribly sad.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/05/2026 10:17

I was just about to post this. How horrific. What on earth has happened? Tragic accident?

TommorrowsToday · 13/05/2026 10:19

There is no indication of what happened yet. Let's not make any presumptions.

Could be a migrant boat
Could be murder
Could be swimmers who got into trouble
Could be any number of other causes.

It's sad, and of course concerning. It's ghoulish to make presumptions at this point.

Potooooooooes · 13/05/2026 10:19

I can't work out what's happened either. Whatever has gone on, it is a deeply tragic and shocking event.

Puppylucky · 13/05/2026 10:21

It's more likely to be sea swimmers who got into difficulties than anything else but is a horrible tragedy whatever the cause.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/05/2026 10:44

Idk if these are migrants or swimmers. But how horrific that women get pushed to the back to be crushed. Omg!

Women and children. Also get pushed off the boats to accommodate men

You have evidence of this?

Wouldn't be surprised if this is true. It always seems to be young men in the news / photos. I suppose they see themselves more worthy of a better life here.
I don't believe for one moment they are all going to bring their spouses and kids over either.
Anyhow back to the thread, three lives lost in the sea, hope there is nothing sinister behind it. Whoever it is and however they ended up there it's so tragic for their families.

Aliceinmunsnetland · 13/05/2026 11:41

Just read it's off Maderia Drive so could be swimmers or late nighters that have been swept away from the beach or pier. Gets dangerously windy along that area and can easily knock you off your feet.

FernandoSor · 13/05/2026 11:51

I can't see how it could possibly be migrants - it is 80 odd miles to the Strait of Dover and the prevailing inshore current is West to East in any case.

catmothertes1 · 13/05/2026 11:53

Is it more likely that they were swimmers who got in difficulty?

I was thinking the same. Migrants are normally further down the coast towards Folkestone Dover.

You have evidence of this?

Just watch all the videos from the French side of the Channel as several journalists have covered this, although more from the French police are doing bugger all side of things despite us paying France billions. I've seen several from the mainstream news sites.

Edit
I'm thinking it's more likely to be swimmers unfortunately. Discovered at 5.45am.

Thanks. I just asked AI and you're right - of the 50,000 people that came in on boats last year, it says less than 0.1% came in via Brighton

It's May, the sea is still very old. Noone would go swimming without a wetsuit.

Itsanewdawnitsanewdayitsanewlife4me · 13/05/2026 12:08

@TheKittenswithMittens eh... loads of people swim all year round without wetsuits.

There’s nothing been reported to suggest they weren’t wearing wet suits.

This was my first thought, people often swim in the sea at all times of year, my initial thoughts were that they went swimming and have got into trouble.

Changingplace · 13/05/2026 12:14

What makes you think they weren’t reported as missing? The reports say emergency services were alerted at 5.45am and that’s when the search started.

There are all sorts of reasons why men are more common in certain types of migration. It is probably much safer for a young man to travel abroad than a young woman for example. Also men often go and send money home to support their family. I know my father in law worked in England and sent money home as did many many Irish men.

Agreed, there's no evidence they weren't reported missing.

It says a police news conference is due at 12:30 so we'll know more then.

There’s several sea swimming groups that meet each morning near that part of the beach.

gemini0606 · 13/05/2026 12:20

@TheKittenswithMittensI live on West Coast of Scotland (can see beach from my house) there are two groups of wild swimmers who go out every week on a Saturday and a Sunday, none of them wear wetsuits (quite often bobbly hats) but swimsuits all round for them

Gettingbysomehow · 13/05/2026 12:21

I used to live near there at beachy head and people were always getting washed up.
Jumpers, people caught by the tide, swimmers. The sea is dangerous.
