Three women's bodies found in the sea at Brighton

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

Why didn't anyone report three women were missing?

If it's a Channel crossing, from what I understand, it's rare that women go on the boats from France, and when they do they are pushed to the back / bottom, where the risk of being crushed is high.

If it's not a crossing, what on earth has happened?

Words can't express how evil this is.

I think it’s probably sea swimmers. It’s very sad.

InstantlyBella · 13/05/2026 13:36

It's not true. I have worked with migrants and they will always prioritise women and children on the boats wherever possible.

Anyone would think they were human beings, wouldn’t they?

rainbowstardrops · 13/05/2026 14:10

Oh and the amount of people who go way too close to the edge at Beachy Head is mind blowing. Also people sitting on the beach up against the cliffs when the area is notorious for substantial cliff falls.

Well yes, as someone that has worked around both migrants and British people I can say with 100% certainty that they are better people than us in every conceivable metric.

Yesyouneedtogotohospital · 13/05/2026 14:14

I went to university in Brighton. Madeira Drive has a lot of beachfront clubs, including Kings Road Arches, where the clubs open directly on the beach at sea level. I remember regularly seeing drunk people walking/running into the sea after the clubs closed. One particularly wild and windy January night a group of five men ran into the raging waves in front of me. How they got out I’ll never know.

That’s not to say that’s what’s happened here, but there’s a music festival on in Brighton at the moment, so it’s not impossible.

Whatever the cause it’s tragic and I feel for the families.

Delatron · 13/05/2026 14:14

An awful tragedy. I immediately thought early morning swimmers. And maybe one got in to trouble and the other two went to help - utterly heartbreaking. The fact they were found so quickly and the alarm
was sounded promptly reaffirmed this.

The weather has turned and the sea is so choppy. My thoughts are with their families.

Do some flipping reading, other than naff social media, the Daily Mail and GBN. Educate yourself on the rules, esp the updated ones about the measures Labour brought in. Then be embarrassed for spreading lies.

They definitely cannot be from small boats; Kier has smashed the gangs. He told me that repeatedly ad nauseum. (Or do my eyes deceive me when I watch the news and it was another Labour lie?)

Don’t want to be all thread policey but perhaps not the best topic to take a jibe at Starmer? Politics divides us but grief should unite us.

Well you have also taught me some new English. Would rudiculous be a hybrid of rude and ridiculous?

Fair enough - you got me there 😅

RobinEllacotStrike · 13/05/2026 14:22

my first thought was sunrise sea swimmers. I've swum on the south coast for a few winters (not Brighton) and its quite rare to see winter swimmers in wetsuits.

How dreadfully tragic for these women & their families. 💐

There used to be signs over Beachy Head, warning people about going too close to the edges and that they're made of chalk back in my day living in B'ton. I presume there will be some signs still, must we mollycuddle everyone because they can't be bothered to take heed?

Comes a time we must be responsible for our actions.

I don’t recall seeing those signs tbh.

PhuckTrump · 13/05/2026 14:27

Would be helpful to know what they were wearing. Wetsuits? Swimming costumes? Street clothes? Nothing?

I didn’t see this in the BBC article after the police press conference.

Do you people never take a day off? Shoehorning stuff about migrants or Starmer into every post is getting ridiculous.

It's rife on instagram and youtube now - I'll be watching a perfectly innocuous video about birdwatching or architecture or something and the comments section gets spammed by loons going on about migrants.

southcoastsammy · 13/05/2026 14:29

We don’t get small boats in Brighton, too far. We do have hundreds of people, women esp. getting into the sea all year round daily.
This morning was bright and sunny and breezy and a high tide. To someone not from here, it could well have looked like good conditions to swim - or to confident swimmers it might have still been attractive.
It can be deceptive - looks safe but because of the way the beach shelves it can be tricky to get out when it’s windy/ choppy as it was this morning. I was walking on the beach at 6.30am and it’s was lovely but no way I would have gone in. The current was obvious to me.

Most people here seem to think the same thing - overconfident sea swimmers who got in trouble, or visitors who didn’t realise how tricky it can be. The month long festival is in so the city is teeming with people and visitors, loads of late night events on, clubs open til the early hours.A dawn dip is v. Common.

We won’t know till later but
RIP whoever they are or however they ended up in this situation.

How would it be helpful exactly? To who?

The police are looking at CCTV to determine exactly what happened, and will be contacting next of kin. That's all the public need to know.

lifeturnsonadime · 13/05/2026 14:30

Awful tragedy.

I do wish people would keep politics off this kind of thread.

why??

southcoastsammy · 13/05/2026 14:34

The seafront is miles and miles long, and the current drags to the marina right now. They could have got in the water 3/4 miles from where they were found, if so it would have taken a while for the police to find belongings left in the beach. They were searching for hours after the bodies were reported recovered.

wifty · 13/05/2026 14:34

it's predominantly people leaving clubs in the wee hours and popping into the sea for a drunken swim

it's so dangerous on the seafront at night - like the woman who was violently attacked by those men.

so sad though

Allseeingallknowing · 13/05/2026 14:36

Cutchemist · 13/05/2026 14:33

why??

I wouldn’t expect the police to go into detail like that as this stage. They are trying to identify them.

southcoastsammy · 13/05/2026 14:37

The kids always get exited when they see the helicopter go up - happens frequently in the summer especially- but the parents all know it’s almost a last resort and someone is in serious trouble.

Why? Why do you need to know this right now? So you can speculate? The actual facts of who they were and why they were in the water will no doubt come out in due course.
